    As a Finn I think it's great that there are teachers from other countries coming into the Finnish education system. Finnish is such a unique language, that you really can't get by on the world stage with just Finnish, which is why English teaching is so highly regarded here. Also, the Finnish schooling system, although successful and progressive, can sometimes gloss over some of the very basic things that make school more enjoyable.
    For example my English teacher in college was a British guy, and he was everyone's favourite teacher. Unlike the Finns, he paid attention to things like what sort of weather it was outside, so if it was a warm and sunny day, he'd hold the class outside on the school grounds. His reasoning for this being "Finland gets so few days of warmth and sunlight per year that you need to enjoy them when you get them". And he liked to offer his students a cup of tea or coffee at the start of the lesson. He also often showed clips of English talk shows and then had us repeat what the people in the clip said to better our understanding of the spoken language and also to help us get better at pronouncing English. Small things, but enough to make school not feel as much like school and instead feel like something you looked forward to.
    I'm not saying the Finnish teachers weren't great as well, but they were simply used to the way things are done in Finland that they rarely switched things up.
    So, If there are any teachers reading the comments hoping to some day teach in Finland, do give it a shot. The integration of fresh perspectives and new ideas are what's keeping the Finnish school system at the top. :)

    I'm so excited to see your back! I came across your older videos back in December after I had returned to Texas from my first trip to Finland. It's was great to find your videos at that time because I was in mourning from missing Finland soooo much! It was so much fun watching your videos and comparing my experiences to the ones you had. I can't wait to go back. I left Finland thinking I was the utmost fan of that country and then I came across your videos. It was refreshing to hear someone else from Texas share their passion for Finland. Just today, I was online ordering a Marimekko print comforter and then I logged onto TH-cam to find that you had returned. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos! Looking forward to more!

    Most teachers balance authority and approachability really well! For example allowing two friends sit beside each other and then separating them if they behave badly. I remember feeling like we had mutual agreements with the teachers, and situations could be discussed. They would hold themselves responsible if they broke the rules themselves. This is a nice balance that I did not see in Germany and England that much.

    Nice video Tyler! It was really interesting to hear how it all started! I also like alot that it's easy to interact between students and teachers or even with principals at schools. There is not a hierarchy in the way that some cultures have and teachers are called by their first name ect. That Kalevala really amazed me. It's difficult book to read even for us native Finnish because its' old style of language. I thought you had an English version of it but it was really cool to see you had the original one! The qualifications were in some way what I experienced in Canada. There, I had to have majored as an undergraduate in 1 teachable subject for the elementary program or 2 majors for the high school teaching program. I also quit work for a year to volunteer to work in two schools. Even with that, I did not get into any programs in Ontario. At the time, they had a meeting for rejected applicants to discuss their process. We were told that basically they were looking for males, with a master's degree in science! (this was in the early 90s). I did get accepted to the 2 year program at the University off British Columbia. But, after almost 10 years off teaching and 6 years of university to become a teacher, I was not credited for all my experience or degrees in the USA. I think every country has hoops you have to jump through. I am glad you had this experience of working in Finland! Fantastic.

      @twalton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! That's awesome that you want to stay in Finland. Definitely look into applying to the university for English, and start taking English courses through Open University if you can. Also, look up the STEP programme and see if it interests you. And try to talk to every teacher/principal that you can! If they know you're a native speaker with a passion for teaching, they will think of you when they need a substitute. Substitute teaching is usually how young teachers get their foot in the door for a few years (often while completing their studies) before they get hired full-time. Best of luck to you!

      It is not rare to have two masters here in Finland. Also I assume it would be possible to study faster or do part time work while studying.
      I would say that every yläkoulu would be happy to have you as their teacher if you are also mental health professional. Also there are hospital schools, special education classes, and introductory classes for refugee kids where your skills are more than needed.

      Those are really good qualifications! That's way more than I had when I started out in Finland so you're off to a good start. You will still have to go through the Finnish process of getting your qualifications recognized in Finland (through the Finnish National Agency for Education), and I imagine you will still need to do at least the one year of teacher education studies (STEP) to receive your teaching certificate and qualify as a permanent teacher. (You can still be hired as a temporary teacher on shorter term contracts without this certificate which is what I did before STEP.) There's no way to know in advance, so if you really want to teach in Finland, start applying!

It wasn't until I went to college that I started learning foreign languages. I started with Latin since I was majoring in literature, and quickly added French my second year. I was pretty lucky as an English teacher since my students were all quite advanced at the bilingual school so I could teach a variety of lessons. The way I taught was very different from what I grew up with as I remember hating English class. No, I'm back in Texas for the moment. I'd love to return to Finland, but it really all depends on where I'm able to find work.

    Puhuuko kukaan sinulle suomea ?

      Yes, it's very difficult to learn Finnish for that reason and not just because the language is so distant from my native tongue. Finnish people will readily switch to English for me, which makes life a lot easier but also makes learning Finnish more difficult. I did take Finnish classes and I've continued to learn Finnish on my own using Memrise (now called Decks), but I'm still at a very basic level. I could understand maybe half of what you wrote, for example, before turning to Google Translate haha.

      Have you checked libraries for kielikahvila? They have had language meetings at least in Pasila. Also pohjoismainen kirjasto in Kaisaniemi is having meetings to practise all (or one) Nordic languages.

    Being Caucasian and American has clearly made it easier for you to get a job as a teacher in Finland. It would be infinitely harder for a non Caucasian, with your exact qualifications to get that same teaching job. FACT.
    Finland is full of Africans with Doctorates and Master's degrees washing dishes and cleaning offices! Sad, but very, very true!!!
