As an Athetist trying to grasp a better understanding of faith in general this interview and your channel are a beautiful discovery, thank you for these videos
As an Anglican, I look at Christ everyday to receive the grace I need to be saved at the end. He gained our salvation but this salvation has not come to it's completion until I finally am in His presence and His kingdom forever. I was saved, I am being saved and I will be saved.
I love everything you said here. I've been in a lot of dialogue w/ Catholics and they have a different way of believing in salvation, that they don't ever really know if they'll stay in the state of grace and of sanctification. So then it's a presumption to assume one's salvation, and some even say a sin of presumption. I don't believe that way, but it can chip away. I trust God to complete the work in me that he, and only he started. I'm just holding on tight and trusting. I am saved, I am being saved, and I will be saved. Thank the Lord.
The quality of the sitdown interviews are simply incredible. However you accomplish it is truly some of the highest production value I think I've witnessed on TH-cam and any televised programs. I really like how you steer conversations without undue force but yet still express intent listening and humble curiosity. This format of conversation is both interesting and inspirational for my mind and my faith. Can't get enough, thank you!
Thank you Matt. I’ve watched quite a few of your videos over the years and I have to say you’ve open my eyes to how I can easily fall into traps. I struggle often with the idea that if you’re not worshiping the Lord the way, I am that you’re doing it wrong. Through your interviews I realize that there are true believers in other denominations, and that I have to kill this urge to be judge mental with anyone who doesn’t see worship as I do. This was a great addition to your church visits … it felt different than others and I’m guessing you read him and his answers as well as he read you and your questions. There was a lot in this “episode” you went hard in the paint with the questions and answered very honestly from within him
"A kingdom is a sphere, a place, a territory where the will of the king is done. The Kingdom is anywhere that God's will is done". ....Churches are outposts of the Kingdom. This really made sense to me in a way it hasn't before. I have never thought of the Church in that way.Fascinating.

Coincidently I have come to ask myself a lot of questions that I probably would not have if it wasn’t for your channel. And it has been one out of many reasons for the growth in my faith. I read an Eastern Orthodox pamphlet once that said churches are meant to be embassies for Heaven and we gather at the embassies to remember whose we are, where we really came from and where we'll return, and how we're supposed to live our lives while we're not home.
I was a Baptist for a while. The Anglican high church rite is my home now. It’s a beautiful faith when the church leaders follow the Bible. And when they don’t, The Global South pulls them into line. 👍
I am an ACNA Anglican who deeply appreciates what I sensed you also appreciated - solid evangelical commitment found within an ancient yet relevant tradition. Christianity is not only “worldwide” (catholic) but also spans centuries.
I just happened on this video. I have been praying about my faith. About me being in my way. About my faith lacking the emotional feelings. About believing with doubt. About faith with questions. But the questions and answers here touched me. Then I realized even though in this season I lack that the feeling, I have actually been reading more, studying more, praying more than I ever have. I am having deeper conversations about Gods Word. Thank you. I will be watching this again and again. Truly thank you, I needed this.
keep at it. Faith is a commitment and a decision. Sometimes it has feelings and is emotional, sometimes it's not. Just because you're not feeling the emotional doesn't mean your faith is lacking or faulty. Be kind to yourself about how you are expressing and feeling faith. it waxes and wanes Blessings to you.
It's great when the depth of feelings are there, but they aren't always. No one can sustain an emotional high for any length of time for anything. The best we can hope for is a deeper, abiding peace. I pray you have that. In my times of struggle, I reach out more too and it rewards in the end.
Couldnt agree more.... In my exploration of doubt, I listened to everything from the agnostic informant and cosmic skeptic, to Jordan Peterson and pints with Aquinas. In the journey I realized I believe in Christ and the blood of the cross as my means to salvation. It's like the faith snuck up behind me and got a hold, vs. the other way around.
Really excellent interview. As a British Anglican it was great to see someone talking about the American flavour. So much of it really resonated with me.
As a life-long LCMS member, I can't get on board with women preachers, but I absolutely adore the candor in your interview with Priest Patrick! It's all about the death, the burial, and the resurrection. Wonderful hour, well spent with two men who love Jesus! Also love going through the books of the Bible every day on TMBH. I'm Lutheran too, and I would agree that women cannot be ordained pastors, but can preach outside the context of Sunday worship. But this was a wonderful interview.
@@brendonpremkumar8207 There are some great women teachers online. I do agree that things go sideways in denominations when they allow women preachers, then everything goes liberal and worldly after a time.

With that being said, I can appreciate the supernatural nature and accessibility of the sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church. Since this seems, to me, to be the remedy for much of our Protestant rational-ism. God bless all the people involved in this.
I was brought up in the Baptist Church but since I moved to England I’ve been attending an evangelical Anglican Church . Thank you for this amazing interview . I can see why I’ve been so drawn to the Anglican Church lately !
This is quietly remarkable. I didn't know what to expect when I hit play, but this unfolds into an incredibly articulate explanation of what it means to follow Jesus. Matt, you really did a great job guiding this into the basics of things and then kneading out the great answers Patrick provided. An eloquent and heartfelt presentation for we who seek.

It takes a nearing the end of yourself. I guess visiting churches that were dead in their faith had brought him to this point, and we got to reap the results. His pain was the gain for all of us, including himself. God bless that pastor who gifted us w/ these answers.
It was evident from the outset, Matt, that you were asking from a different perspective in this interview than in many of your other ones-that you had a personal interest in the deeper things and not just curiosity as to why a particular sect/church does such and such a thing in such and such a way. Pastor Patrick’s comments regarding intellectual belief as a separate thing from faith, which he referred to more as trust in Christ, touched a deep place in my soul because I have the intellectual belief, but recognize in myself less of the trust/faith; this helped me see it more clearly. Thank you both for a very meaningful discussion. P.S. Your current Bible series podcast is great. The overviews are very helpful in grasping the timeline of events and how it all fits together.
As a A Catholic, I really appreciated Pastor Patrick sharing his wisdom and witness of the spirit at work in the church and world beyond the cross and resurrection.

Fascinating look into the "low-church" version of the Anglicans. I've lived my life in the mostly - relatively - "high-church" Lutheran Missouri Synod and it is interesting to think about the "messaging" and theology of my denomination in comparison to this so-called "low-church" version of Anglicanism (which isn't that far removed, apparently). Really nice video, Matt... ...and, BTW, I'm loving your "trip through the Bible" podcast series...
Great to see another LCMS brother. I'm a former Pentecostal/non-denominational, not so much out of conviction, but because that's the church I grew up in. As I did more digging into theology and looking into what the early church taught and practiced, I found myself deciding between two churches that hold closest to the practice and beliefs of the early Christians - the Lutheran church and Orthodox church. I ultimately decided to become a Lutheran (LCMS) as I do believe the words of God (scripture) have more authority than the words of man, and I find the gospel and the worship of Christ to be more emphasized in the Lutheran church. I recently started attending a local LCMS church and I'm going through a Catechism class to become a communicant member. I really enjoy the high-church, liturgical tradition. There's so much beauty and meaning in the Divine Service.
It really seems to depend on the pastor, and this pastor is very biblically sound. Even though I was raised in apparently low church denominations, I've went to CAtholic Mass the last few years. It did seem a shame w/ those modern stained glass windows, and having an airplane in one, rather than showing the gospel, as high churches do. Innovation in architecture doesn't mean the pastor is innovating his theology though. This man was very sound and devout, and bolstered Matt's spirit so much. Taking all the those tough and probing questions like a true man of God.
the pastor doesn't really get into it, but it's significant that he's ACNA and not another flavor of Anglican. In the US, there are several flavors, but ACNA (which I belong to... there it is) is biblically sound

Ive seen all of your Church Visits and sit downs with those pastors, some of the videos ive seen multiple times like the antiochian orthodox videos. But, this video is a special one because I believe you are asking some particularly probing and deep questions on the nature of Faith. I align very closely with the hypothetical christian you describe, and I believe many more christians like me appreciate you asking such difficult questions.
It's beautiful that God led Matt to this guy at a point in his walk where he was struggling with not 'feeling' the reality of God, but still wanting to believe, and knowing intellectually that it still all made sense. I love the pastoral response of this pastor when he caught onto this questioning as being of a more personal nature.
Thank you for your fair and insightful interview. I'm a member of an ACNA church in MA. This interweaving of the historical beliefs of the church with the addressing of the challenges of living in contemporary times, the caring for the needs of wounded people and the rest of God's creation; this kind of blending of intellectual assent with the transforming of the heart is what attracted me to the ACNA not long after it's founding as a denomination. And it is what keeps me there.
I spend the last several years struggling to find a church home. I honestly didn’t even know what I was looking for, I only knew what didn’t feel right. Finally I just gave up and decided that whatever I was looking for didn’t exist. I figured I would just remain church-less. Shortly after I gave up, the Lord opened my eyes to a church I never even knew existed that was only 10 minutes away from my home. It is an Anglican Church that is part of the ACNA. I went there once and fell in love and have been going ever since. I have found the liturgical worship style and the mix of evangelical beliefs with Catholic traditions to be exactly what my heart was longing for. I love the Anglican tradition of “The Middle Way”. It has been healing to my heart.
That really reminds me of what the different denominations are all about. Catholics don't understand it and think it's just schisms and not wanting to be under papal authority. God knows we are so different, and different people need a different church home.
You have a lot of great interviews, this has to be my favorite one; I keep coming back to it. I feel like it does a good job of getting to the heart of what the kingdom values are about!
Your humility and gratitude towards your listeners and engagers is inspiring to put it mildly. The more I follow your cared-for content the more I learn about conversation as service. I'm not even sure I understand what that means, but the fruit of your service (and the precurring sacrifice) is so evident in the comments of your videos the community you've gathered as a whole. Conversation can surely be an object of stewardship and you have exemplified that in an environment so desert of sacrificial discussion. From one internet stranger to another, thank you Matt.

What an excellent interview! Rigorous and gracious! I have found my self a home at a local local church Anglican church in Alpharetta Georgia. I absolutely adore the community and I’m doing my best for into it so that it can be around for as long as it can be.
As a woman, I’m deeply interested in and impacted by the roles of women within the church as defined by different denominations. I would love to see a panel type discussion on the topic! I know what I believe but I’m so interested in how others interpret and apply their belief. I love how he explained that their are no hierarchies in the kingdom
I am an ordained female pastor in the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. We have excellent resources related to the issue of women in ministry. Please also look to Christians for Biblical Gender Equality (CBE International) for additional resources. Both ministries can be found online.
Matt, really the most open interview/conversation you have had yet. I also really appreciated that you were more open about what you believe. I also appreciate how you try not to talk down to those theologies that don't resonate with you. Also, doubt is not a measure of faith. In my mind, they work together to help us grow in faith and full surrender and trust in Christ. Unbelief seems different to me from doubt. I know I am probably mincing words. Or maybe the better term is non-belief. Anyway, keep it coming. Thank you.
As an Anglican brought up in England and Australia, I found this particular expression of Anglicanism so interesting. And a great example of the broad Church aspect of Anglicanism. A church which has embraced the ordination of women, which has accepted female headship, which deeply values communion, which teaches the Alpha course, which calls its leader 'Pastor'. I have never come across this kind of mixture of elements which would not be found together in either high, low, or middle churches in Australia. So very interesting.
Every time I watch these church visit videos (I've been through everyone in this channel's series) I can't help but think no matter how far apart any person may be from another in their experience of God and explaining their beliefs as we perceive them walking into that conversation, that once we sit down and civilly work through what we know and what we hold in faith about God... wow... just wow... every time that gap looks non-existent when we get down into the details. These video really do drive understanding and not in some artificial way. The questions are tough, but purposeful in driving constructive conversation and each pastor/minister/priest you talk to shows genuine concern in their answer not in some boiler plate manner, but like it was described here in this video by Matt himself... they really care about what Matt is asking and want to meet him on it where Jesus would have them do so. Just wonderful stuff. I never come away from these without learning something and often I come away with learning well more than I thought going in. Thank you for that Matt. Keep up the great work on this project. It has tremendous value and is truly a ministry of God's work that you are doing.
I don't think Matt shows the really modernist wishy washy pastors though. He seemed to allude in his video talking about how much this interview revived his spirit, after visiting some of the really dead churches that had departed from a solid biblical stance, that he visits them, but maybe doesn't post those interviews. I would guess if he is demoralized, he doesn't want to share those ones.
I am so glad I found this interview. Have journey from evangelical church to United Methodist where we love the liturgy and beautiful worship space, and tomorrow going to visit an Anglican Church tomorrow.
I really enjoyed this interview. A firm foundation of love and respect for our Lord and Savior and with the Holy Spirit these men can have an enlightening conversation that reflects the light of the Lord. Really well done!

(Now that I've finished watching) Regarding the topic of women in ministry (from the beginning of this video), I recently heard an interview with biblical scholar Philip B. Payne on his upcoming book. It really opened my eyes about Paul's views of women and it doesn't sound like he's merely trying to appeal to modern Western sensibilities. I'd be super curious to see you do a review of the book when it comes out! It's called "The Bible vs Biblical Womanhood."
@@cupfulofeathers The bible showed there were many Godly women helping w/ the ministry, aiding the apostles. There were no women ministers. It does seem to undo denominations, and it lets in liberal ideologies when that happens.
I’m hearing him say that it’s about allegiance to Christ, not a feeling or administered or a manifestation, and I completely agree. And allegiance means dying to self, carrying my cross and being “in Christ” and representing him to this world.
I absolutely LOVE these conversations! It causes me to look at why I believe what I do, and to allow space to appreciate the different expressions of Christian faith. After I found out this church is part of the ACNA, and that they have an “ordained woman” on staff, I stopped watching. But then I sat down and watched the whole thing. I must say that this was one of my favourite of your videos. Thank you. God bless you.
We can miss out if we just assume someone will be full of error, because we discern an error in their denomination. This pastor stayed the course in his church. His belief and theology is sound. He didn't seem to take a side and he kept this church strong by staying w/ the ministry. I got the impression he is neutral. No political side. I'm not for women preachers either, but I was blessed by this and Matt sure was too.
I've been in the Anglican church (UK) all my life, but with the Church of England now turning away from God's Word that may be coming to an end. Thankful for our brothers and sisters in the Global South praying for us and taking a stand.
From what we hear the Free Ch. of England is striving to be a sane answer for those rejecting Ch. of E. Liberalism. Check out the Rev. Calvin Robinson.
I know it's been awhile since you saw this, can you remember what it was about their talking about communion that challenged you? Can you share what kind of church you go to and your past views of communion, whether a memorialist stance, or true presence.
Matt, since your background is E-Free (which genetically comes from Lutheran Pietism), there's a lot of interesting pieces moving around when it comes to questions of ecclesiology; individualist and communitarian. The Lutheran tradition has historically resembled the Catholic model of cradle-to-grave sacramental communitarianism, with the caveat that internal, living-faith (individual) is the only necessary posture within us in order to benefit from this sacramental system (collective). This is distinct from Roman Catholicism, which teaches "faith, hope, and love (works)" as three-parts equally necessary Pietism historically sought to emphasize more heavily the internal and individual components of the ecclesial dynamic (not inherently denying that the sacramental community was necessary for our union with Christ)... But as time went on and Pietism eventually developed out of Lutheranism into the various "Free Church" movements, the sacramental-communitarian element was dropped, and only the internal, individual faith emphasis remained. I consider myself a (high church) Lutheran Pietist, and so both pieces are absolutely essential. A personal, saving relationship with Jesus is absolutely essential and non-negotiable.. But it is equally non-negotiable that it HAS to be a relationship with Jesus _through_ His Church and _through_ the means (word and sacrament) He Himself instituted. After all, Luther's _priesthood of all believers_ was originally called the priesthood of all "the baptized", baptism being administered by the church. Even our direct access to Christ is given by mediation of His bride.
Brother Matt, I read that you are going to explore other religious institutions. I would strongly recommend you to do more Churches particularly Eastern Churches for the people to learn the diversity of the Christian faith and our global presence . 1. Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church 2. Syriac Orthodox Church 3. Syro Malabar Catholic Church 4. Maronite Catholic Church 5. Syro Malankara Catholic Church 6. Armenian Orthodox Church 7. Melkite Catholic Church 8. Church of the East
I really enjoyed the last video about this Church. I am very pleased to see much more from them. Pastor Wildman is fascinating to listen to. He is much more Anglican than many of the Church of England priests I have come across. It is interesting to see how Anglicanism fits into American culture. They use terms like "pastor" etc. which here would denote a Baptist or Pentecostal denomination, and I find that a little strange, but it is very obvious that the Gospel is what is most important to them, and Pastor Wildman is right to say that Anglicanism is a little different in Uganda, Rwanda or wherever it is found so it is no surprise that American Anglicanism takes on the characteristics of the country. I would feel very comfortable in this Church and this man is a very fine parish priest. I am also familiar with Fr (Pastor?) Steve Macias, another Anglican priest from America with a TH-cam presence. It seems to me that the Anglican Church of North America doesn't have the problems of the Church of England and in many ways it is, like the African Anglicans, a more authentic expression of Anglicanism than the mother Church.
As always Matt, you ask all the right questions and are really engaging and thought-provoking while still being respectful and careful with a tradition you don't subscribe to. Even as an Anglican, I found myself with questions for Patrick... which you then asked a few moments later! Thanks for this interview; I love this series of yours :)
I agree with what the pastor teaches, and I think that there was agreement from both parties. And both agree on the blood atonement of Christ that is the core of our faith.
I can't believe Matt said that feelings are linked to faith! He needs to hear what Luther said: "I believe that I cannot by my own reason and strength believe in my Lord Jesus Christ or come to Him, but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts..." God is ALWAYS the one doing the heavy lifting! He always has been! God has always called a PEOPLE, and our relationship with Him is as part of that people. As a part of that people our feelings will come and go, stop then flow, but our feelings aren't the thing -- Jesus on the Cross is the thing! Faith doesn't rest on us, it rests on Him.
Pretty sure he was asking for the sake of pulling out the dialogue. That was the point of the question--and it's a good one: if faith isn't outward signs alone on the one hand, and it isn't a "feeling"/"experience" alone on the other, what exactly is it? This is a very solid question.

My heartfelt thanks to both of you for that interview. I sure appreciate your work. All your questions are helpful and the answers even more so. If you’ll indulge a possible content suggestion a series on what it is for christians to disciple not only by sharing the gospel with the lost but by taking the time to teach one another what it is to walk with Christ daily. What does it look like to die to self, to carry my cross, to suffer for the cause of Christ. The day to day struggle and how we can help one another mature scripturally. I like to sit with pastors and have similar conversations but I don’t enjoy the same cooperation you receive. When I approach any topic that suggests we need to spend more time together in discipling relationships centered on a life in Christ I’m usually shined on or stonewalled. Most everything centers on convenience, fun and encouragement. I live in California so maybe that’s the start of my problem, I don’t know. The utter lack of discipling in the church, the permitted biblical incompetence, the accepted sin both personally and corporately, the lack of relationship among one another outside of Sunday, the laughter at sin, and so on all goes unchecked. Normally I’m being yelled at by this point even by pastors. We can’t disciple ourselves. It takes a church to raise a christian but it seems the church has checked out of that responsibility. I hope you consider exploring this subject. It is quite a stumbling block for me and many who struggle with confidence in the local church. Thanks Matt. Keep up your work.

Really great interview. I first learned about the historic ecclesial and sacramental emphases of Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and even Lutheran church through your videos. I think the way you summarized those traditions around 27:00 doesn't match what I learned from those other videos you did, but I also know that in practice, those traditions can become what you describe in many peoples lives. In any case, this was such an edifying conversation. I grew up in a non-denominational church, and though it wasn't taught this way, I absorbed the idea that my active, enthusiastic intellectual and emotional "belief" and experience thereof was the indication that I was saved. Did I believe enough in "being saved by faith." The ecclesial and sacramental emphases have brought into living practice in my life that I am saved as a gift. Faith is essential, but in practice it almost became, as you described, the "heavy lift." The heavy lift was by Jesus, the Savior, the King, the Lord, the Spirit Baptizer. Even when my mind or my emotions aren't there. Even when I have doubts about all sorts of topics, or even times where I don't know if I even believe, I know I am held by God. The psalms teach us to just throw everything: God I'm in darkness. Do something. I don't even know if I believe, but you have promised to hold me and all I can do is avail myself to you. The weekly participation in communion is an expression of trust in God that isn't merely trust as "mental assent." I still value the lived experience of vibrant faith. I haven't become jaded to that, and am grateful for that emphasis of my youth, but your channel was part of a really helpful transformation into the riches of our shared heritage, the Spirit-led people of God from all times and places.
I really appreciate Pastor Patrick very much a eloquent, balanced sincere speaker I feel the same way about women in ministry. I do certainly believe that the office of Pastor and church leadership is in fact primarily male but we know that God in his sovereignty mercy and providence can in fact work through any human, heart and vessel, yielded to him for the good of humanity and his glory it is not out right heresy for a woman to be ordained to an to serve in a leadership role an every woman pastor I have personally known as always paid respect, acknowledgment and honor to a male Pastor, Bishop or elder that they served under, and we’re accountable to.
Churches largely do much better w/ men in leadership and ministry positions. When denominations let women into ministry, the denomination usually splinters after a time w/ every other liberal practice and gets away from biblical precepts. It's not that women can't minister. There are a number of women's channels that taught me so much.
@@saintejeannedarc9460 I appreciate you and yes sadly many churches have sold out to liberal theology, and a new age philosophies that bring no real healing to humanity but many of the churches I’ve been in had a great accountability system with a deep love for truth of the Gospel.
This is without a doubt a great interview. It reminds me of the interview with Jordan Peterson and Newt Gingrich. When thinking men discuss issues with this level of thoughtfulness it becomes, truly, a work of art in itself.
Hi Matt, I really appreciate this video. The talk on faith was especially interesting to me, I have bipolar disorder and my faith fluctuates so much depending on whether I'm manic or depressed. It's exhausting and sometimes I wonder if my faith is an artificial product of my disease, but Im trying to hold on
In the hymn Tantum Ergo, there is a verse that says " Let faith provide a supplement for the failure of the senses". When the reverend kept emphasising that "we really believe this stuff", I asked myself, do I really believe this stuff. I have some questions, and I have some doubts sometimes but I guess in my heart of hearts I do believe this and this faith transcends all doubts. That's why I'm still around, that's why I cannot be an atheist despite all the questions in my head. This conversation was different and that made all the difference.
Hey Matt, Was happy to see you resume this series of visiting the many strands of churches in America. It is a great concept that allows disciples of Jesus to see a connection with others outside of the walls where we attend. Thanks for continuing this series! I also want to share a point for consideration. It is not so much what you said as much as what you said is the sentiment that is taught in all churches. That is, "It starts with me." I want to encourage all of us to rethink that statement in light of the Bible. God made it clear where it starts in Genesis 1. For those that do not believe the Old Testament has relevance to being a Christian, then check out Acts 17:14-34. And see where "it" starts with. Cheers! I go to a charismatic Anglican church in west London. I heard in conversations in some circles that the ACNA is not officially recognized as a "province" or "branch" of Anglicanism as a whole, at least not yet, which is interesting.

As an Anglican, I look at Christ everyday to receive the grace I need to be saved at the end. He gained our salvation but this salvation has not come to it's completion until I finally am in His presence and His kingdom forever. I was saved, I am being saved and I will be saved.
I love everything you said here. I've been in a lot of dialogue w/ Catholics and they have a different way of believing in salvation, that they don't ever really know if they'll stay in the state of grace and of sanctification. So then it's a presumption to assume one's salvation, and some even say a sin of presumption. I don't believe that way, but it can chip away. I trust God to complete the work in me that he, and only he started. I'm just holding on tight and trusting. I am saved, I am being saved, and I will be saved. Thank the Lord.
This is a beautiful expression of trust in Christ and the hope and trust of perseverance in Him.
The quality of the sitdown interviews are simply incredible. However you accomplish it is truly some of the highest production value I think I've witnessed on TH-cam and any televised programs. I really like how you steer conversations without undue force but yet still express intent listening and humble curiosity. Thank you Matt. I’ve watched quite a few of your videos over the years and I have to say you’ve open my eyes to how I can easily fall into traps. I struggle often with the idea that if you’re not worshiping the Lord the way, I am that you’re doing it wrong. Through your interviews I realize that there are true believers in other denominations, and that I have to kill this urge to be judge mental with anyone who doesn’t see worship as I do. This was a great addition to your church visits … it felt different than others and I’m guessing you read him and his answers as well as he read you and your questions. There was a lot in this “episode” you went hard in the paint with the questions and answered very honestly from within him
"A kingdom is a sphere, a place, a territory where the will of the king is done. The Kingdom is anywhere that God's will is done". ....Churches are outposts of the Kingdom. This really made sense to me in a way it hasn't before. I have never thought of the Church in that way.Fascinating.

I read an Eastern Orthodox pamphlet once that said churches are meant to be embassies for Heaven and we gather at the embassies to remember whose we are, where we really came from and where we'll return, and how we're supposed to live our lives while we're not home.

keep at it. Faith is a commitment and a decision. Sometimes it has feelings and is emotional, sometimes it's not. Just because you're not feeling the emotional doesn't mean your faith is lacking or faulty. Be kind to yourself about how you are expressing and feeling faith. it waxes and wanes Blessings to you.
It's great when the depth of feelings are there, but they aren't always. No one can sustain an emotional high for any length of time for anything. The best we can hope for is a deeper, abiding peace. I pray you have that. In my times of struggle, I reach out more too and it rewards in the end.

Couldnt agree more.... In my exploration of doubt, I listened to everything from the agnostic informant and cosmic skeptic, to Jordan Peterson and pints with Aquinas. In the journey I realized I believe in Christ and the blood of the cross as my means to salvation. It's like the faith snuck up behind me and got a hold, vs. the other way around.

It takes a nearing the end of yourself. I guess visiting churches that were dead in their faith had brought him to this point, and we got to reap the results. His pain was the gain for all of us, including himself. God bless that pastor who gifted us w/ these answers.
It was evident from the outset, Matt, that you were asking from a different perspective in this interview than in many of your other ones-that you had a personal interest in the deeper things and not just curiosity as to why a particular sect/church does such and such a thing in such and such a way.
Pastor Patrick’s comments regarding intellectual belief as a separate thing from faith, which he referred to more as trust in Christ, touched a deep place in my soul because I have the intellectual belief, but recognize in myself less of the trust/faith; this helped me see it more clearly. Thank you both for a very meaningful discussion.
P.S. Your current Bible series podcast is great. The overviews are very helpful in grasping the timeline of events and how it all fits together.

Fascinating look into the "low-church" version of the Anglicans. I've lived my life in the mostly - relatively - "high-church" Lutheran Missouri Synod and it is interesting to think about the "messaging" and theology of my denomination in comparison to this so-called "low-church" version of Anglicanism (which isn't that far removed, apparently). Really nice video, Matt...

It doesn't seem that far because high church anglicans are basically catholics without the pope.
Great to see another LCMS brother. I'm a former Pentecostal/non-denominational, not so much out of conviction, but because that's the church I grew up in. As I did more digging into theology and looking into what the early church taught and practiced, I found myself deciding between two churches that hold closest to the practice and beliefs of the early Christians - the Lutheran church and Orthodox church. I ultimately decided to become a Lutheran (LCMS) as I do believe the words of God (scripture) have more authority than the words of man, and I find the gospel and the worship of Christ to be more emphasized in the Lutheran church. I recently started attending a local LCMS church and I'm going through a Catechism class to become a communicant member. I really enjoy the high-church, liturgical tradition. There's so much beauty and meaning in the Divine Service.
It really seems to depend on the pastor, and this pastor is very biblically sound. Even though I was raised in apparently low church denominations, I've went to CAtholic Mass the last few years. It did seem a shame w/ those modern stained glass windows, and having an airplane in one, rather than showing the gospel, as high churches do. Innovation in architecture doesn't mean the pastor is innovating his theology though. This man was very sound and devout, and bolstered Matt's spirit so much. Taking all the those tough and probing questions like a true man of God.
the pastor doesn't really get into it, but it's significant that he's ACNA and not another flavor of Anglican. In the US, there are several flavors, but ACNA (which I belong to... there it is) is biblically sound

Ive seen all of your Church Visits and sit downs with those pastors, some of the videos ive seen multiple times like the antiochian orthodox videos. But, this video is a special one because I believe you are asking some particularly probing and deep questions on the nature of Faith. I align very closely with the hypothetical christian you describe, and I believe many more christians like me appreciate you asking such difficult questions.

It's beautiful that God led Matt to this guy at a point in his walk where he was struggling with not 'feeling' the reality of God, but still wanting to believe, and knowing intellectually that it still all made sense.

Thank you for your fair and insightful interview. I'm a member of an ACNA church in MA. This interweaving of the historical beliefs of the church with the addressing of the challenges of living in contemporary times, the caring for the needs of wounded people and the rest of God's creation; this kind of blending of intellectual assent with the transforming of the heart is what attracted me to the ACNA not long after it's founding as a denomination. And it is what keeps me there.
I spend the last several years struggling to find a church home. I honestly didn’t even know what I was looking for, I only knew what didn’t feel right. Finally I just gave up and decided that whatever I was looking for didn’t exist. I figured I would just remain church-less. Shortly after I gave up, the Lord opened my eyes to a church I never even knew existed that was only 10 minutes away from my home. It is an Anglican Church that is part of the ACNA. I went there once and fell in love and have been going ever since. I have found the liturgical worship style and the mix of evangelical beliefs with Catholic traditions to be exactly what my heart was longing for. I love the Anglican tradition of “The Middle Way”. It has been healing to my heart.

That really reminds me of what the different denominations are all about. Catholics don't understand it and think it's just schisms and not wanting to be under papal authority. God knows we are so different, and different people need a different church home.
You have a lot of great interviews, this has to be my favorite one; I keep coming back to it. I feel like it does a good job of getting to the heart of what the kingdom values are about!
Your humility and gratitude towards your listeners and engagers is inspiring to put it mildly. The more I follow your cared-for content the more I learn about conversation as service. I'm not even sure I understand what that means, but the fruit of your service (and the precurring sacrifice) is so evident in the comments of your videos the community you've gathered as a whole. Conversation can surely be an object of stewardship and you have exemplified that in an environment so desert of sacrificial discussion. From one internet stranger to another, thank you Matt.

I have found my self a home at a local local church Anglican church in Alpharetta Georgia. I absolutely adore the community and I’m doing my best for into it so that it can be around for as long as it can be.
As a woman, I’m deeply interested in and impacted by the roles of women within the church as defined by different denominations. I would love to see a panel type discussion on the topic! I know what I believe but I’m so interested in how others interpret and apply their belief. I love how he explained that their are no hierarchies in the kingdom
I am an ordained female pastor in the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. We have excellent resources related to the issue of women in ministry. Please also look to Christians for Biblical Gender Equality (CBE International) for additional resources. Both ministries can be found online.

Matt, really the most open interview/conversation you have had yet. I also really appreciated that you were more open about what you believe. I also appreciate how you try not to talk down to those theologies that don't resonate with you. Also, doubt is not a measure of faith. In my mind, they work together to help us grow in faith and full surrender and trust in Christ. Unbelief seems different to me from doubt. I know I am probably mincing words. Or maybe the better term is non-belief. Anyway, keep it coming. Thank you.
As an Anglican brought up in England and Australia, I found this particular expression of Anglicanism so interesting. And a great example of the broad Church aspect of Anglicanism. A church which has embraced the ordination of women, which has accepted female headship, which deeply values communion, which teaches the Alpha course, which calls its leader 'Pastor'. I have never come across this kind of mixture of elements which would not be found together in either high, low, or middle churches in Australia. So very interesting.

Every time I watch these church visit videos (I've been through everyone in this channel's series) I can't help but think no matter how far apart any person may be from another in their experience of God and explaining their beliefs as we perceive them walking into that conversation, that once we sit down and civilly work through what we know and what we hold in faith about God... wow... just wow... every time that gap looks non-existent when we get down into the details. These video really do drive understanding and not in some artificial way. The questions are tough, but purposeful in driving constructive conversation and each pastor/minister/priest you talk to shows genuine concern in their answer not in some boiler plate manner, but like it was described here in this video by Matt himself... they really care about what Matt is asking and want to meet him on it where Jesus would have them do so. Just wonderful stuff. I never come away from these without learning something and often I come away with learning well more than I thought going in. Thank you for that Matt. Keep up the great work on this project. It has tremendous value and is truly a ministry of God's work that you are doing.
I don't think Matt shows the really modernist wishy washy pastors though. He seemed to allude in his video talking about how much this interview revived his spirit, after visiting some of the really dead churches that had departed from a solid biblical stance, that he visits them, but maybe doesn't post those interviews. I would guess if he is demoralized, he doesn't want to share those ones.

Regarding the topic of women in ministry (from the beginning of this video), I recently heard an interview with biblical scholar Philip B. Payne on his upcoming book. It really opened my eyes about Paul's views of women and it doesn't sound like he's merely trying to appeal to modern Western sensibilities. I'd be super curious to see you do a review of the book when it comes out! It's called "The Bible vs Biblical Womanhood."
@@cupfulofeathers The bible showed there were many Godly women helping w/ the ministry, aiding the apostles. There were no women ministers. It does seem to undo denominations, and it lets in liberal ideologies when that happens.
I’m hearing him say that it’s about allegiance to Christ, not a feeling or administered or a manifestation, and I completely agree. And allegiance means dying to self, carrying my cross and being “in Christ” and representing him to this world.

After I found out this church is part of the ACNA, and that they have an “ordained woman” on staff, I stopped watching. But then I sat down and watched the whole thing. I must say that this was one of my favourite of your videos. Thank you. God bless you.
We can miss out if we just assume someone will be full of error, because we discern an error in their denomination. This pastor stayed the course in his church. His belief and theology is sound. He didn't seem to take a side and he kept this church strong by staying w/ the ministry. I got the impression he is neutral. No political side. I'm not for women preachers either, but I was blessed by this and Matt sure was too.
I've been in the Anglican church (UK) all my life, but with the Church of England now turning away from God's Word that may be coming to an end. Thankful for our brothers and sisters in the Global South praying for us and taking a stand.
From what we hear the Free Ch. of England is striving to be a sane answer for those rejecting Ch. of E. Liberalism. Check out the Rev. Calvin Robinson.

I know it's been awhile since you saw this, can you remember what it was about their talking about communion that challenged you? Can you share what kind of church you go to and your past views of communion, whether a memorialist stance, or true presence.
Matt, since your background is E-Free (which genetically comes from Lutheran Pietism), there's a lot of interesting pieces moving around when it comes to questions of ecclesiology; individualist and communitarian.
The Lutheran tradition has historically resembled the Catholic model of cradle-to-grave sacramental communitarianism, with the caveat that internal, living-faith (individual) is the only necessary posture within us in order to benefit from this sacramental system (collective). This is distinct from Roman Catholicism, which teaches "faith, hope, and love (works)" as three-parts equally necessary
Pietism historically sought to emphasize more heavily the internal and individual components of the ecclesial dynamic (not inherently denying that the sacramental community was necessary for our union with Christ)... But as time went on and Pietism eventually developed out of Lutheranism into the various "Free Church" movements, the sacramental-communitarian element was dropped, and only the internal, individual faith emphasis remained.
I consider myself a (high church) Lutheran Pietist, and so both pieces are absolutely essential. A personal, saving relationship with Jesus is absolutely essential and non-negotiable.. But it is equally non-negotiable that it HAS to be a relationship with Jesus _through_ His Church and _through_ the means (word and sacrament) He Himself instituted. After all, Luther's _priesthood of all believers_ was originally called the priesthood of all "the baptized", baptism being administered by the church. Even our direct access to Christ is given by mediation of His bride.

I really enjoyed the last video about this Church. I am very pleased to see much more from them. Pastor Wildman is fascinating to listen to. He is much more Anglican than many of the Church of England priests I have come across. It is interesting to see how Anglicanism fits into American culture. They use terms like "pastor" etc. which here would denote a Baptist or Pentecostal denomination, and I find that a little strange, but it is very obvious that the Gospel is what is most important to them, and Pastor Wildman is right to say that Anglicanism is a little different in Uganda, Rwanda or wherever it is found so it is no surprise that American Anglicanism takes on the characteristics of the country. I would feel very comfortable in this Church and this man is a very fine parish priest. I am also familiar with Fr (Pastor?) Steve Macias, another Anglican priest from America with a TH-cam presence. It seems to me that the Anglican Church of North America doesn't have the problems of the Church of England and in many ways it is, like the African Anglicans, a more authentic expression of Anglicanism than the mother Church.

I agree with what the pastor teaches, and I think that there was agreement from both parties. And both agree on the blood atonement of Christ that is the core of our faith.
I can't believe Matt said that feelings are linked to faith!
He needs to hear what Luther said: "I believe that I cannot by my own reason and strength believe in my Lord Jesus Christ or come to Him, but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts..."
God is ALWAYS the one doing the heavy lifting! He always has been!
God has always called a PEOPLE, and our relationship with Him is as part of that people. As a part of that people our feelings will come and go, stop then flow, but our feelings aren't the thing -- Jesus on the Cross is the thing! Faith doesn't rest on us, it rests on Him.
Pretty sure he was asking for the sake of pulling out the dialogue.
That was the point of the question--and it's a good one: if faith isn't outward signs alone on the one hand, and it isn't a "feeling"/"experience" alone on the other, what exactly is it?
This is a very solid question.

My heartfelt thanks to both of you for that interview. I sure appreciate your work. All your questions are helpful and the answers even more so. If you’ll indulge a possible content suggestion a series on what it is for christians to disciple not only by sharing the gospel with the lost but by taking the time to teach one another what it is to walk with Christ daily. What does it look like to die to self, to carry my cross, to suffer for the cause of Christ. The day to day struggle and how we can help one another mature scripturally. I like to sit with pastors and have similar conversations but I don’t enjoy the same cooperation you receive. When I approach any topic that suggests we need to spend more time together in discipling relationships centered on a life in Christ I’m usually shined on or stonewalled. Most everything centers on convenience, fun and encouragement. I live in California so maybe that’s the start of my problem, I don’t know. The utter lack of discipling in the church, the permitted biblical incompetence, the accepted sin both personally and corporately, the lack of relationship among one another outside of Sunday, the laughter at sin, and so on all goes unchecked. Normally I’m being yelled at by this point even by pastors. We can’t disciple ourselves. It takes a church to raise a christian but it seems the church has checked out of that responsibility. I hope you consider exploring this subject. It is quite a stumbling block for me and many who struggle with confidence in the local church. Thanks Matt. Keep up your work.

Really great interview. I first learned about the historic ecclesial and sacramental emphases of Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and even Lutheran church through your videos. I think the way you summarized those traditions around 27:00 doesn't match what I learned from those other videos you did, but I also know that in practice, those traditions can become what you describe in many peoples lives. In any case, this was such an edifying conversation. I grew up in a non-denominational church, and though it wasn't taught this way, I absorbed the idea that my active, enthusiastic intellectual and emotional "belief" and experience thereof was the indication that I was saved. Did I believe enough in "being saved by faith." The ecclesial and sacramental emphases have brought into living practice in my life that I am saved as a gift. Faith is essential, but in practice it almost became, as you described, the "heavy lift." The heavy lift was by Jesus, the Savior, the King, the Lord, the Spirit Baptizer. Even when my mind or my emotions aren't there. Even when I have doubts about all sorts of topics, or even times where I don't know if I even believe, I know I am held by God. The psalms teach us to just throw everything: God I'm in darkness. Do something. I don't even know if I believe, but you have promised to hold me and all I can do is avail myself to you. The weekly participation in communion is an expression of trust in God that isn't merely trust as "mental assent."
I still value the lived experience of vibrant faith. I haven't become jaded to that, and am grateful for that emphasis of my youth, but your channel was part of a really helpful transformation into the riches of our shared heritage, the Spirit-led people of God from all times and places.

I really appreciate Pastor Patrick very much a eloquent, balanced sincere speaker I feel the same way about women in ministry. I do certainly believe that the office of Pastor and church leadership is in fact primarily male but we know that God in his sovereignty mercy and providence can in fact work through any human, heart and vessel, yielded to him for the good of humanity and his glory it is not out right heresy for a woman to be ordained to an to serve in a leadership role an every woman pastor I have personally known as always paid respect, acknowledgment and honor to a male Pastor, Bishop or elder that they served under, and we’re accountable to.
Churches largely do much better w/ men in leadership and ministry positions. When denominations let women into ministry, the denomination usually splinters after a time w/ every other liberal practice and gets away from biblical precepts. It's not that women can't minister. There are a number of women's channels that taught me so much.
@@saintejeannedarc9460 I appreciate you and yes sadly many churches have sold out to liberal theology, and a new age philosophies that bring no real healing to humanity but many of the churches I’ve been in had a great accountability system with a deep love for truth of the Gospel.

This is without a doubt a great interview. It reminds me of the interview with Jordan Peterson and Newt Gingrich. When thinking men discuss issues with this level of thoughtfulness it becomes, truly, a work of art in itself.
Hi Matt, I really appreciate this video. The talk on faith was especially interesting to me, I have bipolar disorder and my faith fluctuates so much depending on whether I'm manic or depressed. It's exhausting and sometimes I wonder if my faith is an artificial product of my disease, but Im trying to hold on

In the hymn Tantum Ergo, there is a verse that says " Let faith provide a supplement for the failure of the senses". When the reverend kept emphasising that "we really believe this stuff", I asked myself, do I really believe this stuff. I have some questions, and I have some doubts sometimes but I guess in my heart of hearts I do believe this and this faith transcends all doubts. That's why I'm still around, that's why I cannot be an atheist despite all the questions in my head. This conversation was different and that made all the difference.

Hey Matt, Was happy to see you resume this series of visiting the many strands of churches in America. It is a great concept that allows disciples of Jesus to see a connection with others outside of the walls where we attend. Thanks for continuing this series!
I also want to share a point for consideration. It is not so much what you said as much as what you said is the sentiment that is taught in all churches. That is, "It starts with me." I want to encourage all of us to rethink that statement in light of the Bible. God made it clear where it starts in Genesis 1. For those that do not believe the Old Testament has relevance to being a Christian, then check out Acts 17:14-34. And see where "it" starts with.

I go to a charismatic Anglican church in west London. I heard in conversations in some circles that the ACNA is not officially recognized as a "province" or "branch" of Anglicanism as a whole, at least not yet, which is interesting.
True. ACNA is closer to the Archbishop of Rwanda than the Archbishop of Canterbury.
