OsakaMaachan, this is Jay writing back to you. What you write about Halloween is absolutely true, but it is also true of every other holiday celebrated in the United States with the exception of those that relate to America itself, like Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and Veterans Day - just to name a few. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.
Well I’m from the Netherlands and we celebrate “Sinterklaas”. It’s actually a sort of party for young children.Sinterklaas is a man from Spain and he comes to the Netherlands every November. He stays until “pakjesavond” ( the fifth of December) and then goes back to Spain (supposedly). He comes by boat and gives children sweets and presents. Sinterklaas also has got helpers that help pack in presents. When the evening starts those helpers get off the boat and go to houses where children live. They go in the houses by going through the chimney and leave presents and sweets in a shoe. Yes a shoe!! Children put their shoes at the fireplace. This’s our tradition. I hope you enjoyed this text Vicky and Jay. Yours sincerely, Marlon Nieuwkoop😃
That sounds like the US Christmas. A man from the north pole makes presents for all the good kids and has elf helpers. He also goes down the chimney and leaves things in your socks. He puts gifts under a tree that is decorated for him and the children leave him treats and milk
(i don't speak english,but..) Russia has a holiday and his name is "maslenitsa" or "pancake week". There is "guy-chuchelo" which is burned and later all people celebrate this holiday and people eat pancakes 🥞
Here in Brazil we've got the Saci Perere's day in 10/31, but pratically no one comemores this day here, and we mostly play Halloween, but we also got the Child's Day (10/12)
The new yar's day is my favourite holiday because i gather with relotives and friends, i think about my last year, remembering the mistakes and corret things that i do, setting goals for next year, and always making the same promise as always- i will lose weight.
Thanks for sharing this Erida. Incidentally, we both make exactly the same new years resolution in our house too. If you have any good tips for losing weight, please pass them along.
American here (Louisville, KY) and Halloween is my favorite. When I dress up for Halloween, I like to pick things from the culture that I love and most of my friends do too. I've dressed up as characters I like or people I admire. I most enjoy people who are very creative. We hold costume contests every year and that's always fun. This year, a friend of mine won dressed as Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, and she looked great! I also want to point out that it's not entirely uncommon to see adults dressed up at bars the weekend before Halloween. It's not uncommon to see people dressed up for weeks in advance either.
Hi Bish Boy. Thanks so much for sharing this. It's great to get more background. And you're quite right of course. We've seen adults dressed up in the bars in Philly at this time of year too.
Throughout the year we have diferent holidays, like the Círio-A religious (catholic celebration), the second sunday in October, all souls day, independence day of Brazil on September 7th and Halloween also that recenthly each more people celebrate.
In my culture, we use to make "guy" at the end of the winter. We burn it down because we want to chase away the winter, the "guy" symbolise the winter. We call this period "Farsang". It's like halloween, children dressing up like scary monsters to chase away the cold season and hope that the spring come soon. In the hungarian culture nowdays sadly started to forgetting this celebration.
When I was growing up in England in the 60s,70s and 80s, we didn't celebrate Halloween. That time of the year was dedicated to Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night. In the week before we would make a Guy and ask "penny for the guy." On 5th Nov we had a huge communal bonfire where all the guys would be burned and fireworks let off. Typical bonfire night food - jacket potatoes, sausages. Halloween has taken off here in the last 20 years as kids are exposed to more American customs via social media and TV programmes.
Hello, Vicki! I like Haloween! :) Next year I will make Jack'o Lantern! And I want to take a part in celebration one day! The only one Ukrainian tradition that I know is to burn a huge fire at night of Ivana Kupala 24 June. But except fire, there are some other rituals connected with water like a river or lake. And also it is said, it is possible to find a very powerful magical artifact "The Fern Flower" that night. But everyone knows that fern doesn't have flowers :)
In Germany we celebrate Reformation Day and All Hallow's Eve on Oct 31st and 1st Nov 1st. But we don't have special traditions on these days, if you're not religious. We do have huuuge bonfires every year on April 30. It's "Walpurgis night" or " Dancing in May". The bonfires, also called May fire, shall chase away bustling witches :) On this day we say Goodbye to the dark period of the year and welcome the brighter, sunny spring days and flowers! ♥ That's why another costum is to set up colorful Maypols and dancing aroung them. ♥
Ah, lovely! That sounds like a lot of fun. May sounds like a better time of year to be having bonfires too. It's always very cold on 5th November. Thanks so much for sharing this story Stefanie.
At my college, we used to have Maypole dancing on May Day (May 1). I remember how beautiful and how fun that was. Walpurgis Night sounds very exciting. :)
Ohhh, wonderful tradition parties. It is hard for me to pick what is the best one. Really interesting stories. In Brazil, we don't celebrate Halloween as an official Brazilian party. But I need to share something: here in my country we celebrate Easter and a day before this, we have "Sábado de Aleluia" (something like Hallelujah's Saturday). This day we make those human-shapped bodies (like your Guy Fawkes) and we hang them at the city trees or something and then people just hit them with sticks or set fire on them. We do that because in our tradition Judas betrayed Jesus and we kinda punish him, lol! It is really funny.
We can't celebrate Halloween in Iran (because the government doesn't allow), but we have a celebration called "Chaharshanbe Suri" which is celebrated at the last Wednesday night of the year (in Persian calendar). In this night, we do firework and jump over fire to be healthy (saying "my sickness and sadness for you, your heat and lighting for me") and are going to welcome to "Nowruz" holiday (which is celebrated in spring equinox and the beginning of the new year). In ancient times, we had something like "trick-or-treat" which is disappearing now, but we are trying to keep that alive. In this hobby, we go door to door and hit spoons to make a sound and like trick-or-treat, the landlord gives us candies, chocolates, rise and... Chaharshanbe Suri and Nowruz both are celebrated at least for 2500 years.
The Círio de Nazaré is a religious manifestation in devotion to our Lady of Nazareth. A time that the pepople of Pará become festive and welcoming and emotional.
Yes, I think it's a wonderful opportunity for manufacturers to sell more sweets. :-) But it's also a fun holiday. I do like the dressing up part of it.
Wow, I think both of them are marvelous. Peruvians like to celebrate Halloween. So, why don't we built a city on both of them. I could be the sheriff, hahaha.... Love you so much, Kisses.
Christian. Could you explain your questions "why don't we build a city on both of them.?". This is Jay writing and I was curious as to what you meant by that. Let us know when you get a chance.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos oh, hello Jay, good morning here in Peru. Well, I mean if we can have a city where both celebration, Halloween and guy fawkes, could be celebrated everyday. I think it could be wonderful.

Hi. Aparecido FERREIRA VAIS. This is Jay writing. October fest (Oktoberfest in German) is fun. There are some October fest celebrations in Philadelphia where we live. And Vicki and I were at the Munich OKtoberfest in Germany some years ago. But Halloween is for kids mostly, while October fest is definitely for adults who love good beer.
In my country, making a bonfire was kind of a tradition but I have rarely seen one😅 I like fireworks, it's sad that they're polluting but I hope there'll be ecological options to continue celebrating!
I'm actually not sure, even though people talk about this every year, my family has never done this or just once. I'm from Peru, South America and we 'do' a bonfire but in New Year's Eve. Here the tradition is burning the 'Old year' as a way of eliminating all bad events :o

I live in Canada but find Halloween boring other than getting to eat some left over junk foods at other people's houses or all the giveaway junk. Halloween food is typically awful yet it's good free munchies. Guy Fawkes night could be fun if you could do a bonfire and if there was an lots of food but it's more difficult if you live in cities and dangerous to do fireworks and bonfires. What's fun about Guy Fawkes is you can throw things you don't like in the bonfire such as old school report cards or tests you do didn't like the scores on.Or products that disappointed you with no resale value. Don't throw anything with resale value in the fire though or anything that would blow up if there was no open space outdoors. Funny to hear he's morphed into Trump in current celebrations, but very understandable. I loved hearing about this festival and thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Halloween is kind of celebrating the devil though. Zombies and skeletons are this demonic crap, and the holiday has its roots in pagan beliefs (something this video conveniently skirts around). With that being said, I kind of wish Guy Fawkes Night was a thing here in the states so I could actually celebrate it with people.
Hi MalachiCo0. In the US particularly, Halloween has become a very sectarian holiday and kids of all backgrounds enjoy putting on costumes and going out to ask neighbors and friends for candy. Its historic origins seem to be no longer part of the celebration. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.
