Not really. I work for one. We have 3110 houses and we follow all HOA laws. Our Board of Directors are all volunteers and do not take any money. This particular HOA should be investigated. I love where I work and have been there for 28 years
No. HOAs keep unremarkable deviants like you from parking your car on your lawn and painting your house neon orange. Which you would undoubtedly do, and then stupidly invoke your “rights” (even though you can’t actually define “rights” without Google.)
@@PieceIT And that's because the local government is happy to not have to deal with/pay for things within HOAs. It reduces their obligations and saves money so they often incentivize or require new subdivisions to be under an HOA. This is flat wrong.
I agree but, unfortunately, that isn’t always possible. When we bought, HOAs weren’t even on my radar, and the house we loved happened to make a big deal that it WAS NOT in an HOA. Before we settled, I was asking about HOAs, and WHOA! so glad we bought in a high end neighborhood that is established, and pretty much pre dates HOAs. Whew!
I was in the Navy for 21 years and never once heard the term “jelly butt buddy”….this is probably one of those guys that got medically discharged in 2 months but still calls himself a veteran…he’s taking the entire year’s HOA dues from 5-7 families and paying it to himself for gas???
I was on the board for our little subdivision of 63 houses for several years. Like this one. All we had was a park with a gazebo. We added a small shed but it was just a little garden shed and we use it to keep a barbecue and tables in that we use for summer events. Our dues run a little over $200. A year. That pays for maintenance and of the park, lighting and insurance. Every penny is accounted for and all the documents went online for anybody to look at. We also tried to stay pretty chill as far as enforcement. Sometimes something comes up that you have to deal with, but if you're literally out there with a ruler measuring people's lawns, you're not doing anyone any favors.
The sad part is that they will probably use HOA money to pay lawyers to help cover their corrupt behavior. Hopefully they make recordings of this news article and distribute it to all the homeowners. Then get that weasel out of office and put the plaque in the shed.
All HOAs, especially in Nevada, need to be fully audited and monitored by both a State and independent board entity. I have seen HOA leaders suddenly come upon some huge and oddly convenient windfalls. Especially since the HOA rates have been shooting up in Las Vegas. There is a ton of corruption going on, and no actual accountability.
Apparently Real Estate Division has a walk in. They don’t do Jack. HUD you can try but they question you more than address the issue it feels. Vistana run by First Service is another with a lot of flags. Read my post.
Shady HOAs hire the shadiest parking enforcement companies too - they're still trying to tow people for expired registration despite the NV law changing last year to explicitly say that's not allowed
Yes. I pay less than than for my HOA and we have a swimming pool and a recreation building available for use. Our minutes can be attended in person or with zoom.
Having previously rented a house in an HOA neighborhood, I’m so glad I bought a house out in the country that I could paint rainbow colors if I wanted to. Imagine buying a house, being lucky enough to fully pay it off, and then having to, on top of paying property taxes, pay a bunch of Karens FOREVER to tell you that your grass is too long, you’re not allowed to put up that fence, etc. And then they steal a bunch of money from you and talk shit about you in their secret board meetings. No thank you.
$105 a month x 169 homes is nearly $213,000 a year in dues, I would definitely like to know how that money was being spent if I was one of the homeowners paying over $1,200 a year.
Shame on NRED. These homeowners need help. The kind of help that NRED is supposed to exist to provide. And yet, NRED says, the problem is an internal one with the HOA? That is exactly the problem. The homeowners can't get through the "internal" workings of their HOA. This is not only a problem for Four Winds. It's a problem for everyone who owns a home in Common Interest Community in Nevada.
How are these acts not fraud or at least contrary to code, rules and regulations? Did the board file 1099's to the IRS & to the recipient... Did he report those reimbursements on his tax returns?
Keep at it! This kind of arrogant corruption is wildly epidemic. All over the country. Someone has to speak up. Thanks for doing the single most important thing a news organization can do : support consumers who have no one else speaking up for them.
When a certain Board member learned our bid outbid her friend’s bid for our home, I started receiving (harassing) non-compliance letters about my lawn’s overgrowth. Mind you, the lawn was/is mowed weekly, is in pristine condition, dark green and weed-free. I invested hours in leveling the soil and regularly weed-feed and fertilize to maintain a club-like course appearance. This lasted 3 yrs and only stopped because I retained a real estate lawyer.
Time to report this to the IRS. He is required to report this on his taxes each year. Yeah, there's a form to report reimbursements for business expenses.
Great piece done by this station. Hope the guy gets on the board and records every minute of the meetings. This guy being a corrections officer fears no one. For all the problems Florida HOA's have state law has improved accountability. The problem with this HOA is that the monthly dues are quiet small and the rest of the residents don't care about their money.
HOA stands for HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION but if you notice most HOAs have NO homeowners on the board only paid nazis whose primary job is to raise $$ from fines. Lots of HOAs are run by big HOA corporations who own HOAs all over your area. Its a business. !
The air conditioned, security camera covered shed concerns me. I can think of several illegal possibilities that are going on in there and I hope I am wrong, but that needs to be checked sooner rather than later.
I'll be damned if I own a home and have others telling me what I can and can't do with my property...and I have to PAY them for it. All HOAs are nothing but a bunch of bullies.
Pissed off Karen's who failed to make the high school cheerleading squad and now want to take out their frustrations on anyone they let get away with it.
A MEMBER vote of no confidence which a clear majority of home owners, can be made at a board meeting, thus new elected officials can be seated on the house board.
I was stunned when they said the HOA fee was $105/month. Over here in SW PA, we've got HOA fees that are over $600/month -- for not much benefit. Buying in a place without and HOA is becoming increasingly difficult because they're tearing down old neighborhoods to put in new "developments". And every one has an HOA now. Unless you can buy an older house - and afford to fix it up - you're stuck with an HOA.
I could never live in such a crowded and compact neighborhood and certainly not for any amount of monthly payments. I don't care if the house is super nice and on two acres; I will never submit to a homeowners association.
I see a lot of comments saying how bad HOA is, etc., but I wonder if these same people realize that HOA's are just small scale governments. HOA fees are like taxes. It's hard enough to keep tiny governments like HOA's in check. Imagine keeping a big government in check. If you're saying HOA is bad, but aren't against government power in general, well, you aren't seeing the big picture.
My home is under a HOA (thank God ours isn’t overbearing) and we don’t pay anywhere NEAR what the folks in the video pay for dues and yet we have a park, tennis court, a basketball court, and a pool. We also have events in our subdivision throughout the year. We pay a chunk at the beginning of the year but if broken down to monthly payments it would be like paying in the upper $30s/lower $40s each month. The folks in the video are getting ripped all the way off.
they should start a ballot initiative to make home owners asscociations accountable to the home owners or be dissolved. you would have to give me a home in one them to live there and I would sell it as soon as possible.
No way I'm ever going to live in an HOA. I don't need adult children running around getting in my business or paying them for the privilege of telling me what I can or cannot do with my property.
Common areas usually include streets, lighting, utility connections, insurance, entry gates and signage/landscaping, and sidewalks as well as any clubhouse, park, swimming pool, etc.
14k miles each year charged in the thousands to drive to HOA? Where did $80k go? What gives them the right to charge what they want what is it to pay for? No pool no amenities?
We have the same problem with our HOA, contacted channel 13, did not want to deal with us. A guy called and was actually pretty rude, sent us to the office of ombudsman.
HOA could do that because the owners were passive lazy and detached from their HOA's meetings. They should have smelled a fish long time ago, hired lawyers and start building a case with track records. Now it is late and they are old shriveling and robbed alive. Having 13 years of Directorship at my condo we had monthly meetings with agenda, notes of meetings, all expenses needed 3 signatures to every cheques we wrote, records were kept open to all and reserve funds were up to par with necessities of repairing doors windows etc. No debt either. Ship shape HOA. Our worst enemy was owners'inertia.
The residents need to get ahold of that $1,000 self congratulatory metal plaque and use it to force the board president to decide if he'd rather go to the hospital or the jail.
If you think the state cares about HOA fees...you are mistaken. I would get a bunch of homeowners and go look in the garage. If it's listed as community property...cops will say it's a civil matter. If it did go to court your defense team could ask for evidence of value. You might get a fine but they would have to turn over the books and they don't want to do that
If you or anyone in your community suspects that someone in the HOA is stealing than you ought to follow up on the suspicion it's more than likely someone in the HOA is definitely stealing.
It’s 2500 miles straight across the country from Las Vegas to Virginia he would’ve had to drive there and back 3 times! $212,940 for a picnic area and no BBQ Grills
That crooked HOA president & crooked HOA board bought a nice motorhome for just them to share , on the HOA’s money, and they’re hiding it in that garage/storage unit.
This board expects them to pay $100.00 per square foot to paint the shed? It may be a small thing but it sure is costing alot! Never met an HOA I was happy to be a part of.
HOAs are either run by petty tyrants who own homes or by petty bureaucrats hired by the association to manage things. Either way, they're only interested in ramping up the fees and finding ways to embezzle. Associations around Vegas regularly charge more than twice as much what this guy pays - when I was shopping, I saw HOA fees as high as $350 a month for a 1,100 sq. ft. condo with no landscaping to speak of (maze of sidewalks and river rock) and the most microscopic pool you've ever seen. My HOA spends $30,000 a year on a "reserve" fund that's balance doesn't change year to year.
On one hand, you knew what you were buying into. Aka shutting out the riff raff..; on the other hand, this sheds light on these roaches. Why do they exist.
ALL HOAs should be made illegal
Not really. I work for one. We have 3110 houses and we follow all HOA laws. Our Board of Directors are all volunteers and do not take any money. This particular HOA should be investigated. I love where I work and have been there for 28 years
Condos?
Says the dog owners.
No. HOAs keep unremarkable deviants like you from parking your car on your lawn and painting your house neon orange. Which you would undoubtedly do, and then stupidly invoke your “rights” (even though you can’t actually define “rights” without Google.)
Agreed
I would live in a cardboard box before I would buy a home with an HOA!!!!!!
Not many properties around here without one.
You probably do if you aren’t in an hoa, they’re everywhere now. Just another way to scam money out of people
@@PieceIT And that's because the local government is happy to not have to deal with/pay for things within HOAs. It reduces their obligations and saves money so they often incentivize or require new subdivisions to be under an HOA. This is flat wrong.

Can you imagine homeless starting a HOA. Rules on cardboard boxes and parking shopinh carts....

Put that plaque as the entry mat to the park's latrine.
What a bunch of losers cheating and scamming their neighbors
That board President is having his HOA pay for all his gas usage. Since there's no accountability he is taking advantage.
Yup

They literally have nothing but a Pavillion. No pool, playground, walking path, club house. Their HOA needs to be $10 a month.
Yes. I pay less than than for my HOA and we have a swimming pool and a recreation building available for use. Our minutes can be attended in person or with zoom.
I could watch days of these. HOA’s are so dirty
THEY ARE EXTORTIONISTS ON A MALIGNANT POWER TRIP.
A license to steal
Why are HOAs allowed? I will never ever buy a house that is under an hoa, a karens dream...
good ones PREVENT Karen bahvior

This was absolutely ridiculous! There needs to be criminal investigations and charges brought.
IRS needs to audit the mileage deductions because they look like a scam.

Our Hoa said if we have an audit the fees will go up to cover the costs
Scare tactics
Toddler mentality from these HOA board members.
Keep at it! This kind of arrogant corruption is wildly epidemic. All over the country. Someone has to speak up. Thanks for doing the single most important thing a news organization can do : support consumers who have no one else speaking up for them.
Donate the park to the city, get rid of the HOA and you won't need the shed. And for the future don't ever, ever buy a home in an HOA.
When a certain Board member learned our bid outbid her friend’s bid for our home, I started receiving (harassing) non-compliance letters about my lawn’s overgrowth. Just in the US there are so many HOA with so much power.
Time to report this to the IRS. He is required to report this on his taxes each year. Yeah, there's a form to report reimbursements for business expenses.
My aunt was an HOA manager in California and said that this was the best side job she had ever had!
she was probably a good manager and not a karen ripping people off
The Nevada Department that oversees HOAs is useless. As soon as the HOA's attorney gets involved, they will side with the HOA every time.
Apt name... four winds... because that is exactly where your money is going...
LOL! 🤣
Now that is what *should* be put on that stupid plaque at their community park. 🥸👍🏼

One of the routes to hell: being on an HOA board.
Class action lawsuit if allegations proven true?
A MEMBER vote of no confidence which a clear majority of home owners, can be made at a board meeting, thus new elected officials can be seated on the house board.
Shame on that HOA president and the entire board. It’s sad but it’s the same where we live.
If an HOA entered my home it would be the last time they broke & entered.
This has to stop.
I won't even visit friends in HOA housing.
Sounds like our HOA management co, Onyx Realty, pretty much worthless and you can't get them to give info to you about anything.

Because it is a single homes Neiborhood that the homeowners are responsible to pay their maintenance home costs.
If you want to get rich quickly, become an HOA President.
I could never live in such a crowded and compact neighborhood and certainly not for any amount of monthly payments. I don't care if the house is super nice and on two acres; I will never submit to a homeowners association.
I learned about the evils of HOAs in the 1990s. Why people are still paying HOAs is beyond me.
Never ever buy in a HOA!
Would hiring a private detective be helpful?
State to homeowners: "We aren't going to investigate because the board should investigate itself." WOW
Over 200k a year in HOA dues. I guess they gotta spend it somehow.
I see a lot of comments saying how bad HOA is, etc., but I wonder if these same people realize that HOA's are just small scale governments.
HOA fees are like taxes. It's hard enough to keep tiny governments like HOA's in check. Imagine keeping a big government in check.

Are there comments on here against HOAs, but support government power in general? I'm pretty sure you can be against both.
Your comment is nonsense
The board is probably keeping a drug lab in their shed.
That executive session was a violation of Brown Act. Executive/private sessions are limited in scope (employment etc).
My home is under a HOA (thank God ours isn’t overbearing) and we don’t pay anywhere NEAR what the folks in the video pay for dues and yet we have a park, tennis court, a basketball court, and a pool. they should start a ballot initiative to make home owners asscociations accountable to the home owners or be dissolved. you would have to give me a home in one them to live there and I would sell it as soon as possible.
This board should be in jail. It's obvious that they are all corrupt and stealing money.
Give a person or group power and authority over others and the right to take money from them, and you will have created a monster, every time.
We need tax rebates to replace HOAs
That's why STATE INCOME TAXES ARE NEEDED IN THIS DUMB STATE. YOU PEOPLE ARE SO DUMB!!!
You also have corporations buying up mobile home parks. Jacking up the rent. Not doing repairs. Forcing familes out.
HOA. own your house . you only pay mortgage. jajajajajaja
Clear case of organized crime. Get the state attorney general involved.
Does appear a lawsuit is required.
Agree HOA should be outlawed!
HOA BOSSSES LIVING LIKE KINGS.. Why complain they keeping propert valuez up
Criminal activity in the little tiny HOA board ?
14k miles each year charged in the thousands to drive to HOA? Where did $80k go? What gives them the right to charge what they want what is it to pay for? No pool no amenities?
How are the roads maintained? Is trash and internet paid separately or from the dues?
Is there still a RFP for that paint job? I will apply.
That is just a tad over $200K a year in dues. Maintenance on that park … might be $400 a month.
The note said mileage AND supplies
You don't need an hoa if the city is enforcing its ordinances. I would NEVER buy and hoa property.
The HOA president needs to be investigated and either fined or jailed for money mis management
We have the same problem with our HOA, contacted channel 13, did not want to deal with us. A guy called and was actually pretty rude, sent us to the office of ombudsman.

What the government does to your money every day of the year!
They made their home, now live in it!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The problem with State investigating you must solve the case for them.
The residents need to get ahold of that $1,000 self congratulatory metal plaque and use it to force the board president to decide if he'd rather go to the hospital or the jail.
Parts... pieces parts (him looking confused as hell) 💀 😂5:23
When no one double checks and just pays , ....
What a bunch of thieves !
If you think the state cares about HOA fees...you are mistaken. I would get a bunch of homeowners and go look in the garage. If it's listed as community property...cops will say it's a civil matter. HOA, no thanks! I will never buy a house in a subdivision that has hoa!
It’s 2500 miles straight across the country from Las Vegas to Virginia he would’ve had to drive there and back 3 times! $212,940 for a picnic area and no BBQ Grills
He’s renting out that shed to someone
That crooked HOA president & crooked HOA board bought a nice motorhome for just them to share , on the HOA’s money, and they’re hiding it in that garage/storage unit.
This is a national problem. HOA’s are out of control and steal from hard working homeowners.
This board expects them to pay $100.00 per square foot to paint the shed? It may be a small thing but it sure is costing alot! Never met an HOA I was happy to be a part of.
Crooks.
WHO'S THE FORMER CORRECTIONS OFFICER, HE KNOWS ABOUT SMUGGLING DRUGS AND CELL PHONES INTO THE JAIL SYSTEM TO MAKE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS
The shed...what is in that shed????
NEVER buy in an HOA.
Time to close them down.
HOAs are either run by petty tyrants who own homes or by petty bureaucrats hired by the association to manage things.
What does it take you to reach you?
It’s called money….greed greed…..
On one hand, you knew what you were buying into. Aka shutting out the riff raff..; on the other hand, this sheds light on these roaches.
Why do they exist.
My HOA did nothing to shut off the riff raff, it has been going on for over 2 years and nothing has been done.
