my friend bobbie who died close to a year ago introduced me to this album shortly before she passed and i can't get through 1 second of this incredible incredible flawless album without thinking of her. rest easy bobbie and thank you for showing me this
When I lived in Oregon I used to walk down this one street from time to time. I was always struck by how ugly it was, on one side were the backs of these very tall bleachers for a highschool football field, they had to be over two stories tall and their seemingly unorganized array of aluminum poles completely dominated the view. On the other side of the street were some squat houses, one of which always had the curtains fully open so that you could see right inside. The interior looked as though it had been left completely untouched for decades. There was large, overstuffed furniture with exposed wooden legs. The wallpaper was a dingy light blue covered with religious paintings from various stories of the bible, mostly featuring Jesus. I never once saw a person inside nor a car in the driveway. When I hear this album I imagine the inside of that house, still untouched, still empty of people, with this music somehow lurching around within its rooms, emanating from something we cannot perceive.
My poem for Heaven's Gate: In dressing rooms A chrome haze, marble upwards on dolphin robed. Steele highway, flex inflection, the prairie spoke. You will see the chrome bird over inner horizon. I will guide you through every room of my my stainless home, only to tell you "I Am God" in each. Dirtbike diaspora, white satin as they aimlessly rode. You will enter one of many trains, and know that it is the Dog of God. Its breath tar heavy, its sound a slumber, none awoke. Shrubbery greet you, uninvited They grow. You will know, the gardens of man, the Gates Of Heaven know them.

You know that James Ferraro is a musicial genius when he makes the most beautiful thing you have ever heard and mix that with other types of soundscapes like with jarvid 9, and also mix that in with Alternative R&B and Cloud rap stuff, and a bunch of other stuff and it sounds like a different person made them
oh yeah, that's a whole new level. I don't think James could get away with that at this period, as the recordings are too foggy. But the clarity of recent albums is headed there, for sure, when he is 50.

@Angel Starbath do you think that is what happened, or was it intentional? Was it actually a minecraft sound? I also just wondered if minecraft is about digging underground mines. What a revelation!
my buddy started making his own and he puts a guitar hero mic to an amp and records stuff like that, the result is pretty wild, but I think it varies on what you do or use. Thats the magic in it
Audacity has an export function for AMR files (which is the digital compression used on Nokia phones) that really destroys anything you put into it. I think he puts it onto tape after that. Recording straight into the mic in on an answering machine does the trick too, but you don't always get the digital haze of Ferraro's stuff.
@james Doctor I'm actually fairly certain that it's not even the actual *recording* that is extremely lo-fi, but the stuff James and Spencer used as their output speaker (apparently an old karaoke machine). You can get a very similar sound by plugging a synth into a guitar amp and using some oldschool-style overdrive preset. It doesn't have to do with distance, it's just that whatever they used to playback all their sound (boombox, karaoke machine) made it sound this way in real life (with help of some extremely shitty mics of course). The tape recorder manages to obfuscate that just well enough to not allow for background noises to be heard. Well it certainly adds to the lo-fi-ness, but the main thing that created this sound is their gear itself. Btw, I don't think early Ferraro releases use deliberately shitty digital audio compression. That's what he did with iAsia though, and you can hear how different the "lo-fi" on iAsia is from stuff like this one.
