Great interview too. Best I've seen with Deutsch. You allowed him to talk and think through his stories fully, whilst asking good questions to keep the conversation flowing. Difficult job to do considering the topic matter.
Agreed - a really great interview. Though I hesitate to rate this on empirical observation alone. Maybe I should internally conjecture an explanation for why I enjoyed this so much!!
I think the reason why progress in underlying theories (like popper's philosophy, or say Everett with quantum mechanics) is refusing to take hold amongst the majority, is because of exactly the process you laid down about there being no foundation. It means for most people, the "competing" theories seem sufficient for what they are doing, so they don't subject them to criticism because they don't see the problem. For those that really do see the deeper problem, they then have the openness to let these competing ideas come into conflict (don't just buy into one as an ideology) and then people can shift. So basically there is progress in ideas, but as there are multiple active branches of current understanding, only when people see a need to evaluate and switch branches does creativity / and criticism have a chance to kick in and refute previously held ideas.
Just curious, how many people are here out of an interest in science or David Deutsch and how many are here out of an interest in political philosophy or Popper?
I just found this gold mine. I came for Popper and just now learned about David Deutsch. We're going over 420 ppm CO2 and headed for oblivion, So much for the Open Society and its enemies!
Globalisation is an interesting spanner in the works though. For example China is authoritarian, but it has access to the many lessons learned in the west (by our numerous mistakes), to then implement that which worked the best at solving it's current problem. Perhaps this only delays the inevitable, since eventually the set of problems that were not encountered under modern democratic regimes would grow large enough for everything to crumble.
I know. This is a timid approach which makes me sad. I want great thinkers to stand up strongly against the corporate agenda and their 100 MK Ultra chess moves.
Yes! I'm like a kid in a candy store whenever there's a fresh David Deutsch interview. Thanks!
You bet!! Very inspiring and uplifting character.
And 3 years later - may I ask, has anything changed?
@@Wouldntyouliketoknow2 no, still search for new Deutsch videos regularly

Loved this interview! It is wonderful to hear someone who understands Popper and can add too and amplify them constructively!
Excellent interview!!! It is rare to hear this quality of conversation regarding these types of ideas.
Great to finally find someone current that is seriously discussing Popper. Thank you.

Exactly, really excellently done. Also allowed for an on-ramp for beginners as well as some depth for fans.

I'm extremely grateful for this interview!
Wonderful interview with David Deutsch. Made me understand his philosophy and Popper better. Thanks.
Fabulous interview. Really learned a lot. Popper’s ideas make sense in a deeper way.
The horizon and the reach of the explanations are so extensive and compelling. Thanks for this interview.
More popper more deutsch !!!
Every once in a while one stumbles upon a jewel navigating the web. This is one of them.
Fantastic interview. Thank you ❤

Thanks for your podcast, I think it is pretty good and it's good Popper's ideas are getting a bit more exposure.
Can you list a reading cue? That would help.
David Master Deutsch !

Science or David Deutsch, then political philosophy, then Popper

Wonderful podcast! Thanks!
Please read David's books and have him on again
Thanks for the content though, still appreciate it! There's just a lot more to be said.
Excelsior!
All species do not “go” extinct; many and all that exist today generally “evolve” . DNA knowledge is conserved over time.
can you explain what you mean and what knowledge you bring in your conclusion
