Wonderful Progress! I've been hard a working on the 2 LNER V's I am almost done making the boilers, The tenders are nearly complete. The chassis are a few weeks work of running on air. Love the progress. Cheers mate!
Looking good now mate, great set up for the smoke box adapter ring on the lathe, I so miss being a turner, and a miller and a grinder. I worked in a millwrights section in a ball bearing factory, we did all sorts of mad one off jobs, some crazy set up's, happy days...Allen.
Thanks Allen. To be honest, the times when you need devise something out of the ordinary to complete the job are the most satisfying. It would have been the easy option to take it to a bigger lathe but thanks to the virus I had to use the grey matter for once!!! YES Big rings are a challenge. I get a new boiler for a 5 inch Hunslet which is 6 1/4 inches outside diameter plus 3/8 each side for a flange. 5/8 thick steel. Using the thin 4 jaw it was 2 mm too thick in front of the bed? I milled this out and it fitted. turned down to the jaws and I moved it out again. Then could finish it off. The middle will become a new wheel tyre.
That was weird. I watched your first video yesterday on the smokebox door and were dead chuffed with that and then later in the morning I got a notification of what I thought was another video. Blimey I thought he's cracking on with things, but it was the notification for the smokebox door video. Somewhat disappointed I plodded on with the rest of my day and then low and behold another video did turn up. Happy Days! Anyway it's coming on a treat well done. Keep Safe.
Great workmanship, Always look forward to the next video,, A word on fixing your boiler thou, You will find that the boiler will move for and aft when in steam from expansion ,It move's about 1/8 on mine , You can see this when looking at the cladding near the cab front, and it returns when cold, Most boilers are just resting on the pad's and move in the smokebox, and are retained on the rear by the expansion brackets not pins or bolts.
Thank you Gary. Only the very front of this boiler is retained fore and aft on the front boiler support. All of the boiler from here backwards is free to expand and contract. Previous video shows expansion brackets at rear between frames and boiler foundation ring.

Started to watch these a few days ago and I’ve found them fascinating to see you build this fine loco. I must admit the 9F is one of my favourite steam locomotives. Percentage wise how far are you away from completing this wonderful model?
Craig, Had you though of using a steel mandrel and beating the smoke box into a more perfect round using that mandrel. It is a technique used to make and finish organ pipes. Yes, the allor is softer but the principal is one of cold forging.

Ohhh she's looking good Craig mate did I spot the chimney and blast pipe casting on the bench. This is the part I've been waiting for looking forward to part two already. I'm on stripping paint and grease on the chassis one of those jobs you wish you never started lol

@@no23mk2 if you dont know mate where all doomed the brit has the pipe coming up out of the cylinders and almost round the smokebox and down into the bottom of the blast pipe and the drawings my grandfather left have a choke upto the chimney how I'm going to do that is beyond me it looks as tho I could have it snug into the chimney but I need a lathe and the skill I lack both lol really cant wait to see how you tackle it especially with a double chimneys still I'll learn as you do picked up a good book today called model steam engines for beginners it should keep me busy until you next video mate
Thanks Paul. Yes the boiler will have a layer of insulation which will then be covered by a wrapper (cladding). The small step on the outside diameter of the boiler ring is where the wrapper will locate. Cheers Craig

Hi Robert, I use a Sievert propane torch for most silver soldering and heating work. I also have an oxy-propane torch for the bigger jobs needing more heat. I will be using both when I eventually get round to soldering the vertical boiler.

Get yourself some Harris Black High Temp Brazing flux, It comes premixed in 1lb jars for 10gbp it is the greatest flux ever I've quite literally thrown my white flux in the garbage after using that.
Would like to give it a go. Where did you see it for 10 quid a lb? Over here seems to be around £26 per 1/2 lb! imported. Cant find a UK stockist. Cheers Craig.
@@TKS60163 I meant to say that it IS for riding, and that any engines in 3.5", 5", and 7.25" are always for riding,... Some people at the club I go to use r/c controls for the throttle and stuff on smaller engines but you still need to be able to hand-fire the engine from onboard

I think that the train. Your making is amazing Really. But to make it a bit more interesting. Liven it up a bit. The smoke box door. With the 10 inch radius. I would yous a 10 or 11 inch bar stock. M A foot note.. I think that that the train is truly amazing. Really M
Thanks Mark. I'm pleased you're liking the loco, but I'm not in the business of making exciting videos. I simply record bits and pieces of my loco project for anyone that might be interested.
How someone makes turning on a lathe more interesting god only knows but just so you know people that are watching these videos are entertained by learning and seeing a locomotive being built peace by peace. There is also people like me that are learning little by little to work on my own locos. I personally would watch each part turned milled and drilled in actual speed just to learn more lol dont change a thing Craig not that I think you would

@@no23mk2 I was often called a weirdo playing with toy trains as they put they been my mates since I started watching your channel and others plucked up courage to rebuild my grandfather locos they was round all the time one has since got his own and wanting to build a track in his garden but yeah its surprising how many are like minded once you get talking and what I love about this hobby is that everyone is always more than will to help and give advice and no oneupmanship every one likes they habby for what it is and that's love for engineering and locos whether big or small and I'm glad you have carried on posting videos mate helped me tonnes with the Britannia
Well said Mark. I for one have been called a lot worse! Do what you enjoy and don't worry about what folk might think. This hobby is interesting and absorbing on so many levels. As you say - genuine people with no oneupmanship. Could be worse - could be down the golf club discussing how to hit a little white ball around a field with a bunch of social climbers!

Hi Robert. I did consider 'persuading it' but didn't want to risk cracking the joint especially as it will be totally hidden on the completed loco.

this has been bugging me since you started this project can you sit on the tender and ride it or is it just for running without someone on it?
Engines 3.5" gauge and above are almost always used for riding, so yes

Yes you could do it that way but the casting came with the rest of the loco castings so I used it.
