4 people in my family have had gastric bypass. All of them gained it all back. Now, their modified stomachs rebounded, and they have to deal with the side effects. The surgery doesn't fix your brain.

My sister in law's sister had to reschedule her gastric bypass surgery three times because she'd show up to the surgery with a stomach full of Burger King.

my dad, my 2 aunts, and both my grandparents had gastric bypass. one of my aunts was the only one who completely slimmed down, but my dad's the only one who gained it all back. the reason you're supposed to go to therapy before being approved for gastric bypass is to fix your brain BEFORE you fix your stomach. i haven't bothered looking into it for myself because i know i couldn't stick with the dietary changes. i guess you could say i'm taking the radical self-acceptance route.

My brother had the surgery. Ended up in the hospital twice with bleeding ulcers requiring blood transfusions. I opted diet and exercise. I lost 205 lbs and have kept it off for 2 years so far. Unfortunately, my brother has gained some weight back. It really is a commitment to change how you think of food, exercise, and health. It is really hard. Just like any other addiction, you have to be aware of how you are reacting to everything around you that will trigger the emotional eating.

Fact! I work in surgery and have done bariatric (gastric bypass/sleeve) cases. We had a patient who had a sleeve done and 2 weeks post op he ate chili dogs and blew his stomach open, which almost killed him and put him in ICU. Moral of the story, if you don't already have the foundation of balancing your nutrition and staying active on the daily, surgery won't "fix" you.

I went to an endocrinologist. They diagnose me with a metabolic syndrome. I became diabetic due to this issue. Unfortunately my insurance cancelled my policy right before pre op. Now I’m fighting to repeal the cancellation since the surgery is medically necessary. Diabetic, pcos, and genetically exposed due to genetics. I’ll lose the weight, gain it back, lose it, gain it. It’s a vicious cycle 😢

@@arnavmekala4578 I totally agree. It should be illegal for them to do this. I want my monies back since for 6 years of payments.. what is the point? I tell my hubs every other week or so how I want us to leave this country because it doesn’t even feel like home anymore :( it’s disappointing knowing we all pay so much into the system and to get barely even crumbs back in return.

That's why I love working with them! Whenever I'm starting to fall into "it is what it is" they pull me right back to "why?" and "maybe it doesn't have to be like this!". They test boundaries, they question, they demand explanations. I teach them to do it safely and with kindness, they, in turn, remind me to step back, take in the full picture with a fresh eye, and then make a decision. It is overwhelming, and you can feel defeated at times, but I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

too young to think so drastically, losing or gaining weight isn't necesserely the key for happiness, there is always gonna be something off about oneself that people will point out and you do need to accept that fact first. otherwise it isn't much different that those falling down the rabbit hole of plastic surgery and not knowing how to stop.
i have a friend that is overweight and kept complaiining how the NHS wouldn't do for free liposuction or that surgery to remove excess skin and even gastic bypass surgery
they do it only if they are sure the patient will be mentally strong enough to keep up with the regime imposed and won't fall back into it etc.
in her case she is a teen, still growing, chances of complications later on are actualy way higher than someone who is completely grown and that is an important factor in my opinion

It's still a constant fight and at age 69 it always will be. But I have no regrets about the surgery I had . A lot of Drs won't even do the bypasses anymore . Thank Goodness for the sleeve

Since she needs her mom to sign off on the surgery, I can only assume she's a minor, therefore under 18 in the US. For a lot of people, puberty doesn't end at 18, and puberty makes for a LOT of changes. I figure she's better off waiting until 21, once her body is more stable in its growth, and then seek out medical options. There are also non-surgical options for losing weight - some medications suppress appetite, others help with insulin resistance in people who aren't diabetic (though her mother says their numbers are fine, so one could probably rule out insulin resistance in her case), etc. Rule things out in a non-surgical way first. Then there are less invasive, less permanent surgeries, like the gastric band.
Point is, the character is too young and there are too many variables to explore and rule out before going for something invasive and permanent.

being fat is NOT okay, people needs to come back to planet earth and stick with scientific facts rather than living in their own little safe space. Surgery might not fix all your problem but putting yourself at risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and more just because it's politically correct to say will certainly cost you more in the long run than hurt feeling and pride
