    Hi Katie, it is very sad but there is something that nobody mentioned: houses in islands and close to the sea need to be build different, traditional foundation doesn't allow the water to go through, so the best way is on columns/piers 8' or 10' high

    • @FixItYerself
      @FixItYerself 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be too sensible for the idiots that build houses in the middle of the sea

      State needs to require different building codes for homes along beach. The home that made it through Mexico Beach hurricane was built right.

    Sanibel will "come back" when the settlers leave. How many punches does Mother Nature need to land before people get the message? I live in Fort Myers, BTW. Thirty years ago, Sanibel and Captiva were quiet and lovely with easily accessible beaches everywhere. Not so much in the last several years. They came, they saw, they built, they got blown away.

      "Natural" will b the judge. Islands and deserts will b what they always were from the start. Everything on these islands and deserts r artificial (manmade). CA homes built on cliffs, now erosion under the homes ( sea level) is forcing homeowners to move. Who will purchase a home on packed sand/dirt and stones? I get they wanted the view.

      Yup..I never went back to Sanibel after they built that monstrosity of a hotel at the end blocking the entire beach...

      Before the hurricane, island residents wanted to ban leaf blower use in lieu of rakes to reduce the noise. They are really considerate when it come to respecting nature. No worries. 😎

    What is the cost of rebuilding the bridge? Who pays for that? I understand Florida has no State tax. This is a battier island and this is not the last cat4-5 hurricane. If people rebuild they will need to pay the price.

      These are barrier islands. They were never meant to be built on. They keep filling in mangrove swamp, pumping up sand, and pouring cement slabs for tin cans that were never meant to withstand hurricanes. It messes with the wildlife habitat, the natural order of coastal lands so everyone there can have a nice view of the sunset. Until the proverbial s--- hits the fan like it did with Ian. And it will happen again. These barrier islands should be national seashore parks that everyone can enjoy. Not just the little slices of beach that are left for the rest of the population. You know, the places you can get an $18.00 cheeseburger and for an extra $6.50 you can get some fries too. Paradise!

THATS WAS MINE and it washed away from 2265 W Gulf Drive… it would mean the world to get it back even though I know it’s not running…thank you to anyone who knows where it it and thank you to ABC for finding it. How crazy, our condo is gone, all of it, and yet there that bad ass Bintelli stands lol.

    The best views, the best beaches are left only to the wealthiest people. Most average hard working Americans are lucky to be able to buy a mobile home in a park inland somewhere. Natives with old family homes get priced out by increasing property taxes. Very sad!

    Waste more of my tax dollars that we don't have on a bridge that will be wiped out in the next hurricane, they need to tax these people hard to recover our wasted tax money that is being spent on the few wealthy residents that live on a barrier island at sea level.

      Oh yeah when will that be? 20 years? That’s about how many years since it’s been since Charley and the people that own vacation homes on these islands pay more in property taxes than most of the people in Florida. The majority of the homes start at a million. A person I know their house is $11.2 million. Probably should stop running your gator without knowing facts.

    4’ elevation and 15’ storm surge don’t mix. Learn from that building that made it through the Mexico beach hurricane. 40’ piling’s with the house lifted 20’ above elevation.
