- Baudrillard stands as one of the most influential and relevant thinkers of the later 20th century. Best known for his work Simulacra and Simulation, Baudrillard's intellectual career started with The System of Objects. A book that sought to analyze the newly emerging world of sign-value, and the material rupture of early serial commodities. Baudrillard sought to bring a structural, material analysis with newer fields such as semiotics and social psychoanalysis as to give a new lens to 20th-century capitalism. As The System of Objects developed from his Ph.D. thesis, it serves as a relatively quiet, yet important piece of philosophy that helped shape late 20th-century thought.

This was my entry point into philosophy, just bought it summer 2019, didnt understand everything (cause english is also not my native language), but im glad i bought it and read it
It's a pretty difficult and dense read to say the least. But, very significant at examining production and consumption and it's relative change.

Oh I hope you cover all 40 books of Baudrillard’s. I would eagerly watch each and every one. I’ve read most of them.
That’s an achievement I admire! Any recommendation on selection and order? Just finished ‘for a critique of the political economy of the sign’ and decided I was going to make 2021 the year of Baudrillard. I can’t help but think he understood something no one else did because based on what I glean from secondary sources his theories explain some of the more absurd aspects of contemporary culture. Just not sure whether I should go back and read system of objects or if I was to move forward what I should read next. I would like to understand how his thought developed and his foundational ideas.
What five books would you recommend for starting with Baudrillard? Preferably books which are the most relevant regarding today's cultural and societal conditions.

Bought this book some months ago and, to be honest, still haven't managed to understand even the first chapter. First philosophy/sociology book I've ever decided to read. I now feel as confused about it as I feel interested in it hahaha. Your video really gave me support so I can go on with my reading, thanks!
Don't give up, I felt the same ten years ago starting Adorno's "Dialectic of Enlightenment", my first philosophy book. It will get better, you will understand more and more of these texts, just try to read them as good as you can and the rest will follow!
The best thing to do is to bought books that are an introduction to social philosophy and political philosophy.
That way you can situate the author within certain schools of thought and start to understand how they approach certain concepts .
Sometimes companions to philosophy books also help.
Keep reading. With luck, the ending of parts will give context to the beginning or the areas in which you don't fully understand. And after you can contemplate the whole.
I recommend the book "The Lonely Crowd" by David Riesman.

I it’s just an iteration of the same thoughts. I’m pretty sure there’s a paragraph in society of the spectacle about how we just repeat same things over and over again just through a different voice or something like that.

Did you argue for why credit was essential for this to happen? Seems as though it could have happened without credit
"signifying transcendence". that phrase gives me goosebumps but i can't put my finger on why. "something that was once only associated only with kings and feudal lords" is now available to every yuppie karen whether male or female. thus the "walking pole". i am a relatively uneducated prole peasant. could you help me out? is baudrillard suggesting that this system or tendency is healthy and normal or is he talking about pathology? Is the system of objects a natural and beneficial evolution of mankind or is he saying something has gone horribly wrong?

Yeah, no. Videos like this remind me to go read the book myself. Everyone wants condensed quick summaries to save themselves the trouble of thinking it out.
I feel like the ideas in this book are behind this barrier of complexity that could be simplified well enough for more average peopl engage with it's ideas. The way it's written doesn't fit the actual difficulty of the concepts.
The productive process of commodities is awful, and the downside - and it’s being resolved by deep-pocket capital itself in the form of automatons / robots / machines. Modern man: “NOOO now how will I buy iCommodity! Destroy the machines! Give us back our jobs!!” Company: “OK” Modern Man: “NOOOO!!!! Work is alienating!!!”
