Look it up. Over time we have converted it to mean something else; however, Schubert’s original version is certainly secular. The Beatles weren’t the first to play on such matters.

There are many versions of the Ave Maria, but this is my favourite. Bravo et merci beaucoup! ❤
The other version of Ave Maria is by Bach/Gounod, which my father also used to sing. Both are beautiful 🙏🙏

There is an Original Ave Maria but it is in a Gregorian Chant format the Standard of the Roman Church.

One interesting thing about the history of this song. It was originally written to a German translation of Walter Scott's poem 'The Lady of the Lake'. The original title of the song is 'Ellens Gesang III (Hymn an die Jungfrau)', referring to the Virgin Mary. Indeed, the original English language text is a prayer to Mary, but not the regular 'Ave Maria' text with which it is associated these days. It is unknown who first transcribed the Ave Maria text to Schubert's melody, as far as I know.

When my Mother passed away the only thing she asked is that we would have a Tenor solo sing Ave Maria at her funeral, she was a huge fan of Pavarotti. Anytime I hear this song now I break down in tears because I feel that it is my Mother telling me she is still watching over me and guiding me through my journey in life. It was 13 years ago now that she died and today is the first time I seen this I am glad I clicked on it because my Mother is checking in with me again.

I thought I was the only one who saw that in her eyes. But to be perfectly honest, that look could be "she's good and I wish I had a voice like that" rather than "I wish it was me and not her in the limelight". Either way, that first girl was clearly uncomfortable.
