@@TheSailingFrenchman I hope my comment on the previous episode about the southern route being faster didn't hit too hard - I was talking climatology not about the weather report you had. It's entirely possible that your route could have been faster given the info you had. I don't get weather reports at sea, so I use climatology and some basic meteorology.

If one of your goals is to inspire than I want to say you have inspired this sailor in ways you cannot imagine. I bought a classic mini transat boat and I have been enjoying it immensely.
If one of your goals was to show this great race to more people than I want to say that I have been glued to every video that I can understand (I can’t speak french) about the mini trasnat and all the great names that came from this regatta and rest assured I’ll be watching again.
If one of your goals was to teach then I want to say I have changed a lot on my boat because of the technical videos you have taken the time to make.
If one of your goals is to show people how little you need to cross the pond and to stop making excuses then I can say I also removed the toilet on my mini because Hugo doesn’t have one. Other boaters beware of my floaters! 💩
I hope I speak on behalf of sooooo many. You inspired, taught, enlightened and brought joy to us. I will forever be a huge fan of this channel. Thank you Hugo.

The notification ping woke me up and I watched instead of going back to sleep because you're always worth watching. Taking chances or choices that either mean you're there with the winners or losers is part of going for it; but finishing in the middle with the people who play safe would be a pisser for me and I'd prefer to be angry with myself than listen to the "never mind, next time, taking part..." voices of friends - even if they're right. So obviously I'm not going to be in the chorus of never mind Hugo, you did well and so on - I'm too selfish for that - I want to see you stay on the edge and make me watch what you post immediately rather than watch when I have nothing better to do.

Like many others, I have watched your transition from a cruising sailor in the Caribbean, via delivery skipper, to experienced racer. You have skills and abilities that most of us, still in the cruising category, envy. In addition, you can communicate the events and emotions of an offshore sailor. Oh my sweet Hugo, I follow you a year now, and I started with your video's where you fixed up your first boat, the equeme du mer, where you sailed with your pappa over the atlantic with it. You were proud and happy then. You enjoyed sailing. Why on earth are you getting into racing? What is the fun in it? If you come there first or second or 20, so what? You crossed the atlantic on your own on a 21 foot sailboat. That is an achievement in itself. Greetings from the Netherlands.

I feel for ya on the down side.
There is a famous American sailor named Buddy Melges.
He has a saying that it's very easy to get down on your self so you have to stay positive. You have to train yourself to stay positive.
You still raced extremely hard knowing your approximate position. 👏👏👏

To even make it to the start line of such a race is an incredible achievement.
To complete the race, even more so.
Racing yachts at the mercy of nature is never fair whether you win or lose you always know that chance plays its part. Every experience and piece of knowledge gained is another step toward being a successful sailor and being a successful racing sailor does not mean that you win every race. I'm sure there are many who never win anything.
    Thanks As always Hugo.
Need to let us know what your plans are next.

Sure, it would have been cool if your first time you were way up there, but you will be. Carry on. The Squid.

Whenever anyone is in a competition race there is a certain mixture of your experience & knowledge as well as intuition & a matter of fact decision 50/50 of the first 2 & last 2 to winning any type of race competitively. When I did Velodrome racing & long distance racing as a cyclist I had to put myself into a 100% pure absorption of going through the race in my head whether it be a 2 mins 50 second 1000m timetrial or a 6 hour 200+ km road race where I would imagine all possibilities that could or would happen & have actionable reactions to everything as well as seeing myself cross the finish line first. If you're going into a race just to do your best & that's it then get out of the race cause you are never going to win it. It's not about believing you can win it's about being so arrogant that you know that you are going to win & that no one can beat you. This is what makes a winner, everything else less than that is a waste of your time & effort as it leads you to beating yourself up because of failure.

I am not experienced on the longer format, but I do know that managing tactics vs strategy in the short term is a discipline. One can be quite dogmatic about both at times. I think it’s important to keep both firmly in mind when making decisions. Sailboat racing is often really a game of “bunts and singles” more than “ home runs”. You definitely know both as I have seen you demonstrate both. The balance is difficult in managing them and not allowing the prospect of a large bet paying too big relative to the fleet. You know this and you are gaining that experience while also having some fun. I consider that a win. Now, keep building on it all! Fair winds and following seas!

    • @Early8Q

I should add that I am writing with no knowledge of you finish position or your position relative to those whom you view as your competition.

But I would be proud to pitch in again for the next race if you try again!

So, the South option paid off in the Minitransat, but in the Transquadra it was the exact opposite... surely Luck also plays its part! From my little racing experience, sticking with the pack is safer from a tactical point of view, lone wolf tactics are more risky, especially if in the pack some of the sailors know the race or couse already. You gave it your best, you filmed it all, you made it to the otherside... learn from it, have no regrets, be proud of your achievement 😎

No need for self doubt. You finished and not last place. The boats and sails are essentially identical so slight variations in skill level and routing made the difference. Look at your performance from the point where fleet split north/ south. Your finish is well within what you could expect from that point onward
    Better luck next time

As a friend of mine (who was in the systems engineering business, helping to create some of the first ATM networks) used to say: _"That_ was a _good idea._ Too bad it didn't work." In other words, don't get discouraged, keep swinging.
Ever hear of the stuff Dennis Connor used to get up to before he was an America's Cup skipper? Broaches, dismastings, running aground. You flipped a coin, called "heads" and it came up tails. That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. You'll soon come right.
