I find it works to pre wash the fabric in an old thin cotton pillowcase - no or minimal fraying and no time wastage edge-finishing. You also could also use one of those bags for delicates.
Wonderful tips! Thank you! I didn't know that rayon had changed a bit over the years. I have two pieces that are decades old, so I will keep that in mind. ☺️
This is such a helpful video thank you so much. I found a gorgeous black and white printed fabric that I’m going to use to make a pair of light weight cropped and tapered summer pants. Sort of a Bali inspired look. I will use all of your tips as I try to complete this project. ❤️
This was great! I JUST bought the Valetta top pattern last night! I bought a linen online and ended up being very light and drapey and have had my eye on that pattern so......happy mother's day to me 😍 I want to venture into the rayon challis but I'm a beginner so a little nervous! Shout out to you Texas lady! It's pushing upper 90s to near 100 this weekend over here in the panhandle!!! Need a Valetta top now!!! 🤣
Some great tips. I might add that I have learned to buy 1/4 to 1/2 more yardage than the pattern requests because even though I prewashed the fabric, I did not have enough material for the sleeves. It became a sleeveless top and still looked cute.
Hi Melly, I love your shirt, the pineapple fabric and the pattern. Rayon fabric has such a nice feel, haven’t sewn with it, great tips for when I do. Hope you are doing well.
This is great info, thank you !! Do you think it will be OK to use Rayon for a cosmetic bag ..... fusing it to fusible fleece?? Also .... What is the patter for your shirt?? I LOVE it !! thanks!
thank you for this tip! I was about to buy this kind of cloth but base on what you said that we need a smaller needles and its flowly... hmmm may be I should try some other cloth for skirt? what do you suggest
Thanks for your excellent tips, Melly! I also love to wear rayon since I live in Florida! Unfortunately my low to mid range Singer has no adjustment for the presser foot. Do you know of any other way to compensate for the high pressure?
Brilliant thank you! I sew a full sun skirt and it looked awesome until it didn't haha. The length at different points changed over time and the fabric ripped on the seams. I guess I did something wrong and based on your tips, like all of it :)
Thanks for the tips. Do you use the same methods for rayon with a small amount of stretch in it? How do you finish the seams while sewing the garment together?
I’m just finding your video after receiving some rayon challis for a wrap dress I want to make. It specifically states not to wash but “dry clean only”. Is all rayon challis made the same? I’m afraid of my fabric shrinking the wrong way before I work with it. I intend to dry clean the dress once it’s done. Should I dry clean it first before cutout?
Melly, these tips are so helpful. Yes, fraying happened here this week ! I never thought to SEW THE EDGES together !!! . . . That’s applicable to other fabric types, like linen , which have also frayed plenty for me.

Yes, there are many methods to control fraying.
Thank you. I like we can avoid edge finishing. I will try to thin pillowcase method.
I am going to sew with Rayon Challis for the first time.. These tips are wonderful! Thank you 🙏. so much!
You are so welcome!
I’m new to sewing with rayon so this was very helpful. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
I just made 2 jumpsuits and a pair of wide leg pants in rayon - using these tips really helped. Thank you!
Wonderful!

Yes, I feel like the newer rayons are definitely better in terms of shrinkage!
I use my overcast foot on my machine to 'serge' the edges before washing. Great tips and tricks, Thanks!
That works well too!

Light linen works great for Valetta too. And I'm glad I have a pool and excited for warm pool weather!
@@Mellysews yeeees!!! Totally time for that!
great video.this fabric for a dress is so pretty
Thank you! 😊

Yes, I have found this type of fabric shrinks more than many others during prewashing
Thank you so much for these great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Starch tip is genius game changer 😍

Excellent tips! Thank you so much! :)

i use tissue on top/bottom whenever i sew and i dont have starch for added stability, helps relieve said pressure/snagging too.
Ok
Loved this tutorial
Glad you liked it!!

Rayon has a loose weave that is easy to get off grain, so it wouldn't be my first choice.
Great tips. Thank you!

thank you for this tip! I was about to buy this kind of cloth but base on what you said that we need a smaller needles and its flowly... hmmm may be I should try some other cloth for skirt? what do you suggest
It depends on the type of skirt. This fabric is great for a flowy skirt, not good for a structured one.
@@Mellysews still flowly skirt but not rayon... cloth that is not too sensitive
Thanks for your excellent tips, Melly! I also love to wear rayon since I live in Florida! Unfortunately my low to mid range Singer has no adjustment for the presser foot. Do you know of any other way to compensate for the high pressure?
A walking foot can help.
@@Mellysews Thank you!
Wonderful tips. I normally don't use rayon as I find in working factory that rayon holds in the heat for me.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Melly, awesome advice. Do you have a similar one on charmeuse satin?
I don't
Thank you for the tips. Would you also recommend using a walking foot for rayon?
I have never used one with rayon.
Very nice
Thanks
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
what stitch pattern is best used for this garment/fabric
Straight stitch
Thank you!!!!

I love your tips about Rayon fabric. Thank you. But, where do you buy Rayon fabric from?
My favorite shops here: mellysews.com/7-great-online-fabric-stores-buy/
Love the blouse you're wearing. Did you make? Do you have a pattern?
I did, pattern is linked in the video description.
TY 😁👍

If you always plan to dry clean, then no need to wash first.
thank you :)

Awesome
Thanks
Is it stretchy
No. You Might find this helpful mellysews.com/fabric-types-to-sew/
Is it best to starch the wrong side of the fabric?
It doesn't matter which side. The starch soaks through the fabric and washes out after you sew.
Melly, these tips are so helpful. Yes, fraying happened here this week !
I never thought to SEW THE EDGES together !!! . . . That’s applicable to other fabric types, like linen , which have also frayed plenty for me.
Tip #11. Don’t buy rayon. It looks terrible when wrinkled!!!
I love to wear rayon, it's one of my favorite hot weather fabrics.
Lots of fabrics wrinkle, unfortunately! I love the drape of rayon, and that it doesn't feel or look like lightweight satin types.
I’m not enjoying sewing with this type of fabric at all, especially hemming.
Starch helps
Great tips! Thank you!!
