    Thank you so much for having me on this video, man! 😁 It was fun! And your editing is top notch! Excellent work!
    As you said, there are many subgenres to slice-of-life. Heck, the characters don't even have to be human to make it work. All you really need are great relatable characters, and simple conflict. 👍

    Unpopular opinion but i feel like cartoon slice of life is a lot more bombastic and exciting than anime slice of life.
    My Life as a Teenage Robot, Kick Buttowski, Juniper Lee, Jake Long, Megas XLR, Randy Cunningham, PPG, Rocket Power, Phineas and Ferb, Yin Yang Yo, Kim Possible, Totally Spies, etc. They have a feeling of excitement and appeal that i feel is very minimal in anime. Even if they are considered slice of life, they had some awesome action
    I myself have an idea for a slice of life story set in after the events of my other stories that leads to a more high-energy side of the genre.
    It follows the extraordinary lives of brother and sister robots, Chase and Tear-resa. Chase has a dream of living up to the expectations of his childhood heroes, but since this story is set in a world where every antagonist is dead, it makes it hard for him to live that bombastic life he saw his heroes live. Tear-resa on the other hand is upbeat and easygoing just wanting a normal life. That's really all i have for now.
    Speaking of those cartoons i mentioned earlier, how bout a video on making n episodic stories?

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT THOSE CARTOONS. I wasn't even thinking of them too much during the recording of this since i try to stay in the comic, manga realm. But I totally agree! I definitely should make a follow up video at some point with a cartoonist or something as a special guest to discuss that more. Episodic stories are definitely on my list for upcoming videos!

    6:40 it's interesting, like I know the difference between a genre and a subgenre, but I wonder in what cases certain genres take on that main and sub category. I guess if the series is set in a school, the main genre will be school, but then if the chapters/episodes actually focus less on school life and more on comedy or romance I suppose that would take the main role itself! I've always considered romance/comedy series to be equally romance and comedy but I wonder if there's a real way to determine which actually takes precedence. Also some genres are so so soooo broad, like adventure for example. I feel like if it was the main genre of a series it wouldn't actually do justice describing it, some cases I feel like the sub genre better describes the series than the main genre 🤣 Anyways, great video on a top tier genre, and it was nice getting to know JFMstudio! Looking forward to the next one Monitor 💪

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yesss, it definitely is an interesting topic. I try to think of genres as the general umbrella term and subgenres as the specific category. Like anything can be horror, but not every horror is a zombie film. Adventure is pretty broad. Something with a lot of world building can be considered adventure, something smaller scale like Percy Jackson also counts, but so can something like Lost where the characters are exploring an uninhabited island. Usually it is paired with comedy or action, probably to give it more personality since adventures just involve characters going out of their comfort zone on some journey. With Slice of Life, I think it is usually paired with subgenres too, slice of life comedy and slice of life school are VERY COMMON
      I'm not sure if there is a genre that doesn't have subgenres, so I'm also interested to know if someone can think of one lol

    • @peachenelle
      @peachenelle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MonitorComics Yess exactly, I think umbrella is the best way to see genres, and then sub genres are what make it stand out. Its funny though because you'd think the main genre would be the one that best describes it, quirks and all, not just a general term.... oh my god does general come from genre. I think I've just had a revelation.

    • @peachenelle
      @peachenelle ปีที่แล้ว

      @MonitorComics ok its french so I guess there's only correlation between the two words, but still 🤣 I'm interested in any one genre series too 🤔

    Thanks for the video! I've been trying to look into slice of life genre but can't find a single thing on the matter! About a few of my comic ideas feature a bit of slice of life areas, most notable is an isekai one where three teens are brought to a world of sweets and I wanted to have a general theme of them finding the joy and sweet points in life (as they all have a general rough time in their own lives in the real world) as they try to find a way home, but I don't watch too many slice of life animes or read a lot of manga in that genre. Exception of Komi Can't Communicate and Detective Conan. Most of my inspiration came from cartoon slice of life adventure stuff (Powerpuff Girls, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Totally Spies, Amphibia, The Owl House, etc.). So I don't really know how long the comics should take, how effectively to get the characters to grow in a steady pace that doesn't feel like I'm sprinting in every page, and etc. But this did help me in a little of what I should look into it. Thanks again!

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad to hear that! I plan to make a follow up video to this one relatively soon about the Moe subgenre, which is the branch off of Slice of Life Manga. It's why there's so many anime that feature a bunch of girls doing everyday things. I also plan to make another video specifically talking about slice of life cartoons because two other people have asked about it in the comments! Slice of Life cartoons like My Life As a Teenage Robot and Powerpuff girls are a lot more faster paced and adventure oriented than most Japanese slice of life stories, so it might be helpful to discuss the differences! Most slice of life anime finish after 12 episodes and 2 seasons, so they are relatively short. There ARE longer ones though like Lucky Star, Nichijou, Shin Chan etc that have a ton of episodes and chapters

      @@MonitorComics Naminé's name can be translated to "sound of the wave" in Japanese, since the character 音 (oto) can be pronounced as "ne". Alternatively, her name also can mean "born from the wave", because of the French "né" at the end of her name ("né" is the past participle of the verb "naître", which means "to be born").
      In Japanese, the word “Kodo” holds a double meaning. It can be translated as “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm. Indeed, the great taiko is thought to be reminiscent of a mother's heartbeat as felt from the womb, and babies are often lulled to sleep by its thunderous vibrations,the word can also mean "children of the drum".
      Hibiki means "Echo" in Japanese.
      In short her full name means The drumming child born from the echoing heartbeats of the waves or the child born to hear the drumming heartbeats of the echoing ocean waves.
      That is the name of my female lead,what do you think?

    Hey so I have a question. I plan on making a comic with comedy, action, and slice of life elements mixed into it. To put it very simply, the series is about a day in the life of martial arts students, showcasing them training, getting into wacky situations, and going on special missions ect. I think the idea sounds fun and gives me way more creativity bc theres no specific endgoal to the story. My question is this tho: What would make this kind of idea NOT work? Like theres going to be action but what if the reader gets bored of the slice of life moments?

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just say that the biggest hurdle would be making it not feel generic and stand out from other stories. Those types of genres are combined a lot, so it can easily feel repetitive. Other than though if you can execute it well, you shouldn't run into too many issues!

      I agree with both. Im at the point where Ive seen basically all the good ones. As a story teller, I enjoy the character arcs in slice of life. You can connect to a protagonist in a cathartic way to live vicariously through them in scenarios that could very well happen in real life. I think its strong point is in its relatability. For people barely getting into anime, it's the easiest to connect to making it a good window into manga as a medium.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! The easiest way to get started is to make a google doc or word document that you will use as your Master File. The first thing I usually do is brainstorm placeholder titles, write down the genre, and demographic
      Then I will make a section where I make a story outline. Here I write out the beginning, middle, and end in simple sentences. This should be for your OVERALL STORY
      Then I will make a section called Elevator Pitch, where I will think about two series that are similar to mine. Then I will make a section called Tagline where I will describe my story in a few sentences to sell it (think of the words on the back of a book)
      Then I will make a section dedicated to Character Bios, where you make notes of all of your characters
      Then I would make a section called Chapter Outline and plan by volume. Most manga volumes have 200 pages. Shonen manga chapter 1's tend to be around 60 pages, chapter 2's tend to be about 25 pages, and chapter 3 onward tend to be about 19 pages.
      From there I will think about the three chapter rule and make sure those first three chapters work well as an introduction and hook to the series. Here you can begin thinking about story arcs and where you want your story to go
      After your first three chapters are outlined, that leaves about 100 pages left to divide into chapters.
      Once that is done you can begin scripting your chapters, focusing on character dialogue and scene descriptions. Then move onto storyboarding, inking, and publishing! Hopefully that helps!

      YES! A lot of series that aren't in the slice of life genre have slice of life elements.
