This is one of many times where airline pilots earn their keep. This is the type of stuff that separates the men from the boys. No matter your experience and time in type, you have to have nerves of steel and laser focused concentration. You’re watching speed, glide slope/path, flap speeds, and wind trends all the way down to touchdown. Then, you’re also thinking about touchdown point, runway length, runway conditions, and the most effective way to bring the aircraft to a safe and complete stop. It can be like taming a bull at times. But a good pilot always knows that he/she always has an out, a go-around.

It's not their fault I think we must be glad that they are not risking people's lives. They're doing a great job!! And they are trained to turn around if its not possible to land!!
I was on board of a 787 for a landind in Paris during Ciara winds. Pilots are trained for these situations, but when we have severe gusts, planes can't land. There is a speed wind limit by the manufacturer. When this speed is recorded by the plane, pilot must execute a go around. Is not a training problem, is safety rules. When we have strong winds, the goal is not to land, but to land safely. the best way is sometimes to make a go around or change airport.
Not to mention they had a massive computer problem on-flight over the ocean a few years ago in an A380. They handled it perfectly and everyone landed safely. Mad respect to them.
Perhaps if they had suffered a birdstrike it was just a little safer to take a risky landing than to chance to fly on to Manchester, Munich or Frankfurt which is where the others were diverting to. If Manchester had closed, Germany is a long way to go if you have possible engine damage.

I’m betting a return to their layover hotel for the crew and an even longer day of travel for the passengers.
