This is one of the best Chinese tv series I've come across, the lead actors were very skilled imo. I loved the slow pace because it really builds the story and makes you connected to each character. I hope for more series like this from China!

*Spoiler* I just finished the series. I've been reading the difference between the novel (I haven't read it) and the show endings. I have to agree that I am sad the show had such a sad ending. I prefer the book's ending as I feel that the show's ending kinda goes against everything you saw to that point. In some ways, I agree why the show was ended in a such a manner. In others, it was clear that Feng Zhiwei was the most important thing. So I am not sure if I am completely satisfied with "Well, it's sad! But the empire is most important!" conclusion.
I agree. The very essence of the title is that the phoenixes rise from the dead, not just the empire but more importantly and accurately, the individual protagonists. That's why, to me, the original ending in the novel is much more fitting. Netflix didn't make the best call on the ending. I hope they remake the ending or have a season 2 to rectify it and revert to the novel on which the series was based on.
The ending is very sad. My heart would like a better ending but how can she look every day this man who is her enemy ? Her family is executed by the man's family. On the other hand, if she stays with him, her husband could meet a lot of problems because of politics . And at the end, the king would be angry. If she loves him she has to quit in order to clean the way of the emperor. Love is against empire. This ending is sad but logical.

Jan Irfan ha ha it was so good that I contracted my first ever celebrity crush... to give you persons to why that’s funny. I’m a 48 year old Metal Head (extreme Metal) with adult children. My oldest is 30. I’m practical, logical, not a fan girl. Ha! Chen Kun did so good that I’m practically fixated! As heartbreaking is this series was, it’s probably my all time favorite. I’ll rewatch it at some point. I’m still traumatized almost a month after watching it! I had to quickly go watch cute fluffy stuff like Ashes of Love! 😹
Don't be afraid. This drama is excellent. Some people find that it is too long. But the story is well done. We have story after story. The actors are excellent. The principal actor acts very well. He is very expressive. He can be tender, violent, angry .... a pannel of expressions. I adore this drama.
I just started this series yesterday after finishing The Princess Weiyoung. Can someone tell me what I'm in for? This series seems so much darker and 'heavier' than WY, even though that show was no walk in the park either xD
I finish this series today and start the princess weiyoung and l feel it's mistake l mean l still sad for the whole things that happened in the Last episodes and now l am watching this series with alot of sad and hurt scens l can’t take it😅😅
