I don't talk about it much but I live with an incurable illness that's forced me to rely on my TH-cam channel as my only source of income. That said please consider using my links in the description - it not only helps the channel but helps keep my life afloat. BIG THANK YOU to those that do. Lots of detailed information.
Like usual, I enjoy your reviews as there's little to no bias.
Keep them coming, we're paying attention 🎉
More on the way 💪
THANK YOU. Too many reviews look like ads, I've been waiting for someone to talk about latency. Agree a preamp would've been nice on the front.
No prob! I do what I can.
Was looking for a review 👍
Glad to help
Great video.... I was considering buying the HD8 but then decided to go for the older 8 channel 1824c and a Mackie mixer for around $1K.
Thanks Promo! Hope that 1824c serves you well
Great review brother I wish have added talk back. they have it on the older studio 192 and quantum models..
Good point, wonder why they dropped it 🤔
The ES 2 seems promising at that price, nice vid!
Thanks! It's definitely a nice entry in the already crowded budget range.
Was considering the ES for my portable studio setup.
Being able to to record vocals with plugins active and no latency is essential. As well as low noise…
Still debating….
Thanks for the review!
I need to get myself one of these!
It's a solid pick! Just got done putting the HD 8 in my rack :)
i have the ES4, i upgraded from the Audient ID14 which i thought was a fantastic sounding interface but the ES 4 is on another level, the sound quality at 96khz is out of this world crystal clear monitoring, highly recommended
Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
Great review video! After all looks like Presonus is going through a Renaissance period in their company history. Although I wasn't previously impressed with PS, I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the build quality and design of their new interfaces.
Agreed. I'll admit I always thought of Presonus as a more prosumer brand and maybe it still is to some but this HD 8 unit paired with my A7Vs sounds great and has found a home in my rack.
Thanks Jacob. Please make a video for comparison between Presonus ES2 vs Audient ID24.
Great video … appreciate it very much!!
Thanks! Be sure to check my latest featuring the HD 8!
Hey Brother, have you tried connecting the ES2 to an MPC One and use it as a Standalone Audio Interface? Will it lose the pre-amp/ auto-gain capabilities with clipping reduction? Will it even work with a Standalone machine (MPC One LIve, MPC Key 37, etc...)? Awesome video! New Subscriber here!
Super dope video!
Appreciate you!
Thanks for the detailed video! For the ES 2, do you know if the Mute button can mute the input instead of the main output? Does the device remember it's last state after you power off and on or does it always power with everything unmuted?
Hey, great video!
Can you compare the 2 interfaces against other interfaces like the Audient ID14 mk2?
How do the speaker and headphone outputs sound, are they better than the Audient?
Also, would you say it is worth to spend the extra for the HD2 than the ES2 just for the headphone and speakers sound quality?
Lastly, can the ES2 drive 250 ohms headphones? is it getting as loud as the Audient? if not, does the HD get louder and can drive these headphones?
I'm not sure on the 250 ohm headphones but I also own an iD24 and find myself having to crank my gain pretty high with it to get my monitors and headphones (ATHM50X) pumping while the HD 8 gets aggressively loud at 11-12 o clock. Go HD, you won't regret it. Bonus points should you use my link.
@@JacobDarkOfficial And what about the ES2? is it comparable to the id24/14? I'm talking about DAC audio quality and speakers output quality, how do they sound?
Also I'm interested to know is the ES2 main knob aluminum or plastic?
HI, new sub here! Enjoying the channel so far! Quick question -- @3:10 the utility showing the interface latency and other measurements is exactly the kind of tool I've been looking for... Is it part of the Quantum interface software, or available from another website? If the latter, would you provide a link? Thanks again, and keep up the stellar content!
Thanks for the sub! It's a free download just Google RTL Utility
@@JacobDarkOfficial Thanks!
Hi I would like to ask if this has direct input monitoring?
Also if or would work with Mac mini later 2014 i7 I am planing to buy ES 2.. cheers
Tried PreSonus years ago. It was okay, but preamps where mehh. It worked and got some work done but was nothing special. Out of curiosity seeing the specs I thought I'd give them another shot seeing Fender merged with them. I bought an es4 to test out. Not even two weeks in and started having issues with the preamp on channel 1. I sent it back today. I know all companies can have things happen, but I'm not willing to roll the dice and go forward with a replacement. There were also a few other things I didn't like about the unit once I got it. hope it works out for you.
Best review for me...
Appreciate you!!
for Quantum ES2 I'm wondering if we use the front guitar line input, one of the input on the back will be automatically disabled?
Yay!!! I only trust your opinion
I'd say watch a few reviews and take a little bit from everybody but thanks lol
I would love to try the HD8. Im currently using the Studio 192 and its fantastic. I love being able to control my interface from inside of Studio One. It would be nice to upgrade it since ive had it for so long.
I really hope Presonus will make an 8 channel mic pre to pair with the HD8 similar to how they paired the Studio 192 and DP88. Not many companies make them anymore. Focusrite, Audient, and Behringer are the only ones i can think of. It would be nice to have more options for expanding the I/O
Good recommendation on the pre! Yea Universal Control is fantastic.
The HD8 has a 'standalone' mode that turns it into an 8 channel preamp with ADAT outputs. So you can use up to three HD8's together for 24 inputs and outputs - the first one connected to your computer via usb, and the other two connected via ADAT to the first one in 'stand alone' mode
I have 3 presonus interfaces. the preamps crapped out in months. They are on the shelf and useless.. the bad part is Presonus in Baton Rouge and Sweetwater refuse to fix them. Buyer beware. I have switched to Black Lion interfaces and the sound is great..
Well I'm sticking with the HD 8 so I'll be sure to follow up if I experience the same!
What do you think is better the auduint id 14mk2 or this new presonus Es please i am going to buy one
Both will do what you need them to, buy based off your connectivity needs, iD14mk2 has ADAT, 2 headphone outs and an extra pair of line outs, ES 2 has MIDI
@@JacobDarkOfficial iam a Naylon strings guitarist and i often need to record electric guitar ,and iam asking in terms of sound quality iam confused a little bit ,thanks for your time and for your help
@@medoalraee6836 I would personally go for the ES in that case simply because the instrument/guitar input is codesigned by Fender. At this price point you're not going to notice an audible difference in recording quality imo.
I have the original flagship Quantum. I love it. It's only 6ish years old and still holds up. I don't think the Quantum is worthy of the upgrade just yet. Will wait for the next gen.
Yea unless there's some kind of groundbreaking new technology you're probably good for a while!
Why have they gone backwards, Thunderbolt to grotty old USB?
A good question, maybe Presonus will see this and answer.
“Grotty” Lol 😂😂 but fr.. not having Thunderbolt was a deal breaker
@Jacob Dark
Did you purchase this gear?
I was lucky enough to have Presonus send them. Don't worry I keep my reviews honest and the preamp noise and latency tests have no bias.
What's in between the two of these? Is it of the same level of quality? she
ES4 and HD4, same quality, different amount of inputs/outputs
Do you need an external preamp if you have this???
No you do not, these have Presonus new MAX HD preamps built in.
Can somebody give me a solid answer on whether there is or is not a way to monitor this unit with zero latency. I have the Quantum 2626 and can only monitor the first two channels with zero latency via the channel 1 & 2 channel insert connections through an external effect that I monitor on an external monitor console. I really wish the 2626 had inserts to do this on every channel but unfortunately that’s what it has. I initially bought it based on numerous reviews touting “imperceptible near-zero latency” but I soon found out that when I tried fiddling with the record buffer I was either disappointed by perceptible latency or pops and clicks. This unit doesn’t even have the two insert points on the first two channels so I am going to have to presume it is more of the same unless by some magic Presonus found a way to give us ZERO latency via the UC Control functionality. What has been the reports on this by user experience thus far?
Maybe Presonus will see this and chime in but feel free to send me an email (in description) and I'll do my best to answer your questions.
The only question I would have is how it stacks up against RME (Babyface)...
Never used an RME interface but would be a nice comparison!
I think they went back to usb c due to the new weird thunderbolt crap intel has been doing now. Apperently it is not going to work backward compatible? I think maybe they knew this and went back to usb. I used usb for years and never had issues with latency. Even tracking with plug ins. A good cpu is the key and keep your sample and buffer not crazy high.
What other reason would a solo music producer/artist who records mainly by himself get the HD8 instead of the other models??
Just curious... 🤔
Maybe you have other rack gear like a preamp and compressor so you already have a rack desk or furniture and want a rackmount interface to match. Maybe you have multiple sets of monitors or a lot of outboard gear and want more connectivity. I'm sure there are other reasons, those are the first that come to mind.
Oh okay thanks fam I appreciate you 👊🏽❤️
Keep up the good work on these videos!
My ES 2 is performing extremely poorly compared to my expectations. No better, maybe not as well as my cheap Audiobox Go. I had the original quantum 2626 and it performed quite well. I am depressed now.
Sorry to hear this! If it's not living up to your expectations maybe try the HD series?
Monitor outputs have no left and right labeling😂 and the USB power is not even enough to keep the unit running 😂. And no gain knobs on the unit 😂😂
Latency is terrible for this interface! There now exist very reasonable DSP-enhanced processors that Presonus can design their interfaces around. Just matching the rest of the slackers in the market with a brand new 2024 design is frankly pathetic. The problem itself is what dictates design and latency is an enormous problem. A session ending problem. At $1000, Presonus should be looking to bring the market up to date, not merely join it.
Looking at your excellent testing, at 96k, a 64 sample buffer is 0.7ms, which is a spot-on result any computer should be able to achieve. Roundtrip conversion these days is commonly 40 to 50 samples max, below .5ms at 96k. Yet the RTL reveals an extra 250 samples doing… what, exactly?? These numbers mean that a musician cannot perform live through the interface, no matter the power of the CPU. In 2024.
Yea I checked out the Gearspace thread and a few people got almost the exact same results. For my needs it works but I don't do a lot of multi tracking with a crazy amount of plugins these days as TH-cam takes up most of my time.
@@JacobDarkOfficial It’s a pet peeve of mine. I invested in an HDX card years ago out of need for my projects. Between live broadcasts and feeding musician cues, it was well worth the expense. But, what I see in your testing is unusable delay even at 32 and 64 buffers. That’s not going to tolerate any kind of real-world processes at all. I’m just tired of seeing interfaces come out, year after year, with no progress. So, if I sound a little prickly, please know I expect the manufacturers to feel that, not you. You’ve done a great job showing the facts.
No worries, I'm pretty sure Presonus will eventually see your feedback
That's not real Quantums. 2626 still the best 8ch. interface under $1000
Presonus went backwards with the USB nonsense
A single color display is a hallmark of cheap. Whether it’s MOTU or Presonus makes no difference. We see in color and smart use of color can impart so much information. I purchased a $1500 MOTU interface and returned it for that reason.
So you want an RGB unit where you can customize the units LED/screen color?
@@JacobDarkOfficial No, not at all. I want the manufacturer to do all that. No customizing is necessary.
Yeh I think the meters could have done with green and the gradient orange to red peaks. Along with some db guidance. Makes it easier at a glance. The units seem solid though latency still needs to be addressed (depending what you use it for) Nothing revolutionary IMO. The blue theme on everything has gotten old. I use studio one and just wish presonus would replace the blue meters with green to orange to red gradients like many other daws. The blue meters kinda makes it cumbersome to the eyes when looking at all the track levels at a glance and..... there's too much blue!!!! But I digress. And yes I think they've cheaped out.
I can live with the blue but if I had my choice I agree with the traditional green orange red meters and maybe white for the rest.
Is ur only critique really about the color of the lights 😂😂😂😂
Hi Jacob ! Man you're a pro in your line of work ! Why aren't you using Cubase Pro to show us the differences between the Presonus audio interfaces? My respects and I wish you plenty of health man !
Thanks for the compliment! I don't own Cubase unfortunately and use Studio One exclusively
