- Ice sculptor Shintaro Okamoto explains the art of sculpting ice in 10 levels of difficulty. The angelfish is one of the most historical designs in the ice sculpting community, so it's the perfect place to start. Shintaro explains how you can create an angelfish design in increasing levels of complexity, from using simple hand tools to CNC machining the piece.

If you don't start with ice cube as level 1 , what's even the point ?
this is def not one of those videos, especially a wired one.
Dont do that, dont give me hope
Ok I want to be part of this
I never expected that they'd use a CNC machine for something like adding in a skeleton. That was super surprising!
I didn't think two ice blocks could stick together so well to be able to take powertools without falling apart
it is so refreshing to see normal comments that are a reaction to the video. Super rare. Warms my heart

8:18 Hey, i've seen something like that in my sister's room once. Huh, didn't know she was into ice sculpting.
That shit's for grinding something else.
Lol
Why did I think they would actually sculpt this in like a freezer
He's wearing a coat so I assume it's in a fairly cold room
That 3rd sculpture is mind blowing
This man too ice making to a whole another realm... this video was too impressive, and the way he explained every step was very detailed and straightforward, and there was no cursing or stuttering. This was a great video!
I don't see how this is 10 levels. More like 3 techniques, all at master level.
Yeah it was more like 10 steps
ikr every level was hard
Well the first few steps he said he used when he was 15. So if he can do it at 15 you can probably do it too

Level 10: Hold ice cube tray in one hand while finding room for it in the freezer with the other, all without spilling
Succeeding only to spill it once it's already in so now there's gonna be ice everywhere
The worst part is you opened freezer door without relizing it's closing. Gave a suprised hitch and water spilt on the floor.
Even worse. You slipped and fell.
Curse you freezer door
If say for w/e reason: mistake or ice structure is bad around certain parts and take the example in the video, if the fish's tail breaks off. Is there a way to attach it with some water and re-freeze it to fix the unintended breakage.
6:23 he mentioned here how to fuse two ice

i really like the shape of the second one,, and the way the light plays on the scales is pretty
Man, that’s a cool profession. But just imagine that your an artist where none of your art pieces survive just a few days after they’re made.
Anthony Maida it is key to art, impermanence. Beautiful in its on way
CKV I like that outlook
That guy making tacos feels the same way - because people keep eating them! Can't we just admire them without eating them for once?
Well there is this form of art called sand mandalas or something like that where it is putting grains of sand to create beautiful pattern but later destroy it at the end and than putting in a river sooo.

I love this channel. All of the interviews are so thoughtful and well done.
5:41 I was really hoping he was gonna say “think outside the blocks”
Love how most of the "10 levels" were him just introducing every hand tool.
Science and art truly go hand in hand, this is a totally new branch of learning that I went into studying engineering for. Can't wait to see where it goes.
Carving the scales was so satisfying.

It's just a DIY ice sculpture.

Great video. Most indepth discussion on carving ice ive seen. Very informative. Not many out there like this.
I continuously had the chills throughout the video
I can’t even draw a fish as good as his first sculpture lol
That's why you need to see to believe. Understand what it actually looks like before pretending to know.

That skeletal structure was genuinely amazing
Wow. Fascinating. Great idea to show the visuals of the three different pieces at the end. The artist is so articulate. Thank you for the educational video! 🙏
That is absolutely insane. Never would have expected machines
The only ice sculpture I’ve seen is when my ice machine decides to spit out a ball made up of 18 and a half ice cubes
I already knew most of the basics of this (I didn't know people used cnc to make ice sculptures but it totally makes sense) but this man explained everything so well it was a pleasure to watch anyway
Sculpting is one of the most satisfying thing to watch .
Level 11 is refilling the ice tray and bringing it to the fridge without dropping some water
It must be hard for him to receive a coke with ice and having to resist the urge to carve them all
He'd suck it up in his mouth and spit out a snowflake. Whereas If I tried I'd spit out water.
These videos are always extremely interesting! Love seeing explanations of these arts and disciplines. Great video👍
