Hi, I visit Italy every year from time when I studied in Padova for one year, but sadly never visit the South. I am going to travel from North to South of Italy by my motorcycle. Finally I am ready to permanently move to Italy. I am looking for the best place to live and work. Can you advise where to look for a house in Calabria? Maybe some good web site? Grazie Mille.
Ahhhh, Calabria.. It truly is Italy's hidden treasure ❤ I am only 33 but I am already planning to 'retire' over there as soon as I put away enough savings to buy a small house with a little garden.. I spent two years over there a decade ago, left because of the economical situation, but I still consider those two years the best time of my life, where I felt and looked my best, for no apparent reason, I think it's the food and the air and the breathtaking views that just makes one enjoy life a whole lot more. The scenery in Calabria is just magical, the green is greener over there, the food tastier than anywhere else, people are so warm and welcoming. I live in Malta currently, a stone throw away, the culture is supposed to be similar and it's the same Mediterranean Sea around me, but I can't even imagine settling here.. Calabria took my heart away 10 years ago and I just KNOW that this is the place where I want to move permanently and start a family. I agree with everything you say, Calabria is a truly beautiful place, peaceful, with pristine nature, and genuine people who enjoy a slow pace of life, their families and friends more than anything. It just feels like home there... I can't wait to be back there, I miss the quietness, the midday breaks for a nap, the olive yards, the green hills falling right into the sea.. There is no place like it ❤
Hi Marta! You named it so eloquently! This is exactly why we do what we do. Calabria is a magical place where the truly important things are recognized and valued. I hope we can see you there sometime soon!
That's where I'm headed. I spent one year in Tropea and Cosenza, and it was the best. I'm of Italian origin living in Canada, but I'm fed up of the snow and all the rest.

In my Calabrese town, Gioia Tauro, we Need a mayor like you. I am truly honored to have seen this video. Thanks for the love you have shown for my Calabria.
Thank you giving such accurate and TRUE information about Italy and highlight what good and positive there is there. Some are stupidity and ignorantly always thinking about mafia when thinking about Italy. But Italy, the good Italy, has nothing to do with that and people shall understand that the vaste majority, practically the totality of Italians are decent people and Italy is indeed beautiful in every sense. I’m glad that you understood this and appreciate what marvelous Italy has to offer. Of course is not all flowers, but where is it after all? Over all Italy has a lot to offer and a lot to enjoy from welcoming people, exceptional gastronomy, magnificent seasides, countrysides, gorgeous mountains , lakes, forests and incomparable history and arts, cities, monuments as no other country in the world! And I don’t say this because...I’m proudly Italian.
Thank you! We actually just did a video addressing the idea of the Mafia because people do ask however the Italian government has done a LOT to ensure that the Mafia is not a problem for the residents and tourists. We have been there for 10 years and have never seen or heard of any problems anyone we know have had. We know lots of people and they run businesses and what not. It has not been a problem. What we have seen is lovely people, beautiful scenery, fantastic food, and just a beautiful atmosphere that you cannot find anywhere else. You are right to be very proud of your country.
Don't believe the media stereotyping and ignorant narrative of Italy because Italy has a great healthcare system and Italy is the 8th largest economy in the world as well as being a G7 country along with UK, Japan, France, USA, Japan, and Canada.
My grandparents were born close to Cozensa in San Marco Argentano. I have been there. It is very beautiful. Might be the same town your grandfather was born
I think that once you have lived in Italy you can't think of living anywhere else. I live at the other end of the country, in the north on Lake Maggiore near the Swiss border. All the things you mention in your video with reference to Calabria are true here too. Wonderful neighbours, amazing food, gorgeous scenery (we have the Alps and the lakes!). Property in this area is much more expensive though, but nowhere near the prices of property in the UK, where I lived before. Nice cool mountain summers here, which for me is an advantage. I can't cope with Calabrian summer temperatures! When you do your Sicily tour, stop off on the Isole Egadi. Marettimo is beautiful.
Hi Stephen, Thank you for your insights! I saw photos of the region of Piedmont because I have not been yet and it is so pretty up there in the Italian Alps. And we will look for Marettimo! Thanks!
@@Zelda279O Como is tourist hell. Very expensive and packed in the summer. I am on the beautiful but unfashionable Lombardy side of Maggiore near the Swiss border where tourists are far fewer and prices much lower. It's much less accessible and we do sometimes get cut off by landslides, etc. but normally Milano is s couple of hours away and the airport is about an hour and a half. The scenery, though, is amazing and you can wander for hours on the endless paths.Or find a little beach and swim in the lake.
My grandmother was born in Calabria. I have toured Italy a few times but never made it to Calabria. I'm working on getting my Italian citizenship recognized so I can move there in a few years.
Oh how great! I had a friend who visited the village where his father was born a long time ago. Once the relatives found out he was a relation they rolled out the red carpet. You might have a big celebration in your future!
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC Do you have any idea how I could connect with family there? My dad was born in Ireland so I am well connected with family there and have an Irish passport so don't even need the Italian citizenship just want to get it recognized. My grandma was six when her family left Italy for New York so no contact with family there.
I'm a foreigner living in northern Italy, unfortunately, and I am glad to see your video and the kind words you describe the people around you with. Calabria, to me, is highly underrated as are the people. I love their food so much, some of the people I love most are from Calabria and the region is so inviting with all those different landscapes.
Hi Domi, Calabria is indeed underrated. the guidebooks skip right over I and it makes no sense to me. The people are so wonderful and there is so much to love about Calabria and really all of Southern Italy.
"You just have to go there (Calabria) and start eating" - love it. Yes, Calabria is amazing in so many ways. Perhaps that is because Calabria is first a state of mind.
I am still about 19 years away from retirement. It is my goal to live in Southern Italy and what you just showed on the video confirms exactly why I want to retire there. It’s just how I envision it. I am very excited!
I’m about 11 years away, really thinking about Calabria. Both my parents were from there and immigrated to the United States. I just visited this June after 11years. It’s just a beautiful region
We spent 8 fun packed days in Southern Italy 2 years ago. My wife and I went for a Joe Satriani concert in Mufaletto (iirc) just north of Bari. But the highlights will always be visiting my parents hometowns of Serra San Bruno and Satriano in Calabria. And Matera was out of this world spectacular. Southern Italy is the heart and culture of Italy. Thanks for your videos!!
Oh yes! we LOVE Matera! It is magical. There is music everywhere! We found an Air BNB in the sassi there and it was an amazing experience! I really want to go back but there is so much of Italy to explore still! We advent yet been to Puglia at all and we HAVE to go!
Super Savvy Travelers, LLC Yeah, Matera was wild. Can’t remember the city associated with Matera but it was an upbeat, modern city. We were there when temps were a scorching 35-39 Celsius including Satriano and Serra San Bruno. Regardless, my heart is filled with memories especially visiting my parents home towns. Matera was icing on the Tiramisu lol
Italy is my favorite place in the world! Loved your presentation. Speaking of retirement, what are the medical facilities like in your area? What is the quality of the care, system, as well as capacity & location (distance)? Retirees likely would want to consider this. Thanks so much!
Hi! How timely! We jstu put up a video on that very subject! YOU can see it here:th-cam.com/video/KuK0uX8ItCE/w-d-xo.html Check out the comment because my friend Bonnie who lives there and is a nurse weighs in with more information.
Yes I agree about the beauty of Calabria and the amazing food I know because I lived in Italy and miss it . My concern is the medical care that lacks and it’s what keeps me living in the USA it’s all great until medical care like hospitalization specialty care then maybe there is need to go to Rome or Bologna .
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC - hi! Very interested in retirement in an affordable and beautiful place. I’m 56 and not sure I can live in 1 Euro house, but with the right help, my husband and I would probably fall in love with the place! I will check the website. Any other guidance or links are appreciated! Thanks!
I am glad I found you channel. I have been thinking about moving back overseas (I lived and worked abroad for 10 years) when I retire-maybe sooner-, so it is good to get an idea of what to expect, price-wise, for housing, and to see it can be quite affordable.
Calabria is truly wonderful, as are many other regions of the country. But having lived in Italy for the past 4 years, I would like to put the word out. Although it may seem idyllic and peaceful, living in Italy is very different from traveling and spending a few weeks here. There is a reason why these villages and one euro houses houses are abandoned, and you have ancestors coming from Italy - people leave, they don’t want to stay here. And doing any house repairs in Italy could be quite a task, let alone structural ones. However, even with good housing, the bureaucracy and the inability to plan your budget (as some services, the heating, for example, have quite unpredictable charges) will always be present in your life. Having said that, I know people who like it here very much but these are usually those who have a lot of savings or can spend their time in various offices, telephone calls, comunas. I hope you will think twice before making the decision to move to Italy. It’s best to come here on holiday. This way your affection for this beautiful country will not be spoilt by the harsh realities of living in the Italian economy. I rarely write comments, but I really hope that for some people this might be useful and motivating to do their own research more thoroughly.
YEs everyone must do their own research and it is best to go and spend some time there before moving however the people I know how have moved, most of them have loved it and continue to love it despite inconveniences. Every place has its problems. You are right though, you must find out before you commit.
Thank you for this great video! My father was born in Reggio, Calabria 95 years ago. His house is still there and he's still a hard working sweetheart. He never naturalized. He's a perm resident of the US, so I am in line for with my paperwork to be recognized and am considering a move to take my family back to where they came from. Covid has slowed things down. Well, anyway, I've subscribed and will be viewing more videos! Ciao' Bella!!
Hi Mia! God bless your dad! Sending our best to him and your family! Reggio Calabria and all of Calabria is so beautiful. This was my first visit and I fell in love!
My ancestors on my mother's side are from Italy. My grandfather and grandmother went back in 1974 for vacation when he had not seen Italy since he was 16 years old.
Thank you for the wonderful informative video! My mother’s family is from Calabria! The Masano’s immigrated to Pennsylvania, and my mother and her brothers and sisters were born here, first generation. We only have our dear 96 year old Aunt Edie, still with us. Our family plans to come and visit, hopefully next year. It would be wonderful to make an investment in a second family home. We are in beautiful Sedona Arizona, and I run Air B&B’s for a living. It is fun to have people come and enjoy this area as much as we enjoy living here. I’ve always said that when I come to Italy, I want to eat my way through the country! It looks as though that will be no problem! 😉😂. Those pictures of the sunset and the coastline are just spectacular. Well actually, all of it is! One day you will be hearing from me. I am blessed that my sister found your channel!!!
I really thank you, everything you say is absolutely true! Most people when they think about Italy, they think of Venice, Rome, Florence, Milan, etc. But they ignore totally the beauty of south Italy!! Just remember one thing, south Italy in 1860 was called “kingdom of two Sicilys” it was an independent state before Italy became what is today, and that was one of the richest place in the world at that time, so you can see still today amazing thing of that antique history. That history give us today our unique food, culture, buildings, piazzas, and much much more. One of the very first school of medicine in the world born in south Italy, same fore one of the very first railway. Last but not least south Italy is in the mediterraneo... something that is really unique, Italy doesn’t have oceans but it has “il mare” that is a totally different way to enjoy the sea! Come to Italy and start to learn a bit of Italian... it will worth the effort and change your life. Benvenuti in Italia :)
Southern Italy has such a rich history. The Magna Graecia, the academies in Crotone, Horace was there. It was a very learned and cultural area. If you get the chance, go visit Paestum. It is absolutely amazing! I wrote a blog post on Super Savvy Travelers.com with Pete's gorgeous pictures.
Chris, thank you for your precious descriptions! Calabria is the hidden gem of Italy, I think many people can discover and appreciate the high-quality lifestyle that you can live here
Thank you Danilo! Yes Calabria is a real treasure with so much to offer everyone especially retirees. I cannot wait to go back and I cannot wait to meet you!
Informative video on Calabria and it seems the cost of living is reasonable and affordable. My parents and ancesters were born and raised there. Thanks for the update on this part of Italy. Anthony Joseph Lucchese
My great great grandfather was from Calabria, unlike many other Americans, which I am an American as well, my great great grandfather moved to Colombia where my ancestors came together and now we are in the US. But I would like to "repatriate" back to Italy, I liked that word. I am trying to convince my parents to retire there, the American retirement culture makes anything else seem like such an adventure when it really could be totally normal and even better. Hopefully these dreams will come true! Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Yes, Calabria is amazing, and I considered it very seriously ( Reggio and Bova) for our part-time retirement move. After a really agonising selection process between the three candidates Porto, Calabria, Saronic, I chose the latter. The list of factors I had to consider was long but to keep it short, Greece offered the best value per square footage of bliss...

Thank you for this video! In doing research, we’ve found that my husband’s great-grandparents emigrated from Calabria, from the town of Saracena . We’re learning more and plan to visit when we can travel again with an eye towards retirement ... eventually. Do you have any thoughts about how people who experience disability are accepted there? Our son is nonverbal autistic and will be with us at least part of the time we are there.
Hi Tobi, From what I have experienced the people there are extremely caring. I cannot imagine anyone that I know there having a problem with your beautiful son. I am sure you would have all the help you need as well.
I'm sure it is lovely. However, I am thrilled with my little French village on the Mediterranean. Nearly thirteen years and Iove it more each day. For those who are searching, there is truly something for everyone but do your homework and identify what you want, need, and what you can't live without.
I'm so glad I found your site! I'm a dreamer, though moving to Italy for my retirement may be an option if handle it just right. How was COVID for you and your village?
Hello, Happily we were not hit really at all in our village and in our area there were very few cases. The South saw it coming and clamped down. It was rough on the residents being shut ins for months but there are all well and happy to be out and about! Let me know if you need help on relocating!
You do have to start the process in the US but you have to complete it in Italy. This is one of the things I address in the course. IT gives you all the steps.
So glad I found this video. My great-great-grandparents are from Santa Agatha Di Essaro, Calabría. Last year my wife and daughter were registered in that commune. I can't wait to visit southern Italy. We are from Argentina. Best regards.
Planning on retiring and want to move to Italy. My 2adult boys, daughter in law and 2 grandkids just got back from visiting Rome and Florence in Nov 2023 and are now planning to move to Tuscany!! I’m interested in living in Scalea/Calabria area for the sea and inexpensive properties. Hope I can meet someday for help in finding a great home! Also, great video!!
Thanks for information on area, but what about taxes, retirement income from usa, visa, can American's actually own property outright, or is it like some other countries, where u own it for only X amount of years, but not outright for generational, what about crime, race per population, actual employment numbers, weather, especially all active volcanoes down there in Southern Italy, Sicily, etc. evac support from Italian Gov., insurance for home investment, citizen's rights to land and prop ownership, etc. otherwise, I think it's beautiful. Love everything about it. nervous about losing everything, like many expats did in Spain, walked away with nothing. lost everything, diff variables of course, but for me, i'd def, keep my home in usa and get vacation home, low investment, but def not permanent, maybe dual citizenship?
Hi Actually almost all of this is addressed n my online course that I am releasing in the next few days. We do not have any active volcanoes in our area so I did not address those. I read all about what happened in Spain and there were some pretty dishonest people there. In my course I give you the data to look for to ensure that nothing like that happens. There are certain things I would NEVER do for that reason.
My parents are both from Calabria, I've spent all my summers there as a teenager, I totally agree on the quality of the food, the beauty of the sceneries, the kindness of the people. As much as I love my parents' heritage I will never retire there. You first need to experience Calabria because it's not for everybody.
It looks like Praia a Mare and San Nicola Arcella. My ex and I loved that area, but found Zambrone and almost bought a villa there for 145k with an insane sea view and beach view. I loved Pizzo, Tropea and Capo Vaticano.
I’m glad I have found your channel, thanks for sharing your experience and shining the spotlight on this authentic, wild and rustic region. I have been traveling to Calabria all my life (my parents were born there) and I lived there with my family when I was a child. There are plenty of reasons why I keep going back and it’s still very undiscovered (compared to other southern regions) which makes it a hidden gem. You need to embrace the region and don’t expect a picture perfect postcard experience, it is not, it has its problems (just like every other place in the world where organized crime happens) but it is stunningly beautiful and its people are its heart, and only here did I feel safe to walk around my parent’s village at 4am in the morning!
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC well done, love your passion for living in Calabria, it’s what this region needs. I do remodeling , self employed , and I am amazed at times in the USA , its like the only option at work you have is fast food if you don't bring your lunch.. ?? I am a bit scared on meeting new people and such, but my kid is grown. Who knows.
I know what you mean. Not to worry about meeting new people. Everywhere we have gone in Italy we are welcomed and they make you a part of the community. We have some bike clubs in our area too. There is beautiful scenery.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC Thanks for the encouragement. I should take my son there , at least to know his roots. Like I said i don't travel much. Twice to Italy only for 2 weeks and a few states in the USA. I guess I inherited my parents immigrant mind thinking.. You come here to work.
I'm Canadian, and our lifestyle is pretty much the same as the US. Toxic, materialistic, and rushed. I'd like nothing better than to spend my last days in southern Italy or southern Spain. And I know exactly what you mean about the Italian diaspora. My city was one of the ones on the receiving end. In high school we used to joke that you could walk into the school cafeteria and shout Hey Tony!, and half the guys there would turn around and say What? I learned a lot of Italian by default.
Agreed! It is so important to really look at what is truly important in life. Very cool that you learned some Italian! I hope we get to see you in Calabria sometime soon!
I'm from Rome myself, but I think it's great you're promoting Calabria as a retirement destination - it's an Italian region that doesn't get nearly enough credit. I discovered Calabria late, too, and am amazed that very few people, in and outside of Italy, know about it and its beauty!
Hi Daniela! So true! When we arrived the first time we could not believe that it had been so g=ignore.d Calabria is really coming into her own and what a treasure for us. PS We ADORE Rome too! Always exciting and vibrant!
Wonderful to hear. I found the opposite in Brescia province. Great jealousy that a foreigner and a nice looking one could move into their midst and not work and go to the opera and have a massage every week and enjoy herself in her retirement. How dare she. The jealousy was so think you could cut it with a knife. Am talking about Gardone Riviera at Lake Garda that was my experience. And when I slipped and broke my ankle no one but no one knocked on my door to ask if I needed a hand. I really regret not choosing the south of Italy because the people are kind and gentle and humble not arrogant jealous Bresciani. I remember when I said to a neighbour just treat me like family the next thing she asked me for money..
I'm Calabrese, so glad that you enjoy our land so much, welcome to everyone that decides to visit and live here ❤️🌶️
Thank you so much! We love everyone we have met there! Very special people!

I’d love to see a video with a breakdown of monthly expenses in order to compare🤩
Thank you Diana! I will put one together!
Super Savvy Travelers, LLC I would appreciate this information as well.
Can you successfully busk there?
Is legal to hire the town builder as a consultant and do the work yourself?
I would like that info as well. Also, what about taxes?
My Grandfather was born in a small town near Cosenza in the 1890s. He married in the US in 1920. Calabria is home.
Oh how amazing! So much history!
Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your insights! I saw photos of the region of Piedmont because I have not been yet and it is so pretty up there in the Italian Alps. And we will look for Marettimo! Thanks!
How affordable is the cheaper areas of lake como?
David Reid no such thing as cheap in lake Como!!
I just visited that area (North of Lake Maggiore). It was breathtaking! Can't wait to go back again!
Thank you for the Italian sub titles.....please do that for all your videos if it’s possible.....I’ve been learning italian this is very helpful
Thank you Kathie! I will try and do that. It is a bit of work but I love the finished product!
Totally agree, love the sub titles

I'm a foreigner living in northern Italy, unfortunately, and I am glad to see your video and the kind words you describe the people around you with. Calabria, to me, is highly underrated as are the people. I love their food so much, some of the people I love most are from Calabria and the region is so inviting with all those different landscapes.
Hi Domi,
Calabria is indeed underrated. the guidebooks skip right over I and it makes no sense to me. The people are so wonderful and there is so much to love about Calabria and really all of Southern Italy.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC I totally agree with you.
"You just have to go there (Calabria) and start eating" - love it. Yes, Calabria is amazing in so many ways. Perhaps that is because Calabria is first a state of mind.
So true and so beautifully stated!
I am still about 19 years away from retirement. It is my goal to live in Southern Italy and what you just showed on the video confirms exactly why I want to retire there. It’s just how I envision it. I am very excited!
This is so great! In the meantime come for a vacation!
I’m about 11 years away, really thinking about Calabria. Both my parents were from there and immigrated to the United States. I just visited this June after 11years. It’s just a beautiful region
You forgot to mention the most amazing sunsets in the world. I have seen many of them in many different countries, Calabria beats them all.

Check out the comment because my friend Bonnie who lives there and is a nurse weighs in with more information.

I am glad I found you channel. I have been thinking about moving back overseas (I lived and worked abroad for 10 years) when I retire-maybe sooner-, so it is good to get an idea of what to expect, price-wise, for housing, and to see it can be quite affordable.

Spicy food capital of Italy. Not to mention Brasilena is just about the best thing I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I love Calabria!
OOO I will have to try it!
My ancestors on my mother's side are from Italy. My grandfather and grandmother went back in 1974 for vacation when he had not seen Italy since he was 16 years old.
WOW! I am so glad they got to go back. Many who left never did. That makes me sad.

My great great grandfather was from Calabria, unlike many other Americans, which I am an American as well, my great great grandfather moved to Colombia where my ancestors came together and now we are in the US. But I would like to "repatriate" back to Italy, I liked that word.

In my course I give you the data to look for to
ensure that nothing like that happens. There are certain things I would NEVER do for that reason.

I am sorry you found that. I am sure not all Brescians are that way but it is unfortunate that you ran into that.
they are more jealous in the south and not nice at all
