Cinderella has way more agency than people give her credit for. She doesn’t wait around for a prince. The one time she defies her abusers, she happens to fall in love with a prince, and that happens to be her escape route. She never once dreamed for a prince.

@@thaliarice3891 You're absolutely right about that, but I think that's more of a parent issue because we can't expect kids to understand complex concepts like justice, bravery, love, loyalty etc portrayed in these movies and thus they pick up on simpler things like being a princess, having beautiful hair or having a gown but if a parent was to get involved with his child while watching these movies or maybe not watching but just talking about the movie with them, it can be of a great difference.
I didn't really watch Cinderella but I had a book that I used to read again and again, which I suppose is a much better way to understand the essence of the story then the movie, but I understand no kids gonna read a book.

When I was a little girl watching Cinderella, I couldn't care less about the prince, he was just "something" vaguely happening in the finale that didn't catch my attention at all... I was only fascinated by her character, the way she could still find beauty and kindness in that miserable life, the way she treated those animals around her, the super cute little mouses and everything... She was just dreaming of a night out with a beautiful dress, she wasn't thinking at all to be rescued by a man... The only thing I always found disturbing is that I so wanted her to wear the dress sewed by the little mouses (that sewing scene still makes me cry today), she didn't need that pompous dress from the fairy

So quick to jump into all the negative aspects of those movies, when they actually teach young people the value of compassion, generosity, resilience, and the meaning of standing one's ground. People are such a big pet peeve of mine for one of these reasons alone.

I never saw Cinderella as her waiting for a rich man to rescue her. She was being persecuted by her stepmother and yet she still stayed strong, she was determined she was getting to that ball and it proved that if you stick with your dreams magic can still happen. Little Mermaid broke all the rules for what she wanted. She was a tough girl/fish. I think they are both great role models for little girls personally

Cinderella is not a bad or weak character. She is hardworking, brave, and kind, despite being abused and going through loss. She goes after her dreams. She is a beacon of compassion.
Ariel is adventurous, daring, and a fighter. She brought two worlds at odds with each other together.
These are great films for kids.

The Original is JUST as good. Cinderella never went to that ball hoping a man would save her. She went to the ball to have some fun because her life at home was severely restricted. It just so happen that she met a man at the ball - they clicked and he just happened to be a fabulously wealthy prince. He was a very minor part in Cinderella's story imo

Saying that Cinderella should rescue herself is basically saying that victims of abuse are weak and don't make an effort to get out of their awful lives. Also, Cinderella does not wait around for a rich guy to rescue her, she escapes the room that her step-mother has trapped her in on her own merits, by using her own resources and with no help from the Prince

petrikovler She only made an effort after meeting the prince. Before, she had resigned herself to her life. Even when the house was empty and her stepmother and sisters had left for the ball, she just cried instead of taking all the valuables and leaving. The common theme between Cinderella and Ariel is that they are both spurred into action by a man and they only do so because of romantic interest in a man. Whereas a character like Mulan acts because she has other aspirations, saving her father’s life being one of them, and also finding herself.

And before you say, "Oh but there are so many more Cinderella movies where women base themselves around their attraction to men." Yes, because that's where we came from. I'm sure Disney will make plenty more movies akin to Mulan where the princesses don't need no man.

-I love the little mermaid, she is strong-willed and doesn't let people tell her who or what to like. Such an adventurous and lively woman and so compassionate! Humans (pirates) killed her mom and even though it brough so much heartache she was able to see the good in humanity and all that we have to offer, she even fell in love with a human. Yes she gave up her voice but it wasn't just for a man, it was for love.

In order to be with this guy, she does have to, in essence, change who she is, and losing her voice can be seen as a metaphor - even if it's not only "for the guy", it's in order to fit in, to be what she's always wanted to be (denying her very existence as what she was born as). I'm not saying it's one way or the other, but there is so much possibility for discussion. I love the little mermaid, and I watched it a million times as a child, but while the Disney version is definitely an improvement over the original, it can totally be seen as problematic. Other movies like Mulan or Pocahontas undeniably show a more assertive female lead😉

Technically the little mermaid she gave her voice up because she wanted legs the guy was icing on the cake and she was being rebellious sooo not completely horrible lol. There was also alot of her saving him from drowning which I think it was one of the first princess movies you see a princess rescuing the man instead of sitting their watching him drown or waiting for a miracle she actually jumped in and saved him and went after the sea witch she didn't just sit on the side lol.

Part two -- I grew up watching these movies and never thought that a man had to come rescue me. It's important to teach your own kids about reality vs. fiction too. (Even though most kids can figure this out themselves). There are more important things to protect your kids from -- like the advertising industry. All those ads young girls will see that send the message "you need makeup to look good" and "your body should look this way". Also girls are discouraged to go into fields like science and math, many times subconsciously . "oh that's for boys" etc. There's centuries of that kind of thinking that's ingrained in society. That's the kind of stuff to be focused on improving for girls, not "the little Mermaid" Keira even admitted she likes the movie! And she turned out just fine didn't she? Case and point!

    • @unknownstranger6875

I agree. I grew up watching these films and still watch them as an adult, but I didn’t wait for a man to rescue me. I agree with you on everything else as well. If young girls want to be scientist we should encourage them and also tell them not to pay attention to the toxicity of the media.

People who constantly make Cinderella out to be this pinnacle of anti-feminism are basically saying the abusive situation she was put in against her will since she was a CHILD was her fault and she was weak for not solving it on her own a long time ago. Her simplifying the characters circumstances in such a way speaks to a broader issue and she outta sit down and watch the movie all the way through herself. She thought she was being so progressive too. Peak ignorance.

They condemn everything related to femininity, traditional roles, homemaking etc. True feminism is about giving women the freedom to choose. But when she says such things, she implies that some women are better than others. I want to work and be independent but if a woman wants to stay at home to be a homemaker or wants to bag a rich man and be his trophy wife, that's none of your business. If they are both happy like this then live and let others live.

Cinderella is actually so much more than a movie *just* about a prince coming to a damsel’s rescue. She grew up in a household so mistreated and unloved, yet she turned to nature and animals to find an outlet for the utmost love and generosity she had to give. She was resilient and hardworking. These all make up for a strong woman.
The Little Mermaid is also more about Ariel’s dream to explore world beyond water body and her strive to be a human being, creatures who have always fascinated her. Prince Eric was surely a push that enabled her to give up her voice, but it wasn’t for him. It was for the love she had developed for him and the world beyond theirs.
*I am in no way disrespecting Keira’s decision. She’s the mother and she knows what’s better for her child. It’s just a personal opinion. I personally think she’s a good mother, from what we’ve seen so far.*

LOOK, I've been watching classical disney movies like Cinderella and snow white since I was a child. But I have never ever took the film as just a story where princess is rescued by a prince or met a prince etc.
I never even noticed or cared about the prince which baaarely appeared in the film.
The film is much more than that. Babies and child dont care about the story. They care about the music, expression, art and the magical atmosphere that make them to float inside the film.
Its these adults who are becoming blind on the true value of something by being too sensitive and extremely focused on one certain thing(women empowerment stuff)
It is YOU who is making yourself only capable to think in that way.
Look who is actually anti feminist now...🙄
Plus, all story are mainly focused on how the PRINCESS struggled in difficult circumstances so its not about marrying a prince. Meeting with a prince is just a tiney part of the story to sum up in a fairy tale manner lol. And I like it. It's cute.
Like really, i feel bad for the children in this generation for not being able to experience and appreciate the magic walt disney used to give before...
Story of nowaday's movies like Frozen and Moana seems more complicated and interesting than the simple story of classical movies like Cinderella, but i dont see or feel any magic and those excitement that legend artists created with hand drawing animation. It's not visually appealing anymore as they mainly focus on the Story... The faces of moana and frozen characters look almost the same.... I do like those films but it's sad how current Disney shifted entirely to 2D or 3D animation while forgetting the beauty of hand drawing animation.
Anyway, I'm blessed to be raised up by watching classical Disney, especially cinderella!
It's a shame how great actress like Kaira knightly don't understand the beauty of art!
