What do you do with your hands, arms, and elbows in the canter?
Many riders (including myself) struggle to find a steady contact in the canter. In the canter, the horses’ head follows a nodding motion as the horse goes through the 3 beat footfall of the canter stride. It can be challenging to coordinate your body, arms, and elbows to find this steady contact with the horse’s mouth but it is essential to work towards a steady contact so that your horse will relax and stay forward in the canter!
Here are a few tips to help you find a steady contact:
-In the canter seat, your shoulders stay more or less still and the hips move in a circular motion to follow the horses back. As the horse’s head and front end lift up and your seat goes back, your elbows bend. As the horses head goes down and the front legs are on the ground, your elbows have less bend.
-If your elbows do not bend and straighten, the reins will go slack and then pull in the horses mouth. It is very important to have following elbows in the canter.
    - In the canter transition, you should give on the inside rein to allow the horse to bring the inside hind leg forward and through. If you do not allow a little “space” on the inside rein or if there is too much pressure on the inside hand, this might cause the horse to take the incorrect lead.
I challenge you to focus on your contact in the canter as you are riding this week. Really focus on finding your following elbows and feel how this gives the horse both confidence and freedom in the canter!
    Happy Riding!

The stripes were really helpful; the riders who are good enough that you would want to learn from them don't look like they're moving much at all, so it can be kind of confusing to pinpoint what's going on with various bits of them lol

Wow, thanks for this! Clear and concise as always. Your comment about giving with the inside hand made me realize I learned that in dressage lessons 25 years ago- but I haven't actually DONE it in 15!

This was so very helpful! Especially regarding the giving with the inside rein when asking for the canter transition to encourage the correct lead! The slow motion also helped SO MUCH! Thank you for this video, as I have a lesson tomorrow and will have to try this if I am brave enough to canter!😕😁

Yes, indeed, as you well know we are struggling with canter at the moment. Coordination, balance, timing, CONFIDENCE, and so forth. The arms, elbows, shoulders, and hands are a work in progress for sure. Thanks for always breaking it all down for us. Time in the saddle is key!

can you do a video on how to strengthen a horse's canter? because my horse is much stronger on the left lead and when im cantering on the right, she will do a trot step and switch to left lead, or just break, and her collection is much worse to the right.

Hello Amelia, I will certainly give it a try. Thank you as always! 🥰 Would you consider making a video on how to do downwards transition from canter to trot please? I find it tricky to ask the horse and when the horse is changing the gait I bounce! 🤣

So it looks like your hand position remains relatively still- they are not going back and forth with the horses’s head and neck it is just the opening and closing of your elbows that is going with the motion of the horse’s head. I will try softening on inside rein- today I had a lot of wrong leads on canter on my green horse today.

Be sure you have the correct bend in the horse before you ask for the canter and weight your inside seat bone when you ask.

The horse is just overbent constantly during canter. I know that's fashionable nowadays, but horses with heads behind the vertical literally can't see where they're going properly, let alone how uncomfortable it is for them

Not just canter, but in all the gaits from what I’ve seen. Looks overflexed at the poll to compensate for inversion in the rest of the spine. Painful to watch.
