I basically wanna get up a tree with a single rope and come down later with the same rope, with the least possible weight and equipment. This was perfect. Yes, climber weight and rope diameter both effect the function of your climbing system. The best way to figure out what works and what doesn't is to just try it by making friends with some arborists or investing in a few different ropes
I'd love to see a really simple detailed video on exactly what you did and how to use this stuff. To climbers this is v basic but for a complete novice this is quite complicated to understand.

maybe a question with an obvious answer: how do you attach the rope to the tree branch in the first place? It looks like TREEfool may have threw the rope over a branch, then tied the rope around the bass of the tree? How does TREEfool attach to branches that are ~100 ft high?

Cool setup, seems like a pretty good replacement for a grigri. Maybe you could replace the tibloc with a prusik/distle knot. Certainly cheaper, maybe lighter.
I prefer hand ascended at the top, more weight but nicer to grab on. Using a foot loop instead of ladder makes up most of the weight unless you really need the ladder for some other use. I like something that does not drop me if I let go of the rope or at least a fall arrest device for backup to catch me if something happens. Better safe than sorry.
Finding a prusik that works on a 9mm without biting too hard (thus making it difficult to ascend) is something that I have yet to accomplish. But if you are using an 11 or 12mm rope a prusik would be a great alternative to the tibloc.
hoggif, I fully agree that the ladder was overkill. I didnt have any of my personal gear so I used his ladder for the foot loop. It is much heavier than the foot loop that I use on my personal setup but I did enjoy using it alot!

I ahve used the mega jul with a hand ascender. My biggest problem with it is that I cannot with redirects. It only breaks when the breaking strand is down. When I use something like a gri gri I can have a redirect and pull myself up with a 3 to 1.
No. Its a great tool for emergencies or superlight climbing trips with little focus on rope ascension but a hand ascender is way more awesome for regular use.
I bought a locking edelrid carabiner for the mega jul sport and it doesn't fit as good as yours, weird that they don't design their carabiners to work with their equipment.

Hey this is Devon - that's Metolius's 8-step ladder (www.metoliusclimbing.com/8-step_ladder_aiders.html) with an aluminum tube at the top rung (my mod). You can usually get these on sale (~37$) a few times a year from a variety of online retailers.
For even cheaper you can make a footloop out of 7mm accessory cord, with a scaffold knot and karabiner to join it to your ascender, and a loop knot (or, if you feel really fancy, a double bight figure of eight for both feet) at the botom. Cheap, tough, and small enough to fit in a pocket. Obviously if you plan on aiding or going places you'll need an etrier like the one in the vid then a proper etrier is a *lot* easier to do that with than a homemade one, but for regular treeclimbing/SRT the accessory cord is better IMHO.

Man, the Edelrid Megajul is my favorite peace of kit. Pro tip, when rappelling, throw a small nose crab in that little hole opposite the thumb loop. acts as a release lever, much like the petzl grigri lever, way smooth. The edelrid pure works especially well in this application but the Camp nano 23 and Petzl spirit will work as well.

Might want to stick with their guidelines. Maybe there's another model. Feel free to contact companies directly. Often you will find them to be helpful.
Guess it's a matter of the choosen rope. The thicker the better and Mega Jul supports up to 10.5 mm. And tree climpers using static ropes btw. That's because falls are not expected (always avoid slack rope!) and dynamic ropes absorbing energy during accend.
I would be interested in this too since most rock climbing gear is made for a max of 11mm ropes. I'm guessing the only gear you will find that will fit a 13 mm rope will be arborist stuff.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, my research led to the same conclusion. For 13 mm rope I can only find professional gear: great stuff but very expensive. I will have to decide whether to stick with 13 mm and be prepared to pay more or move to thinner ropes ;)
Super easy cheap trick is to use a prusik cord, learn a VT hitch. Next take a rappel ring pass a bite through ring, capture with carabiner. Use cordage or something to attach that to the carabiner capturing the friction hitch. Boom you have an auto locking single line system that will self advance when you rent the slack
There are quite a few overpriced companies out there (ah-ah-ah-PETZL-choo, oh, excuse me, don't know where that came from). Quite frankly, when a company is greedy, they tend not to care about you either. Some piece of aluminum with a little machining and assembly doesn't cost $200+. If they really cared, they would make a good quality product affordable to as many people as possible to help keep them safe when doing something dangerous.

@@TREEfool As far as I can tell, most arborists wouldn't use the tools or techniques you are using when they are climbing a tree to top it down chunk by chunk using a saw. They have completely different gear and techniques for that type of work. Spreading misinformation is dangerous. I think you are mostly safe, but I agree with Shon, taking your hand off the brake isn't terribly smart. You had no backup in place - a simple prussik you can slide up the brake side while ascending could also be your life saver in that rare but dangerous instance your brake fails for whatever reason. In the end, it's your life on that line, I wouldn't dare force you to change what you are comfortable with, but you should be careful with comments like this one for the people who aren't as experienced as you or I.
@@tueighty , thank you and I agree with you. My initial response sounded very snarky and I apologize! (must have been a long night, haha). Working arborists do indeed use very different gear and most people would agree that it is much safer than the techniques I used in this video. In fact I think I even mentioned in the video that the rope would slip a little bit whenever I would weight the device. I definitely recommend that people use a backup if they're going to remove their hands like i did.
Dude that whole set up is extremely sketchy! Re evaluated what You're doing. Buy proper tree climbing gear. Just some advice from a professional arborist 👍

At least on the previous model tibloc you're supposed to clip the biner around the rope as well. Just fyi for safety

Super easy cheap trick is to use a prusik cord, learn a VT hitch. Next take a rappel ring pass a bite through ring, capture with carabiner. Use cordage or something to attach that to the carabiner capturing the friction hitch. Boom you have an auto locking single line system that will self advance when you rent the slack

There are quite a few overpriced companies out there (ah-ah-ah-PETZL-choo, oh, excuse me, don't know where that came from). Quite frankly, when a company is greedy, they tend not to care about you either. Some piece of aluminum with a little machining and assembly doesn't cost $200+. If they really cared, they would make a good quality product affordable to as many people as possible to help keep them safe when doing something dangerous.

@@jolkraeremeark6949 ya, people see something that they don't understand and they automatically freak out and think you're doing something bad. This can lead to escalation and although you may not be doing anything illegal it will still create a lot of trouble in your day.

There are far better ways to climb trees. If you want to do it, spend more time on TH-cam or just buy Tree Climbers Companion. Don’t stop at this technique shown.

@@TREEfool As far as I can tell, most arborists wouldn't use the tools or techniques you are using when they are climbing a tree to top it down chunk by chunk using a saw. They have completely different gear and techniques for that type of work.
Spreading misinformation is dangerous. I think you are mostly safe, but I agree with Shon, taking your hand off the brake isn't terribly smart. You had no backup in place - a simple prussik you can slide up the brake side while ascending could also be your life saver in that rare but dangerous instance your brake fails for whatever reason.
In the end, it's your life on that line, I wouldn't dare force you to change what you are comfortable with, but you should be careful with comments like this one for the people who aren't as experienced as you or I.
@@tueighty , thank you and I agree with you. My initial response sounded very snarky and I apologize! (must have been a long night, haha). Working arborists do indeed use very different gear and most people would agree that it is much safer than the techniques I used in this video. In fact I think I even mentioned in the video that the rope would slip a little bit whenever I would weight the device. I definitely recommend that people use a backup if they're going to remove their hands like i did.

Dude that whole set up is extremely sketchy! Re evaluated what You're doing. Buy proper tree climbing gear. Just some advice from a professional arborist 👍
