Im not trying to be a jerk, here. I just want people with less experience to not spend big money on "uber gear" before they hear good suggestions.
A guitar set-up by someone that's a Pro is mandatory or it will just screw with you. They can get things to stay in tune that you want to kill... that guy should be your best friend. : )
You will never get a good tone without enough practice to understand how to play things so you (and other folks, by extension) like how it sounds and be able to sustain it for very long. There's no gear cure that gets around it, just like the earth isnt flat. Billions of People believe in silly myths, what can i say? Its not my fault, just I really want guitarists to not get caught up in myths.
There are two things that are scientifically proven to affect the tone that is coming out of the amp. Everything else doesn't to much of a degree, beyond subjective feelings and experiments that are not well Controlled. The first is the speakers. If they are bunk or they aren't for the style of music you want to be playing... you wont like the experience and thats not going to help you get motivated to get the Hours. Find out what speakers the guitar players you want to learn the songs by have (on that specific song) and you're most of the way. In hard rock you're probably gonna want celestions, blues you want jensens. Beyond that I dont have that much first hand experience. You can get there with modeling software easily if you start there, but some speakers just don't work for some stuff. i can tell u fender speakers are never gonna make you happy if you want to play punk and metal. If you're playing extreme metal you need those speakers. The second thing is that non completely sealed finishes vs completely sealed finishes affects it. If it's sealed, then tonewood, blah, blah, whatever... doesn't matter. Just play ELECTRIC, it's less complicated. Everyone's got digital amps out that simulate all the effects and do it for electric and acoustic. some even do bass, too. I liked my old line 6 stuff, but i love my I can't even say which brand, publically cuz there is a legit cult (meaning, they ARE worth following and we do cuz we know but a LOT of the appeal is that the prices always stayed low. lol) that has followed them since early 70s. Every time someone tries to sell something, the price just goes nuclear

@@ScratchySlide I was guitar center buying some strings a while back. And there was some kid maybe 12 or so with his mom and a guitar. I could overhear them talk. I guess mom and dad bought him a guitar found out you have to practice or it doesnt work. I couldnt help the temptation. I turned around and looked at them both and said, " What, you mean you thought you just gonna wake up one morning a rockstar"? His mom looking like she could use some sideline encouragement right away says, "Yep. Thats exactly what he thought". I told him its there, but theres three things to consider. You have to practice like you want it, your luck better shine as well. And most importantly. Is that the life you really want? I'll be homest with you. I dont think you do. Not that you cant. Its what you haven't seen yet. And if you're not willing to practice without being told, its already too late. You haven't sold the guitar yet, but you probably would be happier with an X box. He said," well what about you?" "I chased a dream that never happened. By the time I realized it, I was hooked on music and older than dirt. I didn't really want the fame. The moneys cool, but Im a one girl kinda guy. But nothing, NOTHING is better than playing a mean solo, even if nobodys there. Its not only a sense of accomplishment, but Knowing that came from you makes all the daily hours of practice worth it." Are you sure you dont wanna tell the guy you want the intonation adjusted, or you give up?" I seriously played the car sales routine beautifully. But I saw his and mom walk out to the car empty-handed. Maybe he did tell the guy he wanted it adjusted, but I doubt it.
I did ask him before I left if he recorded any of his playing . He said no. Too bad
Because everytime you play, you get better
But you wont notice it because its gradual. Most people quit because the think theyve made no progress. Thats usually not true. Record yourself so everytime you feel you're not getting anywhere, pull out that recording and get ready to feel good again.

I ended up looking at used ones, because most who kept them, had the Bigsby fixed, got better tuners and other upgrades, and they’re sold for not much more than a new one, that may or may not need $400+ in upgrades.

Hey man. I can honestly say, both West Creek guitars I got from you, the 333 and the LP Junior style, both play and feel great. The M Musi plays awesome, and I keep it next to my desk all the time. It has become my "goto" guitar to grab when I want to work something out etc... the only issue I had (and you know because I popped in to your gig one night to grab a string tree from you) was the lack of break angle on the B and E strings. I used the M Musi at a country rehearsal, tuned to standard 440, and had zero issues. It sounded and played great! But that weekend, I used it at a gig, where we played everything from country to SRV, and we tune a 1/2 step down. With that reduction in string tension, it made the difference, and the fact that I am always playing open strings, the E and B strings kept popping out on me. The string tree fixed it 100%. They should have one installed on all their guitars out of the box. But for the price and the quality you get, I will gladly install my own any day. I might have to chat with you on that white Tele style... I might have to grab that one too. lol. Cheers Buddy!

Quit putting yourself down for your playing and I want that guitar. There is a list of reasons why somebody would send it back. Some snob buddy bugged them because it wasn't an Fen' . It doesn't have the lipstick neck pickup. They don't like the locking tuners. They used a cheap and S#!Ty chord that was likely defective. They had a low quality amp and this beautiful guitar didn't make it sound like a million bucks. They think they prefer heavier and/or lighter strings. They are stupid and they just ordered it for laughs. They got it, a buddy heard about it and flogged one they were trying to get rid of. They wanted a more antiqued white. Yes, the "high" action could have been it. It doesn't have all those crunches and klicks the Fends' on the wall have so they think there is something wrong with it. Maybe they didn't like that sexy cutout on the head or thought it was broken. They saw it and decided they didn't like the chome, preferring black. The sound was too clean. Daaa! It didn't come with a cheap and S#!Ty chord. I think that is enough for now.

I took a chance on one Westcreek guitar. It was awful. I got rid of it, and for next to nothing. And that was after spending a couple hours trying to set it up, and dialing it in. I finally got it to where it would (basically) play. And that's about it. It was terrible. And I am a budget-guitar lover. Bought bunches of them in general, and bunches of them off of The Zon. And I've been pretty lucky. But every once in a while, you're going to strike out if you play the game. I don't buy the M Musi Guitars. But it looks like they are a big step up from some of the others. But you also pay more for them. So they should be pretty good. My 2 cents.

Hang on.... You made all those judgements about why people returned these guitars before you even looked at the guitars???? Like you presumed they were stupid before you even checked the guitar? Thats mental and it all sucks of something disingenuous. You know full well if neck was broken it would be returned. To base a video on why people are returning guitars to Amazon before you even look at why - is just pure crazy and makes no sense whatsoever.

    • @j-man9457
      @j-man9457  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Woah easy there captain negative! I own multiple Musis and WestCreek guitars. Just look at my video list before making Blunt assumptions. I also have been buying guitars and and playing guitars for over 35 years. I have never received a Musi or WestCreek that was so bad that it needed to be returned. In fact I have sold quite a few of these from my own collection so I could buy more of them and every single person who bought one was super impressed with them. So no, unlike you, I wasn't calling anyone stupid. My title was simply to see if I could come up with a physical, structural or performance related reason as to why someone who ordered a guitar like this would end up returning it. Then the goal was, if I did find an obvious issue, to try and fix it as to help others fix similar issues on their guitars... These guitars are fantastic period. Anyone who says otherwise has just been conditioned to believe if it doesn't say Fender or Gibson on the head stock that it's no good. It's fine but I don't think that. And I've played enough Teles in my day to know a good one when I see one.
Obviously had I opened the box and the headstock or neck was broken, it would of made for a short video! “Oh look guys, the neck is broken, returning it was a good choice!“ the end!
But I was going on the assumption that this guitar was as good as the ones I currently own and have reviews in past videos... My assumption was right! It is. It's actually better than mine. Mine needed more work than this one to set up. I know without a doubt that whoever returned it will not find a better spec-ed guitar for under 500$. Not here in Canada anyways!!
I explain all of this in part to during my conclusion at the end. So before belittling and making accusations towards people who's values and intentions you know nothing about, do your research, watch a few videos and then comment! Jeepers!

@@j-man9457 I am sorry - Its crazy to say all this like I am being mean. Your video had a title - and the way in which the video ran implied that peope were sending guitars back to Amazon for no reason. If you think about it - the video is entirely pointless. LITERALLY pointless. If the video had been " I love these guitars and here is why" - Well that would make total sense - but to say " Why are people returning them to Amazon?". One question I would ask is "How do you know they were returned to Amazon?". What was the process for you knowing they had been returned and surely if they had been returned and there was a process to inform you of the return - you would have been notified of why they had been returned and being sold on to you. None of this is explained in the video and just seems really odd. I have used Amazon for years and have no awareness of a service they offer selling returned goods - but maybe they do? If they do then it would be useful to know -and useful to tell the viewer. If there is no such service then how did you know they were returned? Reading your reply, it seems that they werent in fact returned at all and the title was some kind of doorway into talking about them? Look - Its all very odd and I am just being honest. I watched the video with genuine interest because the title suggested to me I was going to find out why people were returning a guitar - Its in my line of work - so its interesting. However you want to reply in the sensitive way you have done - I am the viewer of the video - for whom its intended - and you have created a video with a misleading title (for all the best intentions I am sure) - in order to do whatever it is you do - and you have implied people return guitars for no good reason - I am pretty sure thats what you were implying - If I watch it back. Considering it APPEARS you are now saying they werent returned guitars and the whole situation is hyperthetical then its crazy you would be talking about why people return guitars unnecessarily as if you are looking for problems with the guitar. For what its worth, I literally cannot find any reference to the model - name - anything - price? If you love them and want to promote how great they are - I am personally still completely oblivious to what the guitars are. I am not a negative person - I merely gave feedback on the basis that I felt the title was misleading - and you have explained in essence that it was. So I will leave you to it and sorry to have upset you.

@@RichardsGuitarshop sorry man I may have misunderstood your intention... I can't tell you how the whole return process works as I don't know... But this guitars came up as “try used like new“ below the listing after you click on the thumbnail... I have bought tons of stuff on Amazon that way in the past. You save money but it's a gamble as you don’t know what you're getting. The box was beat up and retaped... Pretty obvious it was used. I save 150$ish, the pickguard still has plastic on it but it is covered in pick / nail scratches so this thing was obviously played and the inside packaging was torn. I may not be as good a guitar tech as you but I can certainly tell the difference between a used and new guitar. I own a few hahaha
This thing was definitely returned. When it landed, we were going through funeral prep for my mother in law's passing... Guitar sat in the box in my basement for the last 3 weeks. I told my wife, I wonder why someone would return this? I have several musis. They are all fantastic. Keepers for sure... So curious, I titled my video why do people return these...... You know the rest. I seriously don't know what you could buy or build for this price even new, that would be as good! So I wanted to see if there was a serious problem with it and there absolutely isn't! So the reason for the return is a personal one and not a structural one.... Still not 100% percent sure why you care.... As a luthier why are you watching videos on Amazon guitars anyway?,,😉
It's not uncommon that you haven't heard of these as to my knowledge they have only been in North America for the last year and a half.
Since this video, I can't find a single Musi on Amazon. I'm in Canada so Amazon.ca... not sure where you're from... I have been checking amazon for the last 2 days and they are gone. I assume they are out of stock but who knows maybe they had a falling out with Amazon or they went out of business....
Here in Canada a brand new Classic T style is 485! I can't even buy a Roasted maple neck with Stainless Steel frets and a compound radius for that here let alone a complete guitar!
I hope they haven't closed up shop!!! I have emailed amazon to see if I can get answers. If I do, I'll post a video on that too and I'm sure some people will get upset over it but oh well! The title sorry to say, is not directed towards you... The people who follow my channel, god bless em, know I love these guitars, they know I have every model Musi makes and they understand my title as they know I would never return one of these, as they ARE that good!
That's it man don't read more into it! I'm not on here to make money or to sell you gear. If you get curious and buy something I shared so be it. Only the manufacturers and Amazon make money on it, not me hahaha.
Not all of my reviews are good. Check my Jet guitar series or the budget groove guitar review I did. I'm always looking for something that will be better out of the box than these Musis but I haven't come across anything yet that comes close dollar for dollar.
      Anyway,
You take care, I wish you all of the best with Richard's guitar shop, and if you think your guitars can rival these musis, send me a link, I'll buy one and review/promote it on my channel. And don't worry, I won't return it :-)

@@j-man9457 I find it hard to disagree with what you've written here, but "slim C shape with 9.5 to 12 radius" doesn't say anything about thickness nor width of the neck at different points. It also assumes the buyer is experienced.
A fraction of a millimetre over the neck width can make a significant difference to how it feels in the hands, and I think it's impossible to know if it's a good fit until you've spent some time playing it.
Whether this is why somebody bought/returned a perfectly good guitar is anyone's guess. Maybe it was an unwanted gift, or the colour of the guitar didn't quite match their decor when they opened the box 🧐. I enjoyed your video and your playing in any case mate 👍

I know why they returned it. They couldn't play it the way you can. They then settled for the $89 Aamoon that sounded just as good to them. When you go out and get a good guitar and you are just learning to play the $89 guitar just makes more sense. I personally can't play worth a dam so maybe they are in my shoes and not yours. Secondly, it is still worth thinking about the meaning of the information being transmitted. We all understood that these guitars were returned. But why they were returned, we still do not know. And of course, then it is logical to show some meanings. Precisely meanings, and not playing on a guitar that does not break anything. But there are questions. Do these guitars sound good with a clean sound, through a powerful tube amplifier? Do these guitars have natural wood sustain, again, it is desirable to hear with a clean sound. Do these guitars hold the tuning well. What is the scale length of these guitars and are there enough neck adjustments.....well, and many other questions that would be of interest to potential owners of such guitars. People return low to moderate price guitars for many reasons, and not necessarily because the guitars are defective. For example, I think it's indisputable that many guitar players are extremely fussy/picky about certain things peculiar to them. And if they pick up a guitar and it doesn't immediately appeal to them for whatever picayune reason, they're done with them. Amazon lets them get away with this. And what about Aunt Susie, who buys her nephew Johnny an Amazon guitar for his 21st birthday because she heard he plays guitar - so she buys him *a* guitar, not knowing Johnny is been in several bands over the years and already has good gear for specific reasons. Johnny's probably not going to hang onto that thing just to please his aunt. So back to Amazon it goes. And so it goes. On and on. Nothing to do with the guitars themselves. Just the logistics of Amazon facilitating the return of product for basically any reason. I'm not finding fault with Amazon - they can adopt any return policy they wish. It's just the nature of many guitar players.

7:19 Strum an open chord so we can hear it as you turn the volume and tone up and down. If they're scratchy, that's when you'll hear it.
Also for the hum, it can be generated in one or both of two ways. One is magnetic from a power transformer in equipment picked up by a single-coil pickup as you were trying to demonstrate (the closer to the transformer the louder the hum, and the guitar's angle with the sourcealso affects volume), the other is electrostatic, which you can hear with "high gain" (lotta distortion) and NOT touching the strings or any metal hardware on the guitar. If you get hum the second way, it needs the control and pickup cavities shielded.

I agree, maybe because of the break angle issue. I have a Sire T-3 Tele, also with no string trees, and the high E string pops out all the time. I would have string trees installed on it, but the guitar doesn’t sound or play anywhere near good enough to spend a dime on it. It’s a “trade-it-in-at-guitar-center-for-$100 bucks” paper weight. What is the big deal about having a string tree to begin with, so there’s no chance of that problem? Tuning stability? On a Tele? No, nobody should have to deal with strings popping out of the nut, and that problem can get much worse if the string gauge is changed from tens to nines.
Also could be the neck radius (if it’s not 9.5”). I returned (on Amazon) a fantastic sounding and superb quality Vola brand, made-in-Japan Tele-ish (forgot the model name) guitar because it had a 12” radius that I hated.
Could be the neck carve - maybe it’s too “baseball bat” feeling. That can really fatigue some people’s hands. It could be something else about the neck carve that the person didn’t like. You fail to mention some very important specs.
Is the back of the neck satin? Really fast and slippery?I HATE fast, satin necks. I’m used to, and, I like a neck with a coating on it; It’s not as fast, which is a good thing for me, and I use the back of the neck for friction so I can hold certain stretches without slipping.
Does the fingerboard have rolled edges? Are the edges “too” rolled? I don’t like the way my Sire T-3 rolled edges feel even though their rolled edges are patented and called “Edgeless”. I guess I like edges.
Could be be the stainless steel frets. I prefer nickel frets (and so does Paul Reed Smith) over stainless steel. Just a feel thing, although I would be inclined to try and deal with that, as long as they were “medium jumbo” and not “narrow-tall” (ugh) or extra-jumbo (ugh).
And last, I didn’t hear any drop dead gorgeous clean tone like one would get from a good sounding Tele in the middle position (both pickups) playing a few lush jazz chords into a blues junior or other Fender tube amp with a little delay and a touch of reverb. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it though, I just didn’t hear it.

@@jayaz7781 hey thanks for the detailed comment. I'm surprised about the Sire. I hear they are really good... Glad to hear from someone who has one!
This Musi did not need a string tree. Strings were not popping out on this one. However even with Staggered tuners, which this one has, there just isn't enough break angle behind the nut on a fender style, straight headstock, with 6 on a side tuners, so I installed one on the E & B strings.
Radius on these is compound. 9.5 to 12. Great for chording down low and soloing up top🙂
Neck is a slim C shape. Fretboard does not have rolled Edges. They are smooth and not square, but not rolled over like on some guitars I've seen.
Neck is not sprayed with a satin finish or a thick poly finish which I hate. These necks are Roasted. Not too slippery and definitely not Sticky!
Frets are SS yes, super smooth, highly polished, feel like you're bending on glass and they are medium Jumbo.
Sorry no Jazz chords here. I'm not good enough for that😕

This is a very informative video for those who are planning on buying a guitar full stop. In my country, namely England UK, if you are competent enough to be able to suss out the neck and fingerboard on the instrument, if you try to use the technique demonstrated here, you will NOT be welcome in most Music Stores on this island. Trust me, I've been doing it for fifty years. Only the last few guitars I've bought, other than one I was given, have come up to full expectations. These include Squiers, Ibanez and the only two Gibsons I own. A 2005 Les Paul Standard, and by far the best, a 2008 Melody Maker. The neck and fretboard on that instrument are unsurpassed by any other I've owned. But hey. I only got hold of this in February, so it's taken that many years to have the confidence to know what I'm doing.

I mod a lot, and can achieve a high standard from a "budget guitar" for much less than the stupid prices people pay for imaginary tone wood etc. If you set a Squier up just the same as a custom shop Fender, replacing the bad bits, logically it will play just as well, there is NO magic. The difference is in the set up. Pickups are personal preference, not "good and bad"

You don't even know if its a counterfeit guitar and as we all know the Chinese love their counterfeits!....Taiwan was TW now they start with a CY. It really should start with C.R.A.P! lol

I don't agree... My wife is Chinese and she is absolutely fantastic. 😍 There are some crappy Chinese guitars just like there are crappy American ones too! They are wood and metal. And these Musis are exceptionally well put together!

J-Man, we're probably about the same age. After decades of teaching guitar in music stores, thousands of gigs, guitar shows, etc, etc, I can tell you that people return *GREAT* guitars for seriously dumb reasons. They often keep crap guitars for seriously dumb reasons. You will *never* discern the reason these people returned killer guitars. I know that I've profited greatly from buying great guitars that foolish people returned, passing the savings on to me!
So what was the brand of that first guitar? I love cheap guitars. Like Jack Pearson and other pros, I've discovered the joys of cheap guitars that are *GREAT* I have several pro level playing instruments that were stupid cheap which others ditched.

Great post and playing. Check out the Fireflys at Guitars Garden and buy new even cheaper. Possibly they tried it out and it just wasn't for them....or like others said they saw it reviewed and thought they would magically sound like the reviewer without actually having the skill. I picked up a Firefly strat on sale with a flamed Canada roasted maple neck, locking tuners, bone nut, rosewood fretboard, stainless steel ball end frets, Alnico V pickups and a korean made bridge for $169 plus $27 shipping. The finish is flawless and it didn't need a setup. Sometimes you get a lemon, but lately these Chinese knock offs have been great. I'm not a professional musician or a gear snob so I can't justify paying up to 10 times more for a guitar that isn't 10 times better just because of the name or where it was made. If the big names want my business they need to stop their ridiculous price gouging. I know they can't compete with the lower labor costs and possibly the materials cost the Chinese have, but they could do much better on their prices if not for greed. When the Chinese step up their quality control the big names will really be in a bind.

It's insane, whatever that guitar costs I can't help but wonder what people are wanting for their money. Are they just spoilt? Are they expecting it to sound the way you make it sound without years of playing? They return it because they can surely, meanwhile instrument making in the west become less viable for any luthier, we send oodles of our hard earned money to communist nations next thing you know in the blink of an eye we're living in Rush 2112.. So unfortunately only 8 days since you posted this video, these M Musi guitars are listed as “currently unavailable” on Amazon. And it says that they are not sure when or if they’ll become available again. You’re a great guitar player, I subscribed immediately after you started playing and I heard that you can really play well. I had just watched a bunch of other TH-cam demos of pedals by others where the playing was average so it was refreshing to find your channel. I do lots of country gigs so I appreciate the chicken pickin style you’re demonstrating in this video. What amp and pedals did you use in this demo?

I bought a MANNIX guitar which even my very musical neighbour couldn't get to tune so the company sent me another (keep the old one they said) the second one arrived broken in two snapped right at the neck/body so probably rough handling by couriers, I was told to keep both and got my money back! If you can already play, you can make it work. If you're a beginner, the low end guitar is where you learn how to make it work. Some of the bargain guitars are pretty darn good. Some, like a 3/4 size bass I bought for $125 have fish hooks and razor blades for fret ends and rattle like a tin can with marbles in it.
