Legend RIP MP. Funny I surfed with him once. I was looking at Kirra as it was a good swell and this guy with a dog, said come and surf Snapper with me. I was 15 and did not know at the time who it was, I can say I paddled out with the great MP legend, I surfed lots in Kirra back in the late 70's and early 80's before heroin also took that away. Like many of us of that day. I think in my mind he had something no surfer ever has since, just pure magic. KS is a great surfer just different style. Michael just flowed and made it look so easy. Supernatural I think. Yes he will always be a hero to me.
Late arvo at Burleigh in final. Surf was dying to mush. Then on came MP. Made Burleigh rubbish look like it was pumping. He was in another dimension. Everyone was in awe.
True, we looked at what the judges used as a guide at first then after a long discussion decided it was NOT the way to go and as a result Michael won ... The whole idea was he wanted to take surfing to another level and not be tied to the strict surfing format of that era and to be honest the judges at the time should be congratulated for having the ability to not only recognize his efforts but accept his approach impartially and award him the win.
Best surfer ever existed IMO, because he was the original one!!! The first of a lineage of serious competitive surfers! Curren and Slater followed him!!!!!!!
Anybody remember Steven Green, he surfed kirra in 64 to about 71 with all the local,s, I was in a contest with Rabbit when I was 7yr old but I was average. Rabbit hanging 5 on a full wave in the days when you could jump in from the car park. A couple of years before that there was 30 meters of sand in front of the surf shop where Edie Charlton let us local kids take surf o planes or boards out for free. People would ask , where do you get boards, so it was good advertising. The beach was packed on weekends and the endless line to get a free all day sucker was also a must do on Sundays. Good clean fun,,,no towel no money no sun cream no shoes,,,yep.
You can argue that purist surfing philosophy and competitive surfing are two separate things. But the reality is that from those early steps into making surfing a pro sport, it has propelled the skill levels to, at the time, unthinkable heights. Was fortunate to have filmed MP on those events at Bells.
but back then that morning of the earth cutback was pure power perfection back then. yeah but your observation is probly right. What a legend. there is no one like him from that era! do you agree?
Nah, his style is old school...flow,style,coolnes. Thrusters are shaped for power tricks, i wouldn't see it fitting on the Wizard's style. a fish maybe.

His surfing reminds me of Tom Curren's.
