I went to CC for my first two years out of college. I can tell you I was not mentally ready to move out and be on my own yet so it really worked out for me. Also let me keep my nice part time job and let me save up a bunch of money. I have since transferred to a state university (Florida State) and honestly it’s been a pretty seemles experience other than being on my own now. Those two years humbled me and realized that this is a business decision for my career. You can always party after you get the degree kids. But I am set to graduate debt free in the next two years and very happy with my decision especially after seeing close friends either drop out completely or be in so much debt from only their first two years. ESPECIALLY with the COVID situation shrinking the “college experience” it’s probably a good idea for recent high school grads to look at their local CCs instead of going in debt taking online classes.

I'm currently going to a community college under a state grant that is paying for ALL of my tuition! I can personally vouch for everything Shane says here. In my experience, the classes are small (I had a math class that was just 6 students), the instructors are friendly and available, and there's the added bonus of not having to live on your own just yet. Anyone considering community college and reading this, I highly recommend it! Just make sure to find one that is smaller and has good reviews.

I found this channel at EXACT right time! I’m a high school senior, graduating in June 2021. The students graduating in my year are pretty lucky; I think most colleges are being more lenient with who they accept, since I was accepted to over eight universities with a 2.8 gpa (most of them are in-state) and no SAT scores. With all these acceptances, I’m receiving a whole lot of financial aid awards and I’m searching for scholarships to pay the balance since I’m extremely poor and couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket. My biggest worry now, is actually CHOOSING a good college; the one that’s giving me the most money in scholarships/grants, and has the major/minor programs that I’ve trying to go for.

Community College grad here, I did very well at CC, I basically could’ve gone anywhere (minus ivys/nescac schools). My dream school was the University of Miami, I absolutely fell in love with the school in Hs but didn’t have the grades out of HS to get in as a Finance student. After graduating CC, They were actually pretty generous with giving me credits for business classes and other gen Ed class, along with their scholarship money (~$15,000). It only brought down the price to $53,000, which unfortunately was still a little steep. I had to settle for my in-state school, that also has a outstanding business school. Both schools accepted the same amount of credits btw. If you do well at CC and depending on what private school it is and if you are willing to pay the private school tuition, it could still be very possible to go one of those schools, if that is your dream school.

@@ShaneHummus I've seen some of your videos before posting this content actually. And I think that a good way to get more viewers, ergo more ad revenue, is by tailoring more videos towards general audiences. Your popular uploads have been based on education and finance, something that'll attract the young adult population (18-22 ish). I feel like that if you display what your life is like as a result of your hard work as a Pharm Grad (Like what house you live in, neighborhood, city, car, etc) and then explain to the audience why you ended up where you live and what made you decide on those specific purchases. That way, you knock down your two popular categories - education and finance.

I think you left out an important aspect. When choosing schools that are not Ivies, it is still really important to consider rankings for your major(s) of interest. For example, in my home state of Virginia, the cheapest school for me to go to would have been Virginia Commonwealth University. It is a decent school but not known very well nationally. It is a good option for health professions because it also has Nursing, Dentistry, and Medical programs. For something business related, you would be best going to University of Virginia, which has several top 15 business programs. For something engineering related, you would be much better off going to Virginia Tech or even University of Virginia. Their programs are ranked 13th and 39th respectively in the latest USNews Ranking. They're not "top 5" but they are good enough to be sending engineers to companies like Google, Amazon, SpaceX, NASA, Boeing, etc. In my own experience, as a student at Virginia Tech, with little practical or job experience but a good GPA at a competitive top 15 engineering school, I was able to land my first paid internship after my third semester in college. Some of my peers at school went the Community College route, and I studied part-time at my local CC when I was in high school and have nothing but good things to say, but those students just don't get the same kind of opportunity (as early) as students having entered the university as a freshman. They can get the same places in the end, but it will almost definitely take longer.

It was my two years of community college that eventually opened the door to grad school at Stanford. Many CC instructors are adjuncts at local uni’s, teaching the same courses for a fraction of the price. Simply put, don’t sleep on community college.

I transferred from my local community college in NY to UCF. The total cost of attendance here is not too different from a highly ranked SUNY( ~$31k vs $38k). I’d likely have to pay the full cost at a SUNY since my parents make too much to qualify for Excelsior and I’m a transfer. I’ll also have a little over $15k in debt after graduation, the same as if I attended a SUNY. So trading snowy winters for sun was worth it. 🌴

    • @katydid5088
      @katydid5088 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Figure out what you're good at, balance that between what is economically stable and profitable.
      2. Search and sort best programs for your field of choice. Ask about alumni and internship opportunities. Do you need to do a residency year with core classes? Most of the Ivy leagues require this and phenomenal racial and interpersonal ability. It sucks to say it, but an incredibly smart immigrant with brown skin and well educated parents beats out the brown kid from the states. Coming from an immigrant country bumps up your application in some of these universities, especially if you are in humanities (politics related) or sciences. Retaining and encouraging skilled immigrant workers is always laudible, bug coming from a disadvantaged neighborhood in America versus Guatemala with an increased English fluency puts you higher in the greater needs category. Transfering to an Ivy, or getting in as a working adult who doesn't hold another B.A or B.S makes transfer or direct entry to an Ivy almost impossible.
3.Allocate finances, applying for scholarships, and saving money (you will have to skimp somewhere but the grind is worth it). After balancing your wants and needs to a precipitous degree, always make sure the University you attend has networking potential. If not that, change jobs into a co-related field and make connections there, pointing out you're studying. Getting good grades, if you bring this up to an employer will help.
4.Apply, gather study resources and attend class. Make your study and play environment conducive to learning without distraction while still saving some time per day and per week to do something fun.
      5. Pick local volunteer groups and make new friends or acquaintances. Your reputation if they recognize you is on the line but otherwise, they may have others that can help you if you're really struggling for learning and emotional skills. Soft skills in any industry matter as much as your schooling.
      6. Finish school with good grades (they're your first barrier as newborn grad). Build a resume if you didn't have an internship. Learn company recognizance skills and ask if your school has an intern/student career alumni service center. Either before or after you graduate they can help. At the community college level, I had someone willing to coach me through mock interviews while checking my resume. Student services don't end until after graduation.
      7. Volunteer. It's both a good thing for the community and your interpersonal skills but a bad thing because you may lack industry expert feedback. Call managers or recruiters or put out emails asking for job/skill requirements. For some, portfolio links and spare projects are as important as the degree and form interview questions. Company culture may or may not fit your personality or security clearances. New hires for government work are slow with less flexibility to get in compared to a veteran. (Both a good and bad thing.) For security purposes there's somethings a civilian is useless for unless you somehow beat out the competition by being the last applicant standing. If you have a prior record, expect civil service to be very difficult to get into.

I went to community college because of my grades not being as high to go directly to a 4 year college. In community college, I paid 20% out of pocket, which was about 50 dollars, and 80% was paid by financial aid because my family were low income. After transfered to SFSU for anthropology, financial aid paid the full amount and I got what was left over. I graduated from SFSU in anthropology with no student loan debt while living in at home just commuting to the city, but had many friends that were in my department, living the city had thousands dollars in debt when they got out. Some were already working in Starbucks.

You make excellent points. I would like to add though that there are colleges that are free, such as college of the ozarks. Going to public university is fine, but the flagship state schools are so much harder than small private colleges. Going to both, and if healthcare is your goal, I can honestly say if I would rather go to a small private university with direct degree programs. There are straight 6 year programs for pharmacy, physical therapy and med school. in state schools you go in with an intended major, as opposed to private universities/colleges. Some private colleges have such amazing scholarship packages that they are at the same price of state schools or even cheaper, with smaller class sizes, and more teacher interaction.

Late as hell but I'd definitely appreciate your thoughts on how to get around out of state tuition at the big colleges like UCLA. The only way I know if is to live in the state for at least a year, with a parent-or by yourself, in which case you'd have to demonstrate financial independence from your parents, which is extremely difficult. There are many other stipulations, and if you make the slightest mistake it's over.
It's really hard to get around out of state tuition. Schools like UCLA or Michigan are excellent on virtually any standard, probably the tier below the very best like Harvard & Stanford and certainly the best publics... but if you can't afford to pay OOS just don't apply. That's my advice. Unless you can actually move out to Cali or Michigan or wherever and get in-state tuition. It would really suck paying the application fee, getting accepted, and having to decline them because of exorbitant out of state fees.

So the only thing I will say is that currently many employers are offering to pay for full tuition for their employees. Most of the schools under their umbrella are actually the For-Profit school you spoke about. Not saying that you are wrong because for someone coming out of high school they definitely should not go to those schools. However, I have seen people in director and executive roles with degrees from these schools, so I think if your employer is going to pay for it don’t just shove it off. Do your research and make your own decision.

I just got accepted into westpoint and can give you some of my knowledge on the outlook of a graduate. Once you're out of a college you serve as an officer for 5 years, the salary plus benefits of a starting officer is around 60k and increases with every promotion. You won't have any debt as westpoint is free, (they even pay you 12k a year as pocket money) also the degree you get will most likely be a stem degree ( as a required percentage of degrees given by the academy have to be) once you do your five years of service you have a stem degree and 5 years of leadership expierience whcih I imagine is extremely marketable to most companies. A lot of grads start their own buisnesses too

If you do know what you want to do as a degree go to a community college/trade school. If your degree that has a base in a trade job like machining for say mechanical engineering or something related get that understanding of how things are done in the fields. For example know how parts are made before going and start designing parts. (Machines and engineering field) also you can get really good paying jobs to work as you go to school.

I would say that even if you get into a prestigious private university you need to know how to pay for it and you need to know that you can do it. You can go to a public, in-state university for almost nothing comparably, especially if you are a good student, and you'll probably stand out from others in your class and build connections easier. College is a lot of mental strain, and especially at an Ivy League, you're lucky just to make it to the end. I'm fairly sure most people go to college for some period of time nowadays, but only a third of America has a college degree.

I’m deciding between UTRGV and UT Austin. UTRGV has given me enough money to cover all tuition and most costs however with UT Austin I don’t think I’ll have enough to pay for everything with the money they give me and the scholarships I have earned, but UT Austin is a more prestigious school. I’m not sure which one to go with

Shane I need advice I just graduated with an AA in business management from community college and found out that I can get my bachelors in that school. I don’t know if to do it cause although I would save a ton of money everyone knows this school as a place to get your AA only. Literally the only major they offer a bachelors degree for is business management so I don’t know if to pay more and go to an in state school since I already have 60 credits and would only have to pay for the last two years. Or stay in my school and graduate either completely debt free or with like $3k loan. Frankly, I’m just scared employers are not going to take my degree seriously because it’s from a known CC

Research if they pay more for graduates from top tier uni then decide from there. Good luck!
