  • What an amazing place to explore! The Cascade Creek trail from Monarch Lake is absolutely stunning. Once again, the Indian Peaks Wilderness did not let us down. Waterfalls, cascading creeks, deer, moose, wildflowers and wild views only begin to describe this place. The trail intersects several times to further destinations that only keep getting better. Buchanan Pass, Pawnee Pass, Crater Lake and Lone Eagle Peak beckon to the hiker to come explore further.

How far in was your second campsite? Doing this trip in a couple days with my 9 year old and was looking for options if we don’t make it the whole way to crater lake.

We'd recommend camping at the split for Buchanan Pass, the second campsite is buried in downed trees currently. See our latest video for the Pawnee - Buchanan Loop, tried using the same campsite and it was quite disheartening...doable...but lots of downed trees.

Looks like a nice shady campsite! How far in was it? I am going to enter at Monarch Lake Trailhead and want to find a good spot to set up

Our first campsite was about 2 miles in, near the Buchanan trail intersection. There are many level campsites in this area and great access to water. Our next campsite was about 4 miles in, where there is a waterfall and a few level campsites. We were in no hurry to go anywhere and were exploring the area. Can't wait to get back and see more. Plenty of water, wildlife and places to camp and explore. Side trips up the Buchanan Pass trail, Pawnee Pass trail, Mirror Lake and Lone Eagle Peak make this a great overnight or multi-night outing.

Indeed! She loves going with us. Everytime we grab our gear she starts dancing and then sits on our packs like, " you're not going without me" 😎🐾

I'd love to know your camera equipment...Are you using a gimbal? Super smooth walking shots!

Thank you, Drew. This video was shot using a Canon 70d mounted on an Evo Rage 2 Gimbal. The gimbal really makes a huge difference for smoothing things out. Of late we are actually trying out the GoPro Hero 7 Black with built in stabilization that is pretty good, and much much lighter to carry on trail. We plan on using it on our Colorado Trail thru hike this summer. Check out our "Preparing for the Colorado Trail" playlist to see videos using the GoPro. We have been happy with both setups, though we'd say the Evo gimbal does a better job.

Great video. Why did you not go all the way to Crater lake? It looked like you where almost there.

It was a bummer, we were feeling under the weather the night before and hoped it would pass by morning. Unfortunately it did not and we had to cut the trip short. We can't wait to go back and see Crater Lake, Lone Eagle Peak and a side trip to Pawnee Lake. The waterfalls and wildlife were amazing!
