Phyllis Thaxter does an excellent job of portraying an alcoholic and how they try to fight off the desire to drink but their perception of reality becomes so skewed and they go haywire and fall back into drinking. Excellent depiction of a troubled woman who met her match in a man who was also an alcoholic. Fatal mistake.
Airdate April 22nd, 1956. Part 2. Hitch had pressure to redo his original light outro. So he said, "Ladies and gentlemen, may I just for this once depart from our customary epilogue. Tonight we have brought you a drama based on one of Adela Rogers St. Johns' most powerful stories, with the hope that somewhere, somehow, it will help someone."
Phyllis Thaxter died at 92 years old in 2012 and played Martha Kent in Superman (1978). Always a favorite. Born in 1919, I can only imagine the changes she must have seen in technology and society and people. Like George Burns said, “I have no friends, they all died.” I hope she lived a happy life.
Jeff was really nice - how hard it would be to love someone so insecure. And he accepted her alcoholism but i she went overboard, killed the man who loved her unconditionally. See it today all the time
If only she hadn't listened to the brother, had just walked away. She could have had a good life with someone who loved her and would have supported her recovery. Phyllis Thaxter plays this fabulously. Very sad but very moving episode.
@@BeverlyM52 Glad to see someone else is wondering this too, not only me. She is very insecure and messed up, but i dont think the killer was her. She couldnt even catch anything in her hand anymore - and she couldnt stand on her feet.
Phyliss Thaxter was my favorite Alfred Hitchcock actress she played very believable characters in the episodes I saw her in and also Twilight Zone and very pretty
@RUFUS T. FIREFLY Thank You!! 2nd.entry: Thanx again for the info. It was a good short-take, but it helps to put the whole story together. I only wish that 'Hitchcock' had made this one complete episode.
When getting drunk, some people just become a sedated version of themselves, while others can take on a whole different extroverted or obnoxious character.
it doesn't show it here, but just before she lets him in, he calls her name from outside her apartment and knocks on the door, 3 sets of 6 knocks each.
4:50 🤣 "I'm her kid brother. I drink."..."Would you like to drink with me?"...LOL it's crazy how much booze ppl guzzle in these old TV shows and radio dramas. It's just funny as hell in one way but kinda sad in a way too I suppose. Just guzzling liquor and chain smoking cigarettes. Ubiquitously in all the American shows from this era.
Without a doubt, Phyllis Thaxter was truly one of the great American actresses and highly underrated and under utilized in her two studios. Though she was a leading player at both MGM and Warner Bros, she was always being given the same types of parts though she proved herself time and time again in the complex and dramatic noir roles given the opportunity. Chances are , she might have been up for many of the same roles that were given to the likes of Audrey Totter and also Myrna Loy. In her later roles on television both in these Alfred Hitchcock dramas and in the Twilight Zone she reminds me A LOT of Myrna Loy.
I guess that's what they call an angry drunk. The nurse tells her she killed a man, the first thing she does, is punch the nurse!! Probably wants a higher score.
It made absolutely no sense for her to start drinking over what the woman said about her rather than just being joyful about what her soon to be fiancé said. Just crazy.
Exactly, the drunk brother only gave her good news. He not only proved her suspicion about the woman to be correct, he also told her that her boyfriend was crazy about her. She should have been happy, not mad.
He wasn’t being faithful to her. He immediately abandoned her at the party & then hooked up w/ her rival. It’s tragic that she didn’t just dump the two-timing jerk on the spot and walk out, because he definitely would’ve had affairs on her. He wasn’t noble.
The best part of this episode is Hitch's closing comments...but you won't get to see it on this channel, because the poster's channel name is too important.

Phyllis Thaxter.
OMG.. Fighting for that bottle. An award winning, amazing presentation!
Being wasted can go both ways. Loved the acting all around. Especially that short scene at the jukebox.
What an episode. Great acting. She captured many of the mannerisms.

I just saw this episode. This was the darkest episode from the first season yet. 😢
That was messed up. Pure Hitchcock.
That was one the scariest Hitchcock episodes I've seen.
Phyllis Thaxter kills it literally....again!!!!
I've rewatched this episode so many times. Acting was too perfect 💯!!
GORGEOUS dress
How many strands of pearls does she own lol 😂

Damn, that was dark.
Very stupid of him to bring that woman with him to look for her. He knew that would agitate her.
He brought her there because the guy was her brother. Did you not watch the clip?
@@jamielthashepherd6870 just wymxn finding any reason to blame the man.
Brings back a lot of painful memories!
Same.
That is exactly why I don't hang around drunk folks.
Yep
If this is what drunken people are then I might as well not drink for as long as I live
So much better than d shows of today
Great acting!

ALL OUT Wildlife Control, LLC if if were a 5th, she’d already be drunk.

7:23 , “Leave it” , “You had enough”
8:03 , “Chug-a-lug”
😂🤣🤣💀💀💀💀 She’s outstanding and played this part.
Ms. Thaxter never fails!
Wow best ending ever
Thx for uploading
My goodness this woman is so needy....
Brilliant! Television with that kind of story and ending is extinct.
Every alcoholic should watch this clip. If this doesn't make them stop drinking, nothing will! By the way, this is one of the many BEST of Hitchcock!
I'm a alcoholic
@@jessicagomez8775 I'm sorry to hear that. Do you want to stop drinking, or have you already? I stopped drinking 30 years ago.
Me too! Hope you're well.

Apparently, neither did he.

Ms Thaxter lived to be 92 and had a daughter, Skye Aubrey who also acted. A familiar face on tv for years. She reminded me of Theresa Wright.
I see the resemblance between Ms Thaxter and Miss Jean Stapleton
Heartbreaking 💔
great show--thanks for the HD ! sweet ~*

Where is the rest of the movie? Why only put part of it on?

If you have a drinking problem--quit hard alcohol and drink beer or wine, Or drink moderately, Or quit.
I think quitting is the only option for ppl with any alcohol problems.
Lucky lady, she had a second pearl necklace
Best show
She needed to level up.....so she leveled him instead. You'll never meet a pretentious drunk..
Knowing how she feels, he still brings her "rival" to the bar with him. 😒
He would’ve had an affair w/ her and his fiancee knew.
To come and take her home. Maybe she was worried about her too.

Great episode. Hitchcock's epilogue departed from his usual sardonic comments to provide a literary reference to this cautionary tale 😬
Good acting
Whoa, she killed him in her drunken state.
But this is drama❣❣ superb acting
WOW SHE PUT AN EXTRA TWIST ON THAT OLD SAYING,"A DRUNK AIN'T

Why the hell did she let that creepy woman after her potential hubs run her off to the bar like that? 🙄
Outstanding acting
Sign of the times. Everyone at the party is white and the maid is black
Upset because her opposition called her a “drunk” so she proves her right by getting hammered? Boy I wish all my competition in life made it so easy!

Yes, you're right about Hitchcock closing comment--He said "If this episode can help someone, somewhere, then we have done good."
Sometimes I think Alfred's foreward and epilogue are the best part of the show ✌
Wow
Phyllis Thaxter is absolutely terrific.
So many of these women are so weak looking for a man for their self esteem. Lol, so melodramatic 😁 love it 😊
💔😲😱 ~Prohibition was predicated on the hopes of preventing such incidents from occuring; as alcohol PROFF was highly unregulated...
Greatest anti-drinking episode ever. That woman was drunker than Jeff Hanneman.
She definitely played a KAREN 😅
Very sad unfortunate ending
