Nice result, most people would spend a fortune recapping, swapping tubes and declare it a loss when they couldn't get the convergence right. You sir are among the few left who know how to work on this stuff. Hats off to you.

Curtis Mathis was the brand of the TV that taught me about discharging the picture tube before reaching around inside the chase. I still have the scar where my arm was up against the brace that held the chasse when I hit that wire and discharged it through my right hand, up through my wrist and out my lower arm near my elbow. Blew a friggin hole right down to nearly the bone. Surprisingly it didn't kill me but I did bounce off a nearby wall and scared the shit out of the radio mechanic that was standing next to me in the commo shop.

When I was stationed with The Old Guard out in Arlington VA, the officers all thought that if you were in Communications, that meant you were an expert in electronics. Now my specialty's were in wire communications, and radio teletype, none of that prepared me to fix TV'S however before the Army I did fix TV'S for all my relatives so I did know how to change tubes. That was about it. One day the damn Regimental Commander carried in a Curtis Mathes desktop and dropped it in the commo shop. Fix it! He said and left. So it was the radio mechanic and I began digging tubes out to take across from the fort to a drug store and check them. While reaching for a tube, I managed to make contact with some high voltage. It went into my finger, burning the hell out of it, and out near my elbow which was resting on the chasse. Blew a damn hole in my ARM! That was the last TV I worked on, it was 1975.

Yes I am also in Arlington Va, life it sucks here just like a third world country. I build toob radios to keep me calm cool and collected through all these doomsday end of times biblical tribulation. I can’t tolerate especially when I see people wearing mask on the bike trail and in the parks, it gets me all fired up! I’m angry as hell dawg

I changed so many 25" CRT's in-home during the 70's I've lost count. "$93.50 plus parts" was the mantra back in the day. Such fond memories..
And you're right - laying the combos face down was a bitch. I remember a 27" b&w (can't recall who made it) some old guy loved and would not give up. He wasn't having any of that "phony colored" stuff. He was right, with a new tube it looked pretty darned sharp.

There is a guy in a nursing home who had an old black and white set brought into his room. He says it is the best way to watch the Flintstones. He has been watching the Flintstones since it first came out, he has never seen them in color. I asked him why he refused to watch it in color. He said it is his favorite show and he loves the characters. He said he hate to watch it in color and find out Fred and Barney were a couple of colored fellas. He is a wild one alright.

They had a 2-3 year lifespan with regular family use when new, it's a wonder there are any of these tubes left. I started installing them working after school at about age 12. The Ap22 I think was worse than the XP22.

I remember so well when the T.V. repair man would be called up, and he came with the tube box, and started the testing and replacement of bad tubes. I'm only 53, kids today have so much tech, they have no Idea, the way it was. BTW, final setup looks more than acceptable, for a daily viewer.

at times I changed CRTs in the customers house. Hated doing that!
This is a fantastic video. Lots of steps to properly setup a new Picture bulb. Things can go bad. The older guys I was fortunate to work with back then had always told me to ignore the outside edges when doing convergence. If shadow mask on replacement tube is bad, purity is impossible to get correct. Sent many rebuilds back due to this problem.
Might be my favorite project yet Shango!! Love it-

You wonder how labor was ever cheap enough to build stuff like that Packard Bell. There must be hundreds of hours of work in one of those. I also wonder how the engineers communicated to to the people assembling them the proper clearances between parts required to avoid arcing. I suppose you don't have the problem of carbon tracking in point to point, but a PCB does give the engineer the ability to tightly specify component placement and routing.

@@shango066 would the set explode without dynamic convergence plugged in?
i live in europe and to be honest i never seen color vacum bulb tv, i have few mixed ic ones from my childhood, but that not the same
i know for a fact that with a polish 70-90's set you would be at least able to swap parts around, because they were very modular , like people here put vacum bulb tuners to modular ic sets and do other wierd constructions like mixing brands and stuff to keep old tv's alive or upgrade them with teletext or aditional inputs up until late 90's . My local rtv service guy inspired me once when he bypased sync impulse generation of one fairly new fried jungle ic tv, by installing one part from russian black and white transistor set on top of it. So everything is possible (well people bring it back few years later because rgb input didnt work after that repair , but they never asked for it to work the first time)
Imyself upgraded my vintage 1985 tv to autodetect and support composite and rgb signals and switch to av mode by just following old schematics and making my own pcb's, but i have no luck to crt's and i am simply curious if inline crt with integrated static convergence even in theory could work in tube set. i am not asking you to do that because it would be more of an investment than it is worth but i simply like wierd stuff and random constructions from nothing so i am curious if someone could macgyver it if he gone mad.

Modern crt is inline not delta, so dynamic convergence circuitry is not needed and the yoke is anamorphic and factory fixated to the crt for static convergence. CRT neck is thinner so voltages for deflection, and on cathodes and grids are different. Phosfors may be different so white balance and gamma (color linearity) is not same, your colors will be off. Modern CRT will be RGB driven on cathode, old crt probably color difference (luminance on cathode, color difference on grid). Et cetera.

With good CRTs getting harder to find, someone needs to come up with a magic box with a cable that plugs into a 1960s CRT socket on one side and one that plugs into a $200 flat-screen from Wall Mart on the other. Just plug it all up and find some way to suspend the Wall-Mart special behind the safety glass.

Actually this might be doable. You'd need to use the deflection yoke from the newer tube. The new yoke would have lower impedances for horiz and vert coils. I'm sure Shango could figure out a suitable transformer arrangement. At least that way he'd have a use for 90s black plastic TVs instead of Killary EOL videos. Love that video:

By 1970 the Sets were relatively Stable, you didn't need a Tech coming over to do a Convergence Alignment if you relocated the Set in a position 90 degrees from where it was. I remember the Prior Sets not being as Stable.

You know what we use “electrical” tape for around here? Closing trash bags.

    • @pcno2832

Electrical tape is great for wiring harnesses as long as you wind it tightly and superglue the ends. It's also OK for permanently joining cables as long as you knot the connections and stagger them so they don't short. Id trust that kind of connection far more than some of the crappy crimps I've had to repair. I don't make a habit of using it where solder lugs are available, but I guess anyone who is already bypassing a circuit breaker won't be a stickler for details.

Hmm... a few things come to mind: 1) Don’t bypass breakers. Just don’t. Find the actual problem and fix it. 2) The problem with electrical tape is the adhesive - it doesn’t stay stuck, and leaves a nasty residue when it does inevitably fail. Given the choice I always go for heat-shrink tubing, and sometimes zip ties... it just works better. 3) Sometimes crimped connections are better than soldered ones; specifically in situations where a soldered connection is prone to cracking. However, it’s gotta be a good crimp - improperly done ones are prone to failure.

Electric tape is the best bandage in the tropics ! (does't come loose when sweating etc) ) . . spent decades taped up with electric tape on occasions , learned to get light coloured tape so it would't stand out . . just knocking around out bush getting knocks & scrapes , still use it to prevent blisters in ill fitting footware

If there is high cathode current on H-out, first I would check capacitor between H-oscillator and H-out tube G1. Capacitor can be leaky and couse excessive DC current.
