  • The Pomeranian is one of the most popular "toy" or miniature dogs in the world. Due to their sweet expression and plush appearance, many decide to adopt them to enjoy a loyal, caring and intelligent dog. However, very few know that their character can also stand out for being strong, active and curious. So, they also need plenty exercise and special care.

I went to a pet store to meet my wife who said there were cute puppies available, I said okay, "but I don't want one of those silly fluffy dogs with skinny legs that I've seen in movies!" Well, when I turned up sure enough, there were the poms. I lent over to have a look at them and one little guy met my gaze and wanted to be picked up, so being the softy I am I obliged. It was an instant bond, he was so alert and looking at everything, so happy and just beamed awesomeness! I had to have him. I named him Cassius, but called him Champ. I had a few dogs before Champ, but he ran rings around every one of them, just amazing. He would jog with me, ride in the car, go to the beach, ride with me on my kayak, get baths weekly and looooved getting blow dried and brushed. So bright and playful, yet sitting beside someone on the lounge watching TV was his favorite time.
He was born in 2000 and passed in 2018, I miss him so much I almost cry every time I think of him. I buried him under our 70 year old Norfolk pine tree on the family property and planted a lavender plant in a large pot above him. I'm not sure if I am ready for another dog yet, but when I am it will definitely be another pommy. Best dog ever

Rip champ and Rip ALLLLL your other doggies. That made my old ass cry. What Is the natural lifespan of these little guys. My Pom is kinda small, id say teacup. No idea how old is he. He's a rescue. He was biting and crazy as hell when anyone would try to pet him I am guessing he thinks they're doing harm or up to no good. Slowly but surely, we got him to a loveable little male Pom. He is white with brown trim I guess if that's an accurate description. Coco is as Cute as can be! So yea how long do they live? And please say a long time. He doesn't look old at all. His fur grows normally. He needs constant hair cuts and his fur is very silky and beautiful. And his tiny little short legs are ADORABLE!!!!!! I am going WAAAY off topic here. Thanks for your story. Coco is next to me he promises to hook up with Champ at the pearly gates when said date comes. I'm kind of a morbid fucker sometimes. I apologies. Have a good day. -pro-V

I have a beautiful female pom, she's mostly black with a white streak on her chest. She's now 18 years old but still wants to play every bit as much as she always has. I adopted her when she was 7 years old, from the animal shelter. One thing I've noticed is that she is very faithful to me, she won't just run off with anybody....well, unless they have food for her! She's just a little bundle of incredible sweetness. :)

kelly heubel lots of protein! My pommy is old and still very energetic, she’s very healthy and runs circles around me, she has more energy then I could ever hope to have😂 we feed her tons of meat scraps and when we temporarily run out of cat food, we give her a small can of salmon❤️ (we use cat food because it has higher protein then other crappy brands of dogfood. And there are no health risks to feeding a dog cat food. There are health risks the other way around however. Really dogfood shouldn’t even be legal. It does not contain enough protein to boost their health.)

Lisa Robinson yes😇 I have had her for 12 years now and the cat food brand she’s been eating for all these years is purina cat chow, Naturals it’s #1 ingredient is made with chicken and even some turkey. I know people say not to feed your dogs cat food and don’t feed cats dog food. But in reality, dogs can eat cat food, but cats can’t eat dog food. They make cat food with way more protein than dog food. We have always made sure that all the animals we own get as much protein and nutrients that we can possibly offer. Sometime we even buy liver for them, organs are packed with nutrients👍🏻 she 12 and still hopping around like a pup🙂

The loyalty of the Pomeranian to the owner was displayed when my father was sick and dying and our dog seemed to take his condition the hardiest. While we were hoping our father would pull through the dog was in distress realizing the end was near. Earlier today my wife showed me a video of a dog crying in happiness when the owner came home and it brought memories of my father and his dog which brought me to this site. Man's best friend for sure.

Once when I had pneumonia he brought me his chew bone and put it on the bed beside me as a gift.He then layed down and had such a soulful expression. I have a pom and she instinctively knows how to herd. I have a few hens and when they get into the back yard my pom helps to herd them back in. She works just like a good sheep dog- she watches me and goes for the hen I point at and runs it for the gate. The only problem is she is so small and some of the hens turn on her and then she has to run and hide by my leg. But otherwise she is a great little herding dog.

They all know her name and look forward to seeing her because she seems to know exactly how to make each person happy. She especially loves to ride on a seniors knee in a wheel chair when I take them out for walks. She loves not having to walk and just watch the world go by. Be sure to have insurance Truepanion is the best insurance to have. They have many health issues. Getting them fixed as soon as they are old enough is vital. I take incredible care of mine. But he is expensive requires insulin syringes special low fat vet food and constant teeth brushing. They are high maintenance when it come to health. But the insurance is vital!! And Truepanion is the only one that pays 90% less the deductible and 10-% out of pocket and only for surgical and emergency’s .Regular maintenance and meds are our if pocket. Also all insurance company you must pay up front but Truepanion once they receive the paper work get a check out no later than 10 biz days. They are the best dogs but they must be trained gently but trained all the same they are not an
to be treated like a purse. They can be quite if trained and they are smart!! Don’t let those cute eye fool you they are very trainable. But have the insurance and money to get all their shots and for them to be fixed. Also don’t feed these dogs table food it’s awful for them over all health. Veggies like cucumbers and well steamed carrots and zucchini that are a mush like consistency is just fine. In their older years this is crucial to keep them on a low calorie diet hills low fat soft can food is the best. As it’s not loaded with sugar and fat and it will keep them from breaking their teeth which are very fragile. Best to let them naw on a carrot than a dog bone as a toddler but you have to Aldo be careful never to leave them alone to chew on a snack as they can choke easily. Also, do your homework and make sure your getting your pup from an akc breeder with certified paperwork. Lots of puppy mills out there. If you want a recommendation I can give you one.

I just love my Pom. I named him Bear, I purchased him from an add in the newspaper for $300. Before I got him I spent 6 months looking to rescue a small dog and everyday I would go to shelters, dog rescue places, pounds, all my friends were looking for a suitable dog for me. No luck. I needed a small dog, any bread. Although I wanted something young, pup to 3-4 yrs old. I gave up. I figured it wasn't meant to be. Then and add in newspaper my husband found was this male Pom 6 weeks old. I went and bought him. He was so infested with fleas he had scabs and worms crawling out his bottom. I took him to the family vet first thing the next morning. He has had 4 rounds of medicine to get him in good health. And I do believe I really did get to rescue a dog in need of a good home. That comforts me. He is awesome. I just love my Bear Bear! Thank you for the video.

She passed away 2 years ago and if your thinking of getting a Pom, get one! They are simply the best!! They’re loveable, cuddley, fluffy, VERY ACTIVE and VERY PROTECTIVE dogs! Haha They think they’re a lot bigger than what they really are! 😂
RIP Missy, mama misses you so much!! 😇

I have a black pom and he is simply adorable. They do have dental problems though and if I could do anything different about taking care for him it is that I would have trained him to get his teeth brushed when he was still a puppy. He is as smart as they come and he was the champion at his training courses. Brave, attentive, intelligent, very fixed on humans (treats and attention).
When he was a baby, he was just a ball of black fluffy fur, with his black shiny eyes. You couldn't see his legs or feet and I truly couldn't find his tail. It was firmly curled up on his back, hidden in his body fur, since he was always happy and content. I am really smitten with him still, even more so after 12 years.

My Pomeranian was my first small dog. I always had large dogs before. She is a constant joy even if she is too smart at times. My dog turns 14 years in October. I think that you let people know about one health problem that can occur. . . Collapsed trachea which causes a cough. They should also not let their dogs jump down from furniture, stairs, etc. as it can cause knee problems. I was made aware of this from the breeder I got her from.

my grandma bred poms, and the two that she used were longtime family pets, even after she stopped breeding. the male was the reason why i laughed for the first time as a baby. kids do need to be mindful to be gentle, as with all animals. i was always around dogs, so i knew that being gentle in my petting was important. the mom trusted me with her babies when i was young. theyve both now passed, but i have the runt of the last litter bred. hes a very affectionate and vocal dog. as my nannie say “theyre greeters” you cant be mad for how loud they can be. i just love poms so much

My first Pom was 24lbs.He was not over weight. The original Pom's decades ago were around 30/40lbs and were working dogs, but Pom's have been sized down with breeding over the years.Sometimes a Pom will be a throwback from it's ancestors as mine was.His parents were 7 & 8lbs, but he just kept growing. lol All other Pom's we've had (total of 7 in 18yrs) have been between 7 and 11lbs. Just my personal preference..I hate seeing a Pom without their mane. I kept my first Pom in the lions cut due to severe skin allergies.I never shaved his mane, legs or the tip of his tail off.

They are so close to Human, my friends friek out when they behave in humanlike ways. They go to sleep on demand, potty on demand, and Petey can carry a paper plate in his mouth and not spill the food. He actually stole someone's hamburger once, he took the plate and all! Excellent point addressing their eyes, and how they need wiping because of the discharge they're prone to.
I don't reward my dog when he barks, but I reward him for stopping.I would say they bark more than a little, so be aware.
My dog barks himself into choking fits!
They have throat issues such as collapsed trachea and do better walking in a harness, and should not wear circular throat collars.
They can have delicate legs and shouldn't be allowed to jump down from heights, especially onto hard ground.

    • @feraflauna3238

+Luis astudillo-Right. It's important for anyone who decides to adopt a pom that they have a tremendous amount of energy and they are highly social as well, so it's important to take them out for a walk often so they can remain stimulated. If you don't have the time or the patience to care for a pom, you shouldn't own one (my sister had her pom that she gave up after she had her first baby and when she didn't have time for the pom anymore, he was left very lonely and sad all the time, even with the rest of the family chipped in to spend time with him, he just missed his "mommy" terribly). They do get very lonely and sad when they are not given enough quality time from their owners, and it's not a good idea to own one if you have to work long hours and keep them caged or in a pen all day. They want a lot of social interaction and they love to give it.
People should also understand that despite their very cute demeanor, poms are very protective of their owners. They have very strong, larger than life personalities and they have a much bigger sense of their power than they actually have (when a dog escaped its fence and tried to attack my sister's pom, even when I scooped him up, he was trying to wiggle out of my arms to fight the much larger dog). So if you have a pom, you have to firmly but gently establish clear boundaries over what it can and cannot do, and if you have a lot of company, let it learn to trust others and those other people are not a threat to mommy/daddy or itself. :D.
