This is a great little museum. The staff is very friendly and the equipment well maintained. I've ridden in the summer, on the Pumpkin Train and the Snow Train. The first ride was in the mid 1960s and the latest ride was in August of 2012. There are static displays as well as rolling stock. It's well worth a trip to North Freedom, WI to see the place. Ride the train and just have a good time. Be sure to take the youngsters.
There are currently two in-service locomotives: MCRY #1256 (used in this video) and MCRY #4 (our 44-ton switch engine used for yard work). Domtar #1001 was purchased in 2018 and will be operational in 2021 as backup power to #1256. MCRY #7, the previous backup to #1256, could be made operational on short notice for now, but is set to begin an overhaul soon and will be out of service for some time once it begins. Milwaukee Road #988 has been out of service for years but is also undergoing restoration to operation. That is a secondary-tier project so is proceeding slowly. All five of the locomotives mentioned so far are diesel locomotives. For steam locomotives, none are currently operational, but two are being worked on to make them operational again. C&NW #1385 is in the latter stages of a complete overhaul and is nearest to completion. Work is also now restarting on WC&C #1, but that one still has years of work ahead. The "Restorations" section of our website contains updates on these projects. Other steam locomotives have or are undergoing cosmetic restorations.
There are currently three "primary" car restoration projects that represent the lion's share of work taking place. Those are: LS&I #64 coach car, the DULUTH sleeping car, and EJ&S #2 coach/baggage car. However, at least 13 other cars had restoration or maintenance work done on them in 2020, ranging from repainting the car to adding light fixtures. A summary of 2020 work can be found on the "Restorations" section of our website, under the Car Shop category.
at the moment they have no operating steam locomotives. However. they are restoring CNW 1385 which should be back on the rails in the somewhat near future.

Honestly, the narrator's voice is kinda soothing.
