    here's an idea for your "frugal friday," you may have already done this a bit; get out your supplies that are 5 yr old, or 10 yr old and retest them, how do they compare with your initial review? Especially tube paints, which ones have hardened in the tube?

    oh FINALLY !!! Do you know how long I've craved for this review from you 😂 My personal favorite Chinese oil pastels !
    I've had the basic and morandi sets for 2 years now and they're crazy rich and creamy (theyve got a bit of slickness too??) and I love to use them with my MOPV mungyos. I remember only paying 20-something if converted to USD for each. They're very fun to mix with other pastels of different firmness, and I love em for glazing! What I personally like to do is to cut a bit off and make a small palette and just use some medium and a brush 😊
    Thank you so much for the thorough presentation of the products! ❤

    If you make another pastel painting, try sealing it with mod podge. I like to let my paintings sit for a couple of days and then use the mod podge. I use a really soft brush and a light hand to apply.
    Try it on a painting you're not attached to first to see how it works for you.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I haven't had many pastels go bad, the chalk ones don't seem to change and while I've had some oil pastes get a bit drier overtime it's not very noticeable. I think the ones that are harder and drier to begin with probably have a shorter shelf life (I tossed a Crayola the other day that went bad) but my cheap, hard pentels are still going strong!

    I have both the Holbein oil pastels, and the Cray Pas Specialist oil pastels, both of which are square. (Holbein also has an “academic” line, which is the student grade pastel, and is round, and is quite different from the artists’ line - almost like a softer wax crayon. Cray Pas, of course, has several lines, and the Specialists are considered the highest grade.) I always find it so interesting how different the consistency of oil pastels, even the artist grade ones, are from brand to brand. Holbein is actually quite soft, but I would describe it as dry/velvety. To me it’s almost like working with a soft (“chalk”) pastel, despite the oil binder. If you imagine a very soft pastel, like Unison, and how it can almost melt onto the paper, yet is dry, that is how Holbein feels to me. That is in contrast to Sennelier, also soft, but stickier. The Cray Pas Specialist line is much harder, and is waxy, but it seems like some sort of synthetic wax and is very smooth. It is very different from, say, a wax crayon, or other “waxy” oil pastels I have tried. Erengi oil pastels from Jerry’s Artarama (at least they used to sell them) are round, but otherwise virtually identical to Cray Pas Specialist. I believe both are Japanese, and they have the same color names and identical consistency. What stands out to me with the Cray Pas Specialist oil pastels (which are really excellent, but somehow don’t seem to be very popular) is that they are fairly transparent, like all Cray Pas oil pastels. This is less of an issue when used on a textured surface, but you can really see it on smoother paper. I also wanted to mention that I have observed a.) various oil pastel brands “dry out” over time (Caran d’Ache Neopastels hardened within a year, I’d say…) and b.) your climate/current humidity/temperature can make a huge difference to your experience with oil pastels. I often see a lot of really conflicting descriptions of oil pastels in particular, and I think it comes down to that. What I have written here is my experience with newer oil pastels in, say, moderate temps/humidity levels.

    • @akschauer
      @akschauer 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for this thoughtful and thorough comment. The Caran d'Ache Neopastels are my favorite, but I've had mine for less than a year. Gonna have to monitor how much they dry out. I received a Holbein oil pastel by mistake in a Blick order not too long ago and I completely agree with your assessment with regards to the velvetty, almost chalk pastel feel. What kind of paper do you like to work with for your Holbein and Cray-Pas Specialist pastels?

    • @Anonymoi
      @Anonymoi 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@akschauer I don’t really understand what causes oil pastels to dry out/harden when they don’t contain drying oils, but I’ve had it happen to me with several brands, and moving them to a warm/humid area doesn’t do a whole lot to restore them. So frustrating, but it also seems like a hit or miss thing among different people, so I hope yours are spared. For paper, I like Canson Mi-Teintes as a lightly textured paper (and I like all the different colors it comes in.) The thing I do most often for Specialist pastels is apply clear gesso (I like Liquitex) to either the Mi-Teintes, or any heavier-weight watercolor paper. The clear gesso gives a finish very much like a sanded paper, and makes some of the harder oil pastels go on more like soft/creamy oil pastels. I often use Fabriano Studio Hot Press watercolor paper (140 lb, I think - comes in a pad) for all kinds of things, but it works really well with the clear gesso. It’s actually not a great watercolor paper because it seems to have very hard external sizing, but it is otherwise very versatile.

    As you have been wondering about the pronunciation, the D in D'Artigny is not pronounced as a separate letter it's not "D-Artigny" - it's "dartigny" (as if it were one word) . To make it easy to remember, think about D'Artagnan and the 3 musketeers - the pronunciation is quite similar to that, except for the "I/y" sounds - so it's (think 3 musketeers but with swapped letters!) D'artIgnY☺("darteenyeee", with the emphasis put on the very end of the word)🤺⚔🎨

    Okay, so after getting the round version after much debating, there was a catalog that provide detailed conditions of all the sets. So supposedly that the quality of the round and the square sets are the same, the round ones weigh about 8 grams each while the mini square is 11 grams each (the full square is 23g, but it is much trickier to buy). So it is understandable why the square ones would be a bit pricier, though i just assumed it was because it was a new design

      They are harder and more like a crayon. The neo one is a touch softer than a prismacolor art stick. They are similar but I don't feel that they are in the same category. I have not tried their neophytes either but I would like to!

    You convinced me to throw these in my Saved cart. Have you tried Micro Applicator Brushes with oil pastels? They're tiny cotton swabs and are good for adding details after picking up color from the oil pastels. I'd like to see you demonstrate how silicone/rubber brushes can be used in a separate video. The times I've tried using them, I've not found them as useful as other tools. Micro Applicator Brushes would have deposited more color. Maybe I'm using the rubber brushes wrong.

      I have not tried that. I used them in this video th-cam.com/video/UzBOD6tnCbw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WSDPzftB4KH9MMZ4 and I also used them in my avocado tutorial but it is a time lapse. th-cam.com/video/NbaTMO0VoQw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xyJN8i22Hf5WTSY4 it probably time for a dedicated video, I'll add it to the list. @@thefrugalcrafter Things went pretty quick in the avocado tutorial because 99% of the blending was fingers. TH-cam recommended this video of your oil pastel Misty Forest and you used the rubber tools a bit more. The Micro Applicator Brushes fit your frugal style with 500 for under $7 at Amazon. I got 2.5mm, but they have heads as thin as 1.5mm, but what I have is fine for details. I haven't used them enough to decide if I want smaller.

    Hi got a couple of questions 1) are water soluble oil pastels the same as oil pastels? 2) can you repeat what you would purchase to start with a brand name for soft and medium or hard oil pastels? thank you !!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Water soluble oil pastels can be diluted with water and traditional oil pastels can't. You would need mineral spirits for that.
      Pastel recommendations:
      Oil Pastels-You will want some hard, medium and very soft to layer.
      Hard: Pentel: Cheapest on Blick: shrsl.com/4dzd9 also on amazon: amzn.to/3O87VKn
      Medium Kulox: amzn.to/3SrMuqd or Mungyo Gallery Soft oil pastel: (blick) shrsl.com/4dzdg (amazon) amzn.to/3u1tZ2I
      Super soft:
      Paul Rubens Haiya: amzn.to/47P8QGG
      Sennelier (blick) shrsl.com/4dzdl or amazon: amzn.to/48INewX

      They should if you blend the PR (original formula) down a bit first, the Haiya line is even softer tho so best for the final layer.

    Have you tried using these oil pastels since this review video? Have you tried specifically using them with Paul Rubens or Mungyo oil pastels? I purchased the muted colors Mondari set and mine at least, don’t seem to play very nicely with other oil pastels as originally thought - whether I layer them on top of harder pastels or they’re my base layer. And regardless of whether or not, I use them by themselves, or in combination with another oil, pastel brand, at a certain point, they want to scrape off and takeoff layers of the pastel underneath them. Curious if you or anyone else have had this experience as well after further play? Maybe I got a bad/off set?

    • @thefrugalcrafter

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hullo Jess, I am not Lindsay, yet I have been a working artist for years and there has been times when I had to cut corners, now paper is the last place to skimp on, BUT I have found house brands are less expensive than say Arches and other big name brands! So look at CheapJoe’s Kilimanjaro watercolor paper, Blick’s has 2 store brands 1 is 100% cotton the 2nd is a mix of wood pulp and cotton. I want to say that you will be happier with 100% cotton paper. You can find cotton paper without emptying your wallet! Now another way to save some money is buy multi-media paper that accepts water. I wish you only the best, good luck 🍀

    • @jesseb5112
      @jesseb5112 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mjpete27 Thank you. I am not as picky about paper because this is mainly for backgrounds on cards. I make about 500 cards a year for church. I am taking a good long look at what is lingering in my craft area, and what really gets used. Colored cardstock lingers. I would like to finish off my colored cardstock and then stick with white cardstock that will go through the printer. I love digitals. 100 pound white cardstock. White sulphite sketch paper, and white watercolor paper.

      Hi @jesseb5112 I recommend fabriano studio hot press 90#. You can get a 75 sheet pad for under $30 but 12 sheet pads are around $7. They have cold press too if you like texture. The hotness works great for stamping and watercolors and waterbased markers. You might want the cold press for brush. The 90lb will die cut and emboss great. This paper should meet all of your cardmaking needs. It's 25% cotton too!
