I've always thought of Javert as a tragic figure. Blinded by his relentless pursuit of the law, he can't understand empathy and self-sacrifice. Thank you for this perspective.
The Les Miserables musical seems more like Lee Cooncidences, because in the novel there was a tree worth of pages, whereas the musical takes on the important parts. Based more off the abridged version of the novel, hence the coincidences. I told people when I was preforming Les Miserables that Gavroche, Eponine were related to the Thenardiers, but they didn’t believe it for a second, because most of their information came from the 1985 musical, which cuts out the relations aspect. Eponine is not once like “Oh! My poor little brother has been shot!”
Excellent exposition on Javert. I have only been able to see 3 or 4 recorded versions of Les Miserables. Basically all movies, including the big budget Hollywood version. I would love to see it on the stage someday. Thank you for your time Mr. Wagner. Blessings for the upcoming holiday to you and yours.

Good point. Once you actually read the book, the musical becomes very rich! It was streamlined to make the show work on stage!
The bits and pieces I have seen on tv never gave me interest to watch the movie...now that I heard you talk about it, I am going to find it....
