Episode two begins in the heat of battle of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War 50 years ago.
Egyptian tanks had made a successful amphibious crossing of the Suez Canal and retaken part of the Sinai. And in the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967, a fierce battle raged between Syrian and Israeli forces.
In the first five days of the war, Israeli losses alone in the Golan Heights amounted to 250 tanks and hundreds of men.
These decisive opening days of the war saw both sides make significant gains but at the same time, suffer heavy losses.
It was a battle that would continue for several more months - and five decades later, the political fallout from this conflict is still being felt in parts of the Middle East.

The documentary comes across as if Israel has complete agency in its capabalities, there's little mention of its reliance on the U.S such as Nixons 'Operation Nickel Grass' which was the codename for a strategic airlift conducted to deliver weapons and supplies to Israel during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Between 14 October and 14 November of that year, the Military Airlift Command of the United States Air Force shipped approximately 22,325 tons of supplies, including tanks, artillery, and ammunition, in multiple flights of C-141 Starlifters and C-5 Galaxys.

The Syrian army had been prepared for the war. Unlike the Egyptians, the Syrian army had been distracted by several coups and not focused on structuring their divisions and enhancing their capacities. This is why they failed to recapture the Golan Heights.

Read General Saad Shazly Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed forces during the Arab Israeli war of 1973 book called “The Crossing of the Suez”. Very insightful from the Egyptian perspective.

So what I learned from this is that Sadat pretty much single handedly stole a loss out of the jaws victory, putting his "political" considerations ahead of military tactital needs. Egypt basically lost a 28-3 lead in 3rd quarter, because Sadat couldnt listen to basic logic from his commanders.

That's right, Israel had to teach the Arabs a lesson, "If you attack Israel, you will pay a heavy price". In part 3 you will see that Egypt finally learned that lesson, and the only way it was going to get the Sinai Peninsula back was to play nice, negotiate with Israel, recognize Israel, establish full diplomatic relations with Israel, and most of all when Israel asks Egypt to do something, Egypt responds with "yes sir, yes sir, is there anything else you need us to do to keep Israel happy?" Syria also learned a heavy lesson in this war, don't start a fight that you cannot possibly win, or not only will you loose the fight, you will almost loose your capital city, and after that Syria never dared to go anywhere near the Golan Heights again, but to be fair to Syria instead of loosing their honor, they decided to take a territorial loss instead, they will never get the Golan Heights back but they did keep their honor.

It seems that every major battle since the establishment of Israel has relied on the support of American intelligence and/or resources which would seemingly place Israel into debt with the U.S. But I continually wonder; is the U.S. willingly assisting or are they under the influence of Israel ?
