When a smart person says good questions, it's a good interview.

“The meaning of life is something we are using creativity to discover, to build. We can’t find the meaning of life in the world ‘out there’, nor just by pure thought, or by reference to an authority. What we have to do is form explanations about what is right and wrong, what is better and worse, what is beautiful and ugly, and hone those theories, while also trying to meet them. At any one moment, we will meet them imperfectly, just like scientific theories, at any one moment, are only an imperfect explanation of what the physical world is like. But, through criticism and conjecture and seeking the truth, we can eliminate the errors in what we had previously thought and thereby make progress.” -- David Deutsch

Excellent interview. Refreshingly humble approach with provocative, aberrant questions. Interviewers take notes; this is also the reason David enjoyed it. Thanks

I predict that in about 50 years people will be fascinated to experience how the possibilities to record a human voice will have developed.

Very very good--and give the interviewer a break--if you listen to the whole thing you will find that he paces DD very well and asks some fantastic questions.

25:25 David Deutsch makes a comparison between religious belief and multiple universes. Sabine Hossenfelder makes a similar comparison. Sabine argues that belief in multiple universes is religious. David argues that belief in a single universes is religious.

What I heard from David here was not an argument that belief in single universes is religious. Maybe you should listen more carefully? And yes, Sabine's video does, quite unfortunately, make the specific comparison and she does argue that the belief in multiple universes is religious.

Apparently the wonderful interviewer is Ken Rose, who has been incapacitated by stroke.

Not polite to build him up like that. Just start the conversation and treat him normally and have more respect for yourself and your audience

too much useless chit chat from interviewer. waste of precious time with that and intro. if you could talk to Einstein would you ask him about his socks? DD starts at 4:08.

vanilaish Also, the interviewer says "mmhmm" all the time which sounds like he's bored or doesn't give a shit.

+Kalum Batsch - I think he's out of his depth, as I would be, and he's falling back on non-lexical conversation sounds to gather his thoughts or read the next question.

Sure, but the tone of his "mmhmm" really sounds like "yeah, whatever". Maybe he doesn't really notice this.

David Deutsch should chat with Prof John Gray. David needs to be enlightened on human progress! He holds on to a religious belief in it. He speaks repeatedly of “We” as humans. There has never been, isn’t now, and won’t ever be a ‘we’.

are you nuts? there is! The ultimate reality can never exist through a belief of one man alone.
