I had never even heard of Patricia Petibon before. This is the first time ever that I see her and hear her singing. Actually, I’m going to compare her with Janet Baker who set the standard for this aria. I didn’t think I would ever hear another version of it that I would like as much. I was wrong!
Patricia Petibon is a remarkable soprano with a special ability to span many different musical fields, including art songs of the classical and romantic periods, art songs with French characteristics. Her singing is very distinctive, lyrical like a goddess, angry like a female warrior. Her performance range is extremely wide and she is a rare featured artist.
The feeling always is that what she is singing is very personal, intimate, something she had lived through. The video is worth her, meaningful, very measured. She understands what she sings about.

Jessye Norman’s rendition is to this day the most refined and best. Jessye’s version is filled with conviction and raw emotion!!!!!
It certainly is and I think will most likely remain that way for decades to come... However, today I found a very decent one, th-cam.com/video/_EkjmEFk6uk/w-d-xo.html. It's Maria Ewig and even though her singing is not as good as Jessye's (Especially on the low register) her acting and fluency completely makes up for it. Her tears are also very convincing.Regarding Jessye, I truly love this video: th-cam.com/video/jOIAi2XwuWo/w-d-xo.html but her performance here: th-cam.com/video/4FESgrLutuE/w-d-xo.html gets me every time. The look on her face at the end of the aria is just priceless. Thanks for your comment, I'm glad I'm not the only one who cherishes her that much.

Romario Seaton Your opinion. There are those of Janet Baker, Victoria de los Angeles, even that of Kirsten Flagstad, all three o f which I prefer to that of Jessye Norman (R.I.P.). This interpretation is good vocally, altho’ I find the video over the top. But that is typical w PP. It is effective if we see it all the way through, as it says something previously unsaid about Dido as well as about PP.

Dido’s Lament will always belong to Jessye Norman
The softness she brings to her performance at times is unlike any other rendition I have heard. The video does not do her justice, although she is so very beautiful. I sense the director pushed her away from her intentions with his lust. She has some incredible special talent that reached many levels. Thank you, Patricia Petibon!!!

Petibon is an amazing stage presence in addition to a wonderful singer. Why do we not have more DVDs -- preferable BD-- of such concert performances/ videos?
The only non-operatic video that is available is the 2004 Universal- France DVD "French Touch" in region 2, PAL, letterbox. The letter box is a pain. Opened to full screen on a 40" Sony, the edges tend to be rough. Otherwise, it is delightful and whets the appetite for more.

After listening to many good singers, even to Jessye Norman, I keep returning to Patricia. There is some witchcraft in her renditions. Jessye and Patricia are the best, so absolutely different but the very best.
