i know dom joked about buying the board game but i absolutely want to play this!!
The game should be run again but with new win conditions for the pieces. Would be the only way that makes sense without meta gaming.
@Chronichu I doubt anyone but Dom will remember which piece was which ability particularly with the speed they were rotating through them.

I love how they've managed to create a representation of communism so accurate that the players unironicly want to die in game because the situation is that awful. It's not just them making a joke, and I love that.

I want Laurie, Sully, Adam, and Tilley to be the four to play it.
If you ever use any first person singular pronouns (I, me, my etc) while playing the game, you instantly lose 100 rubles. Only collective pronouns, such as We, Our, or Us is permitted under communism.
Of course Dom would be the one to make Adam play Monopoly in a video

It's hilarious how _actually intimidating_ Dom is at various points in this game.
This. I've never been to this channel before, I just spied a link to this particular video in my sidebar and was instantly intrigued. I know the others well enough from partsFUNknown etc. but didn't really remember Dom much from their videos that I've watched, so I was basically viewing him _as_ Stalin here. Every time he was smiling while looking straight down the lens it felt, simultaneously, totally avuncular yet utterly sinister. I don't know if it was the words, the alternately genuine and mirthless laughter, the 'tache, the pipe or what, but he absolutely nailed that performance!
Oh, and I would definitely want to see a 4-player version 😄
I assume DOM is not just his name. He absolutely controls both. Sullivan meekly looks for approval to continue, Adam is usually the one moderating and controlling the situation and he just shuts up.

This has honestly been an accurate representation of what it was like there for the average person. You can't have too much, and you can't have nothing. You can't do anything suspicious, and to get anywhere you need to bribe your way through. In the end - develop a dark sense of humor to cope with the situation.

I don't know why, but for some reason the way Dom says "Communist Test!" with such evil excitement is the funniest thing to me.

With the disappearance of [REDACTED] it's amazing that Sullivan's only House Rules loss is against Teri in Pictionary. But I don't know how he was meant to win that one anyway. He was either drawing a picture to nobody or guessing a clue nobody was drawing.

Dom was a great addition to this video. His penchant for inflicting misery and pain on Adam and Sullivan is perfect for House Rules, and i'd like to see him as games master for future episodes.
They seriously need to make this a LEGITIMATE board game. The Rules alone are absolutely fantastic, and the TRUE example of the mindset of a madman :)
Did you know there actually was a communist monopoly sold at Walmart once? A single dude complained about it being a positive representation of communism, and they took it down (Or so I heard). It cannot be found in stores anymore, and they only made like 80 copies or something like that. of course, this version is, as said in the begining, Stalin-centric.

@@francislelievre5172 I did, but that is co-operative isn't it? So the total opposite of NRB Communopoly. I did find a one page variant rules of Communopoly from 2013 by Socks and Puppets, though it is just a few simple rule changes and doesn't have the glorious torture of Communist Test, No Chance and the outrageous win conditions of the player pieces.

I though Dom badly hiding behind the shelf at the start was going to be one of the greatest parts of this video then he stepped out dressed like that and it just got better from there

2: for those running left wing ideology they absolutely know what's going on, their modus operandi is to dress themselves up as something you like, ruin it, then blame and ostracize you for disliking their skinsuit version of what they've made. That's how they took something many people wanted (better working conditions) put it on as a skinsuit over the top of what lurked below (mass starvation and millions of deaths) and turned it into communism.

Fun fact, the original iteration of monopoly was actually a communist teaching tool. It had communist mechanics and everything.
love this idea. I feel like the money smuggled to the west shouldn't be removed when someone is disappeared, since if their successor escapes to the west at the end it should still be in the bank since the state doesn't have access to it
I think money at Free Parking/in the West should remain where it is. That way, another player can collect the money left at Free Parking and report someone who "doesn't exist" (they go to prison, of course, for wasting the state's time), and money in the West doesn't get recollected by the state. (This could allow for an end condition where the state runs out of money!)
That would also solve the problem where most of the game doesn't actually matter for the score. Money to the west as a permanent score for the player, then in the end the final characters decide how the money is modified, and that would probably turn what's currently a one-time joke into an actual, playable game.
But the new player wouldn't know that it existed.
Where the money is hidden in the west would be lost on the death of the player surely
Yea but that requires that only one family member is disappeared, in reality everyone who ever loved the disappeared person I most likely dead “never existed” too. So the money in the west may never be found.
Definitely play a 4 player version, seeing Laurie and Jon react to the fairness of the rules would make it worth watching on its own
My favourite Stalin fact: Stalin had a sort of twisted humor. When meeting a party member he hadn't seen for a while, he'd go like: "Comrade! What a surprise! Haven't you been arrested yet?" and then enjoy the look on their faces. 🙂

Supposedly Stalin only kept Khrushchev around because he liked his jokes. Khrushchev ended up succeeding Stalin in the same way that Claudius became Roman emperor. No-one supported him, but they all really REALLY hated Beria (who was a genuinely evil and sadistic psychopath, even by Soviet standards) and so the guy who made Stalin laugh was a better choice.
Stalin: "He looked scared at that joke, he must be trying to betray me. Kill him."
Also Stalin: "He took that joke really well, can't have that confidence around. Kill him."

There is a commercially available (or was) version of Monopoly titled: Socialistopoly.
I know, because I purchased it about ten years ago while Christmas shopping at a Sacramento, California shopping mall. I gave it to my adult daughter that holiday season.
We’ve played it a few times in the last couple of years. It’s a lot like your Communopoly board game. But I think I like yours more!
I’ll tell you one thing for certain, playing these board games generates some pointed questions specifically from young people who haven’t necessarily given much thought to what it might be like living in a communist nation. My niece and nephews played one evening with us and I swear if they said, “…no way, that can’t be true!” once, they said it a dozen times. Unfortunately, my sister (their mother) married a very nice but very progressively liberal fellow, so their children haven’t necessarily had the sad bitter truths of things like Stalinism and “The Party” and other nasty little facts of the real world explained to them properly.
By the way, my brother-in-law (the children’s father) is an NYU graduate. Go figure.

My favourite Stalin thing is the fact he ordered multiple assassin's to kill Tito, they were all caught. But it goes story that Tito wrote a letter to Stalin saying "stop sending assassin's, because if I send you one, there won't be need to send another one". Story goes, Stalin died soon after.
In fairness, I don't think an agent of Tito caused him to have a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in his 70s; as with many Soviet premiers, it was an unfortunate miracle that he lasted as long as he did.

I love how the two first characters (who definitely never existed) had wining conditions linked to the number of houses and hotels where there no way anyone can survive long enough to build those
This was just amazing. From Dom fitting the role of Stalin perfectly, to all the details in the rules, to ‘no chance’ and ‘communist test’ to how the game actually played out, this was just incredibly entertaining

Stalin died of a treatable aneurysm or stroke because he had a rule where his guards weren't allowed to interrupt him or they'd "disappear." His last pair of guards disappeared because they burst in when they thought he was being assassinated, when in truth it was a test. The next round of guards didn't fall for this as they didn't wish to die- I mean disappear
I would love to see another game where someone from the group creates the rules but neither Adam nor Sully know the rules throughout the game

I’d love to see a four player match, but Dom needs to reprise his role as the State. The subtle flexibility he takes with the rules is priceless
Proposed rule changes:
1) pieces are assigned randomly, I liked how no one knew what to expect this go around
2) money you hide in the West stays with you, even after you disappear (we’ll say a family member stashed it for you) just to provide some sense of progress
Additionally, money placed on Free Parking but not collected stays on the board after someone dies/disappears.
@@Captain-Jinn that would help establish the main objective of the game : snuggle money into the West. As is, the only objective is to survive… and even then, it isn’t always beneficial.

Proposed alteration of rule change 1:
-Pieces are assigned by other players through a vote*
-All players not in jail or undergoing questioning may discuss who they'll vote for
-Players write down their vote, then reveal their preference simultaneously
-If the vote is unanimous, nothing happens**
-If the vote isn't unanimous, the ones who didn't vote for the winner go to jail
-If there is a tie Stalin assigns the piece and all players go to jail***

*The politburo member could get an extra vote. Every other player has one vote.
**Alternatively players get rubles as a 'reward'.
***Idk whether players already in jail should disappear or not

Just wanna say, as a Russian, I found this to be extremely hilarious and also an incredibly poignant parody for Stalinist Russia! I’m amazed how hilariously well this simulates the reality of living under Stalin regime. Most of the overseas parodies I see are often just “everyone’s poor, there’s nothing to eat”, but this was ON POINT
finally, a House Rules victory for Sullivan, and a well earned one at that.
I would absolutely love to see a 4-player video of this, and not JUST because NRB has my family and will do unspeakable things to them if I say otherwise! (that's just a happy coincidence, really)
One recommendation I do have, though, is maybe make randomizer cards for the roles, so Adam and Sullivan don't have an unfair advantage when picking their roles. Whenever you would pick a role, you pick a card from the deck, and that tells you what role you are.

Could somebody explain to me why he won? The win condition for the thimble states "Add up your money in your hand and deduct it from the other player's score (reducing theirs in the process). If it goes into the negative, your score is equal to the NEGATIVE VALUE. Otherwise, your score is zero." So, since it was 0 - 1000, both scores should be -1000, indicating a tie. At least, that's how I see it.

My favourite Stalin fact is that his favourite prank was putting a tomato on people's seats in the politburo and waiting for them to sit on it.
My favourite is the fact that he had birth defect that made his left hand (iirc, forearm) shorter and he tried to hide it. In every photo, he either has the left hand hidden, in an obscure angle and or it's edited to look normal length.

I wrote down the rules for myself and thought I should probably paste it into a comment. I filled in the gaps and changed various things to have the game make more sense, and be a bit less overpowered in parts, while still being fun and not for try-hards. I got rid of the win conditions since they're a bit complicated at times and so far I've never seen a house even be built, or smuggled money to the West retained until the end (which still may not change).
COMMUNOPOLY (Stalin's glorious version of "Communism")
Some set up:
- Tax spaces are replaced by cards (now 8 card spaces all up).
- A number of blank cards with 1 Trotsky.
- Ideally the Soviet Union anthem playing in the background.
Rules:
- Roll to see which piece you get (just number and roll for all selecting). Each piece has its own ability.
- All players start with a generous 1,000 rubles from the State.
The State will not give you any more money if it means you then have over 1,000 rubles.
- If at any point you have more than 1,000 rubles, you will be taken to a labour camp, and you will surrender all your assets to the state, you dirty capitalist pig.
You keep your money (you'll need it), but if you still have over 1,000 rubles when/if you get out of the gulag, you will go to the gulag.
- Every time you land ON Stoy! (stop), you receive your generous handout of 200 rubles from the state. If you PASS Stoy, you pay 50 rubles to bribe the checkpoint guard. If you don't have the money, you go to the gulag.
- If you roll a double, 3 times, you go to the gulag (rather greedy of you), and they don't have to be consecutive doubles.
- Every turn you remain in the gulag, you pay 100 rubles to the gulag guards. You cannot earn any money or build any further development, or own anything while in the gulag. Also if you can't pay the gulag guards, you disappear.
- If someone lands on your property, but you are in the gulag, they must still try to pay you, but since you are in the gulag, that money will be redirected. To The State.
- When you go to the gulag (unless otherwise stated), you can only leave the gulag when rolling doubles, but if you roll a 1 on any of those dies, you disappear.
- If you disappear, all of your assets, cards, and money (including Free Parking money) are seized by the state. You now pick a new piece and start again with 1000 rubles (your next of kin). That person never existed.
- You can smuggle money to the West, by first landing on "free parking", and then placing any amount of money there. After that, each full lap around the board back to/passed Free Parking, will result in 100 rubles of that money being successfully smuggled to the West.
If you advance to another location through a card, that contributes to your lap (unless you went to the gulag, in which case you start the lap fresh once you get to/passed Free Parking).
If any other player lands directly on free parking in the meantime, they keep your money as a reward from the state for ratting you out, and you disappear.
The other person who landed on your Free Parking money can put their own money there in the same turn.
- If you have property with a building on it, you can also smuggle money when landing there after doing a full lap. Only one smuggling attempt at a time is allowed. You can still be ratted out, which will result in you disappearing.
- If you disappear, the successfully smuggled money will pass onto your next of kin (new piece), but Free Parking money will be lost (including with property).
- When someone lands on a property and doesn't want to/can't buy it, there is no filthy capitalist auction.
- The game ends when the last disappearance occurs, as there are now no next of kin/pieces left for the player to select.
- The winner is simply the person who smuggled the most money to the west.
If no one successfully smuggled any money to the west, then the Communopoly loss is shared equally.

Properties with special rules that you can't purchase from the State with money:
The Kremlin (Park Lane/Park Place):
- Through pure happenstance, you have gained a certain amount of power on the inside. You can now make as much money as you want, and Soviet leaders will look the other way. You also don't have to bribe the checkpoint guards.
NKVD Headquarters (Mayfair/Boardwalk):
- 1st time you land there you miss your next turn for questioning.
- 2nd time you are taken in and quizzed on doctrine. Wrong answers send you to the gulag. There will be 3 questions.
Just a load of really specific and obscure, impossible to know AND impossible to remember questions ALL about John Wayne (Stalin was a big fan).
- 3rd time you disappear. No one was even there.
Utilities:
Chernobyl (Electric company):
- This property is entrusted to you for free. You have to take it, but it can be swapped. If you do not own the Water Works, the power plant will explode in 3 turns (starting with your next turn) from overheating through lack of water supply, unless you possess the Water Works. If it explodes, the Electric Company is restored to the board, but all your properties are destroyed in the explosion and can never be bought or developed again. Anyone who lands on it during this time before it explodes, will be forcibly handed the Electric Company, and so it happens to them instead. If you lose the Water Works, the countdown starts again.
You are not allowed to trade or sell or give away your properties to other players during this time.
Once the Electric Company explodes, you will be put in jail for your crimes against humanity.
If you end up in jail before 3 turns, the explosion will happen when you go to jail.
Water Works:
When landed on, this property can only be acquired by distributing all your properties (including mortgaged properties and not including buildings) to other people, as evenly as one can manage. If you possess the Water Works, anyone who lands on it has to give you all their properties (including mortgaged properties and not including buildings), unless they have no properties, in which case they get the Water Works from you.

- Denounce your collaborators! (hold onto this card)
If you are in the gulag, you can use this to swap your place with someone else.
- Party Vanguard
Take 3 turns in quick succession
- Double Agent
Swap pieces with someone else of your choice.
- "Accident"
You disappear after violently falling out of a window onto some bullets.
- Siege of Stalingrad
The Nazis have been encircled and outmanoeuvred. Take one of your opponent's properties permanently (minus any buildings on the property). It cannot be bought, sold, given away, or developed, unless you disappear.
- Nomenklatura
Advance to The Kremlin. If you pass Stoy, you do not have to pay a bribe.
- Contribution to the State (keep this card)
If you have over 1,000 rubles, you can just pay the excess as a "contribution to the state", and carry on.
- Anti-revisionist
Miss your next turn.
- Go into Hiding
Miss your next 3 turns. If your piece ends up on the same space with someone else, you disappear.
- Tax Time
You owe the state 101 rubles in tax. To help with administrative costs, you will not get any change. The state will also not help you with fussing around over exchanging money for smaller notes on this instance.
- Best Seller!
Your book is popular. Receive 500 rubles and roll 1 die.
On a 6 you stash your money and burn your book before the NKVD arrive. You successfully deny all knowledge.
On a 1, all of your assets are seized and you are shot in the head (pick a new piece).
Any other number, you keep your money, but you go to the gulag.

- COMMUNIST TEST (community chest):
- Trotsky or Notsky
All players take a card but do not look at it. One of the players is now Trotsky, if they have the Trotsky card. When a player next lands on a train station, just that player flips over their card to reveal if they are Trotsky or not. If they are not Trotsky, they carry on. If they ARE Trotsky, they disappear.
These un-flipped cards stay in play whether you disappear first or not.
- Great purge!
Everyone loses all their buildings and half their properties (rounding up). Rock paper scissors to decide which of you disappears. You must keep the Electric Company if you have it, because that's your assigned job.
- Counter revolutionary
You've been indoctrinated by the radical Bukharinists. Reverse your direction on the board (only you).
- Cultural Revolution
You all now go 'round the board the other way to how you currently do.
- Show trial (hold onto this card)
At any point you can call a vote to have someone in the gulag released, or disappeared. As the holder of this card your vote counts for double. If it's a tie, they stay in the gulag.

The State admits no fault.
- Collectivisation Drive!
Combine everyone's assets (including money and buildings) and redistribute them evenly. If they cannot be divided equally, players simply have to agree on who either misses out, or gets the excess. Failure to democratically all agree, lands everyone in the gulag.
Buildings stay attached to the same properties, and the State will not take any excess, or exchange any currency, because that is not in the spirit of a collectivisation drive.
- Secret Informant
You're working for the NKVD while you have this single-use card. If you land on the same square as another player, you can optionally send them to the gulag (or wait for a different opportunity) and then put this card back in the deck.

You're a member of the proletariat. If you run out of money, the State will utilise its social safety net, providing you 1 ruble to keep you going. Unless you run out of money in the gulag, of course. Same goes if you can’t pay the checkpoint guard in full, ending up in the gulag.

You're Spetsnaz GRU. If you want, you can roll a 1 or a 6 with 1 die, to force other players of your choice to take the consequences of any No Chance or Communist Test cards you land on.
- Car:
You're in the politburo. You can draw 2 cards if you land on Communist Test, and then choose which of the 2 you want.
- Dog:
You're a bourgeoise lapdog. You can draw 2 cards if you land on No Chance, and then choose which of the 2 you want.
- Penguin:
You're a spy, you can smuggle money to the West when you land on any owned property with a building (following the same smuggling rules).
- Ship:
You're in the Red Army. Rail stations are half price.
- Rubber duck:
You're one of Stalin's body-doubles. If you land on the same space as someone else, you can decide if you want to roll for a 1 or 6 with 1 die, to send them to the gulag.
- Iron:
You're a widowed babushka. You do not have to bribe to pass Stoy! Nobody pays you any attention.
- Wheelbarrow:
You're a Kulak. You can force a player to hand over the brown properties if they own them when you land on them (including any buildings already on the property), or you get them for free when you land on them if unowned.
- T-rex
You're an unreformed Old Bolshevik. You don't buy properties, but any owned property you land on can be seized, including any buildings already on the property. Any money you make is divided equally among yourself and all players, with excess above a player having 1,000 rubles, going to the State. Anyone can use the buildings to smuggle money to the West.
- Hat
You're a nepman. When you complete a collection, get a free house, you parasitic landlord. But you need to pay 150 rubles to the prison guards instead of the usual 100 rubles.
- Thimble:
You're a collectivised peasant. You only get 1 die.

Definitely bring this game back. The amount of work and detail is pretty amazing. Admittedly, without Don playing the role of the State and introducing rules on the fly, it might lack some. Definitely worth seeing a 4-player game of it.
I absolutely want this as a full four-player episode. However, to mix it up and make sure it doesn't end too quickly, add in the four other pieces that got removed and give them their own win conditions too. Otherwise, the disappearances might happen too quickly with four people. But this was a banger!
This needs to not just be a 4 person house rules, I want this as a regular staple of the channel! This was fantastic!

I just realized that when they were "agreeing" on the even distribution of wealth that the one in jail had more leverage. He could just refuse to agree, and force the other guy to join him in jail. Or he could use that to make sure he got the extra.

Given what happens if you become destitute (go to jail) and what happens when you become destitute *in jail* (you disappear), I fully expect the player already in jail to disappear.
(but now that I think about it, that just gives more leverage to the other player, unless they don't want the one in jail to disappear for whatever reason)

That play was woul ld have also changed the dynamic, as he had money to roll to get out while the other one didn't. Pulling him to jail would have removed him in a turn.
I thought that as well but they had to split everything. The only agreement they had to come to was excess. So he couldn’t leverage his money but could have used that strategy with the extra property.
This is the most devious game I have ever seen. I love the fact by the end the players learned to hate owning property, to hate owning money, and just succumb to the whims of the all powerful ruler. It's just like the real thing!!

Definitely needs to be a full board game club. You should create a few new characters though to keep the surprises. the shock value of finding out your piece can't win is what makes it incredible

I truly do not feel ill will towards Russians, but their government has to go. Preferably directly to the Hague, but one can dream, can one not?
