Recording an early-Prince-inspired drum sound for my new song

- For my new Point Lobo song, “Kita City,” I wanted to have a drum sound that harkens back to early 80s Prince albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy. I ended up creating a hybrid sound somewhere between the live drums on Dirty Mind (recorded in a rental house on Lake Minnetonka, according to an interview I read with Bobby Z) and the LM-1 drum machine plus live drums on Controversy (recorded in his “Purple House” on Lake Reilly in Chanhassen). Of course sounds mean nothing if it isn’t performed with the right intention, so I made sure to play with that driving, on-top-of-the-beat feel on those recordings.
This song, Kita City, is off of my Tacoma Narrows EP, now available everywhere!

Excellent video. To my understanding, Morris Day played drums on both Controversy and Let's Work. Plus the record deal for the Time was in return for the use of Party Up for which Morris wrote the music. It sounds like Morris playing drums on that too. Either way, it sounds great and you nailed the sound of the drums from that era

Fantastic job making acoustic drums sound like Linn drums! Lol.... Incidentally... the "Prince" sound is the LM1 rimshot, slowed down to the point of aliasing. Also, the clap slowed down severely with lots of reverb. I found great examples of these on Alex Ball's page, he has a download link for WAV samples all ready to be loaded into an MPC.

lol yeah gated reverb is an acquired taste for sure. I believe I tamed it a bit on the final release of the song (coming out Sept 22)
