    I reckon these birds are pretty smart. I rescued some babies once off the road before they got squashed (as they just ducked down in the middle and wouldn't move), the parents were actually pretty chill didn't try and attack me once I put the babies down off the road. I was expecting them to come after me because they don't know what's really going on but it was almost like they knew I somewhat helped them out.

      I have some hanging around the house. They have their chicks in the back yard, but someone cat get them. I feel so sorry for the parent birds they looks so distressed.

      @zacjohnson8404 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@myvideocassette yeh I saw a similar thing a couple parents lost their chicks or eggs because the area was mowed.... they were behaving like they had lost their mind, like if humans suffered some trauma. Hard to explain but they were acting really strange, it obviously had a strong effect on them.

    • @Cheesus-Sliced
      @Cheesus-Sliced ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Most birds are fairly smart. Most swooping birds don't actually want to put themselves in danger like that, it's just one of their limited intimidation tactics and they'll only do it to large animals like humans if they have previous bad experience with them or absolutely no experience with them. Most of the time, if people have been chill with them they'll be chill with people, same applies to magpies.
      Issues arise when people are taught these birds are aggressive, so people behave aggressively towards them constantly and they're left traumatised and terrified of people.
      If you see their eggs anywhere it's good to put some manner of marker like a post or tee-pee sort of stick arrangement so they don't get accidentally damaged by people.

    • @YortOK
      @YortOK 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've also noticed that plovers seemed to have worked out a way of minimising predators by laying their eggs at intersections and roundabouts so that there is a "shield" of cars constantly flowing around or near them, thus making it dangerous for foxes, cats etc .... Of course I don't know if it is coincidence or by design.

  • @86stackyj

    That "attack position" is actually the bird faking a broken wing in order to try a lure you over to it and away from the nest.

    It's not a plover, it's a masked lapwing.
    When protecting the nest the male comes up close to you and screams LOUDLY at you. Meanwhile mum pretends to have a broken wing and lures you away as she presents herself as your dinner.
    When you are lured/chased away she magically gets better

    When I was in 4th grade, I spied a plovers nest with some fledglings. I ran over eagerly, hoping to catch a nestling in my hand and release it. The parents both started making hell of a lot of noise, and started dive bombing my head! I was distracted for just one second, and diverted my attention from the nestling running in front me on the ground. I looked down, gone! I could not figure it out!
    Later, I came to know that the nestling probably laid down as defense, and they are so well camouflaged, I thought it was just a small rock or a small mound of earth!
    These guys are so adorable!

    The cameran just survived because he is the cameraman, but most of them perished, it's called the "survivor bias", do not believe it's safe just because you see a video like that, it's clear this one just had massive luck or was streaming live and the ending of the video were cut. I think Australians can confirm this is suspicious.

      If there is any niche, an animal will evolve or adapt to take advantage of it. Competition for nests in trees is fierce, so if the animal can keep its eggs safe on the ground, however which way, they will continue to do so. They use aggression and subversion tactics, and it works for them, so that's how they're alive.
      And tbh before humans took over the world, Plains where they nest wouldve been alot safer for them. Just so happens when humans moved in and made these fields for our own gain and destroyed alot their natural habitat they have adapted to nest in our sports fields.

    Why pick such a dumb spot

    • @Cheesus-Sliced
      @Cheesus-Sliced ปีที่แล้ว

      For them, it's a good spot. Just like how spiders build webs across walkways, we make them nice and wide and open with these bright lights that attract bugs. Perfect place for a web, if no-one walks through there for a few days.
