The first time I heard Bach on mandolin was when Mike Marshall recorded this prelude on the Duo album with Darol Anger (early 1980s.) That was the moment I realized just how versatile the mandolin can be. It is beautifully performed here. Thank you for sharing.

Yes. And no. What is versatile is the music of JSB. The art of the fugue can be played with cocacola cans and it will still sound excellent.

I have heard that recording too! Mike Marshall is incredible. Mandolin really can be very versatile. You can play so many different styles on it!

Thank you so much! I love this piece too. It was actually the reason I started learning Solo Bach!

@@mandolinprincess3382 I bought the mandolin sheet music/tab for this a long time ago but only learned a few bars. The piece of music blows my mind, that Bach composed this for a violin, A universe of notes on 4 strings.

Stairwells should then be used to play Bach much more often!

Lovely. What a fine musician you are.
Some musicians would practice in the stairwell of the dorms at college. The resulting tone would reverberate so much, and without having to play loudly..

Thank you! I actually love to play in stairwells for that same reason. The way the acoustics sound are different from anything else, and make it so full.

Very nice! I studied classical mandolin with Chris Acquavella for many years. Which mandolin are you playing? And are you aware of the San Diego Classical Mandolin Camp - a full week this summer in August?

Thank you! The instrument in this video is a Lucia made by Carlo Mazzaccara. Thank you also for the tip about the San Diego opportunity. :)

Fantastic! I am really curious to hear how you think this mandolin von Mr. Mazzaccara compares with the Kerman style mandolin you received from him. From the recording this one sounds clearer in tone than the Kerman and seems to have more sustain. I am thinking which model to get and would be grateful to hear a bit of your experience. Best regards John

      Hi John,
Thank you for your question! It honestly depends the type of sound you are wanting from the mandolin. Both instruments are fantastic, but each one has different qualities. The Lucia bowlback has a lighter, sweeter sound that sustains itself well. The double-top Kerman style is more of a richer tone, although it can be very sweet as well. The volume of the double-top is definitely louder as it projects more due to its build. The necks of both instruments are fairly identical. The double-top often uses heavier strings than the Lucia, which creates slightly more resistance, but other than that, both are easy to play on. Out of both instruments, I personally prefer the Kerman-style double-top. I use a slightly different right hand technique with it due to its louder volume that uses less pick and less effort, allowing me to play faster more easily. In light of all this, I recommend either of the instruments.

Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated. I guess "loudness" is a little subjective. Mr Mazzaccara seems to think that his Lucia model is a tiny bit louder. I have also been listening to some recordings of the german seiffert models. They seem to have a very round sound. I think the kerman model has a wider fretboard. Do you find that helpful? Kind regards, John
