There is and was a lot of gold in Georgia in the Dahlonega area, but the Spanish seemed to have bypassed that region of North Georgia.
Really? I did not know that. Thanks for sharing!
@HistoricalContextUSA The first "gold rush" in the US was in Dahlonega. I am a retired faculty member at University of Georgia. There is a lot of scuttlebutt about DeSoto establishing missions in middle Georgia in the area of Dodge County. There is also controversy around which route he actually took through Georgia. Brilliant series of videos BTW.
@ Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate your added context. Local historians are such an important resource to these stories because they love to share what's disputed and what we know (which is so important!)

Wait till you read the diaries of the explorers that went with EL TOVAR , one said a Hopi priest performed the whole Masonic ceremony, then shook his head ‘’ no ‘’ and said to the chief at awatobi, ‘’ these men are not the Promised White God returning. ‘’ Go figure, chapter 29 Isaiah kinda talks about this ,

Re: "The Spanish crown recalls Colombus back in 1496..." therefore there must have then been ship making the voyage after Colombus to carry such messages. Ships of the crown are able to find their way to the Indies from Spain, presumedly following navigation instructions Colombus had created while in Spain.
I would agree with that!
another great episode!
Thank you!
This is probably way out of sequence for you(i just recently discovered your channel--really like it), but could you do a series of Francisco de Orellana? (1st European to descend the Amazon. Father Carbahal, his priest, wrote quite an account of his journey. There might be other sources. His description of latge population centers, roads and temples along the Amazon was thought to be fantasy.....until recent years when rainforest clearance and lidar began to show the account was likely accurate and the population very large. Research into Amazonian civilizations is ongoing)
I will add this to my list. I am currently not making new episodes, but you never know!
I am the 10th generational male descendant of the Huguenot Pierre Chastain, b. 1659 in Charoost province of Berri, France. His father and grandfather, and l believe GG Grand father were notaire royal at Charoost starting in 1597. They fled to Yverfon, Switzerland approximately 1692, then to Holland , then London. He arrived in Virginia USA in 1700. I’m very proud to be related to them. May God Bless everyone. From Liberty, Missouri. Peace.
Thank you for sharing! Glad you found the channel!
My huguenot ancestors arrived in Virginia in the 1700s as well...Their names was Faure and mine is Ford...Greetings from Knoxville Tennessee
@ ln the year 2000 l drove to Richmond Virginia, actually about 20 miles north where Pierre is buried along with other Huguenots, there were people in the cemetery with your ancestors names there, Ford and the variations of that name there. My great great great Grandfather Jeremiah Chastain was born in Rhea County, Tennessee in 1826 or 27!. He , and 4 brothers came into southern Missouri at different times in early 1800s. Jeremiah came to the northern part of the Ozarks. Thanks for the response Brother.

Great stuff! Had King John of Portugal already sent expeditions down he coast of Africa by the time he meets Colombus sailing back from the America's?
I believe so!
I'm here in jan 2025 to start the whole series from the beginning after I watched the excellent early New England unit. It Is intriguing that the documents Colombus agreed with the Spanish crowd have an expectation that new lands will be found.... was this due to educated geographic specultion or had some sailors already been out there, or other? I guess we can only speculate.. Great stuff! Best history series I've found on you tube!
Thank you! Glad you found your way back to the beginning. To your questions, I think we can only speculate as I did not see anything drawing an answer. Enjoy!
"Columbus", we don't really know his real name, or that this his portrait, wasn't a Christian at all. On the contrary, he was a Spanish Crypto-Jew (Murano). One of many that made up the various "Pirates of the Caribbean". His "departure" date from Spain was the date of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain on Tish b'Av, 1492. Of course, Jews/Semites had been invading Spain since the time of the Carthaginians. The name "Spain" itself is derived from "Shepheard", home of the "Sephardic Jews". Columbus played the role of Catholic missionary by day, but signed all of his personal letters home to his friends and family with the Hebrew letters beit-hay (ב”ה) which are short for "with god's help". I suppose he needed "help" with all of the enslaving and exploitation. A truly vile creature who not only didn't do anything remotely close to what is attributed to him, but was knowingly and actively Evil, even by the standards of the literal Spanish Inquisition back home.
Thanks for watching and sharing.
John Haynes is my (however many greats) grand pappy! I’d love any links to any more information about him if you have any!

Hello I am a dependent from Henry Rust from Hingham do you by chance have any information on the Rust name in the early founding of Massachusetts? Thanks
The name does not ring a bell. Any idea when you think they may have come to Massachusetts? If I see it in the future, I will let you know.
@HistoricalContextUSA Okay thank yes he is on Google Henry Rust 1613-1684 came from Norfolk England in 1633 to Hingham Massachusets wanted to see if there was anymore literature stories or more information about him. Found some things about he was around a Lincoln who was responsible for founding Hingham.

Interesting theory. Thanks for sharing.
You should read the primary sources from the Cortez expedition. He was most assuredly NOT riding into towns and just slaughtering villagers and taking their stuff. There was no way that 600-700 Spaniards walk into an empire of over 12 million and conquer it in such a fashion. Because of la Marina and Fr. Aguilar being able to act as translators for Chontal and Nahuatl, he made alliances and played against the unpopularity of the Aztec authorities, including their priests of blood. The Tarascans were instrumental in particular. Cabeza de Vaca, pronounced with a "b" sound for the "V" in Vaca. The head of the bull, it was a family honorific they had earned in the wars during the Reconquista. I am glad you are covering his story, it is miraculous.
Thank you for sharing. I hope someday to read the Cortez expedition sources.

I live in the OCUTE/ COFAQI area of georgia in greene co ga! A friend of mine were talking about his grandfather or maybe his great grandfather and all the indian artifacts his grandfather had collected from plowing the fields with a mule in the early 1900s! He kept them in an old country store where as a kid my dad would stop by a talk to him! He has since passed away 30 or 40 years ago! My friend and i were talking about his artifacts and he told me he had found a 15th century spanish coin plowing the fields as well! I asked his family still had it and he said no it was lost when the original country store burned in the 1920s or 30s! He later rebuilt store in same place! The largest indian mound complex in greene county is in the same area of southeastern greene county as well! I imagine that coin of whats left of it could be under ir around that old store thats still standing today and pretty well maintained! The map shows De Soto did come thru my area as i was told as a kid and the coin reinforces that!
Wow! Great story and I hope that coin gets found one day. I can only imagine the treasures that were on display in that old country store.
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Great content... Never knew New Hampshire's origin... super interesting and well done!

Seems like the expedition just blundered and plundered from village to village saying " wheres the gold " ? That a few of them found there way back home is a miracle
So many of these expeditions stranded people in the American southeast, and in some cases, people found their way home a decade plus later.
Natives were smart , they just told DeSoto the next village had gold to get rid of the spaniards
I'm guessing you're right.
What about the Ethiopian looking people ? With strong arms and well built legs ? In 1524.. seems like those people were reclassified as negro and enslaved with the Africans who came just kind of like what happen in “VIRGINIA INDIANS MAY BE CLASSIFIED WITH NEGRO RACE”, Foundational Black Americans oral history says we intermingled with the BLACK “Ethiopian” looking Indians (who were the originals) and the asiatic Indians also.
Several people have mentioned this in the comments, but I did not come across anything when I researched the topic.
It's a intriguiing series. Unfortunately the media today is so keen to rewrite and simplify history to fit their narrative. History rarely fit modern narrative. Actually it's full of surprising fact. Like, a black man would feel much safer and respected in Nazi Berlin in '36 than in New York (let alone southern US States). An unconfortable truth but yet it explains why there were actual Nazi groups in the US at the time. A piece of missing context for this part. I've researched a bit and I haven't found any mention if de las Casas actually spoke English, but I doubt it. So the translation shown here must be someone else's. The earliest transalations occured as part of a propaganda effort in the late XVI century by the British to cast the Spaniards in a bad light, and pose themselves as the liberators of the Indies. It's no wonder they turned de las Casas in a celebrity of sorts. So exaggeration was not only part of style of the time, and clearly a choice by de las Casas, but I wonder how much of it is due to the translation itself. De las Casas neutral position towards Columbus speaks volumes indeed. He wasn't a fan, but he probably sided with Columbus when he denounced the status of disarray of the colonies. Unfortunately we have little of what Columbus actually wrote. A lot of stuff arrived to us via "translations", we don't know how accurate they are. This allows speculations to be made, and then turned into "facts". Also, de las Casas efforts weren't fruitless. See sourcebooks.fordham.edu/mod/1542newlawsindies.asp. It's 1542 and the King writes "We have ordered provision to be made that from henceforward the Indians in no way be made slaves". Even more significant is another paragraph: "Because report has been made to us that owing to the pearl fisheries not having been conducted in a proper manner deaths of many Indians and Negroes have ensued, We command that no free Indian be taken to the said fishery under pain of death, and that the bishop and the judge who shall be at Veneçuela direct what shall seem to them most fit for the preservation of the slaves working in the said fishery, both Indians and Negroes, and that the deaths may cease. If, however, it should appear to them that the risk of death cannot be avoided by the said Indians and Negroes, let the fishery of the said pearls cease, since we value much more highly (as is right) the preservation of their lives than the gain which may come to us from the pearls." Of course, this is not to be seen in the context of "human rights", rather more "it pleases the King". But still.
Thanks for the comment. Anyone is welcome to find de las Casas original writings in Spanish and verify them through their own translation. I think it's important to note that not one persons account or a group of accounts will tell the entire story, yet I think it is important to share and discuss like you are doing here.
