Don't take your trailer on the NJ Turnpike! (BAD IDEA)

RVing the East Coast: NEW YORK to NEW HAMPSHIRE to MAINE
Well we've had to step up our game when it comes to RV Navigation in the last couple months! From the steep grades on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the hectic traffic around NYC, the crazy bridges (avoid George Washington Bridge at all costs, and it's $54 toll), and the low clearances to avoid having overhead clearing issues / obstructions because the last thing we wanted was to lose our AC unit!
Driving around the East Coast has already taught us how to be better at RV Life and we will now be using RV GPS and some free resources (like flattestroute.com) to help us avoid the trickier roads with crazy grades or many low clearances! Hope our mistakes help you to avoid going through any of that.

I've lived in NJ my whole life, and we have a travel trailer. I would have never taken a route that took you over the GW bridge. It would have been better to either go up I81 in PA then I84 east and crossed the Hudson at Newburgh. If that was too far north then 78 East PA to NJ the I287 North in NJ to I287 east in NY and go over the bridge in Tarrytown. PS: Wife and I love your vids.

Saw a video that recommended to write down the height on your camper and write it on a poster put in somewhere in the car where you see it. It was nerve-racking. Well done.

I can't believe ya'll drove the entire length of the Hutch from Cross County to 684 without getting pulled over...for New England bound campers...the Tappan Zee is your best friend!

@@ONWorldTravel We are on Long Island and last summer did a Mt. Washington to Acadia Natl Park to Boston over two weeks, but we pull a single axle TT. I found the roads around Boston to be more confusing than NYC...but I know that beast!

I know what you mean about those hills. We did a round trip in 4 days for Naples to Boston. Oh My God! Never in my life I freaked out so much. Those hills up there. Where so steep and curvy. I had a full blown panic attack

My wife and I were cringing when we saw you got on the Hutchinson River. We use to live up there and every few months a truck misses the passenger only signs and gets stuck due to the heights. Many have gotten stuck under an underpass. Was glad you made it. We have enjoyed watching your escapades in your RV.

Time to use a RV GPS, the Merit Parkway is closed to trailers as far as I know. We got pulled over in a class C and told to exit immediately.
Yes! We’ve learned our lesson for sure! Not worth it 😂
I knew you guys where on the Hutch in NY or the Merit Rt 5.
Next time use 95 to New Jersey Turnpike to 87 to 684 (going north). If the GPS tells you to head north or south. DO NOT go Via George Washington bridge. It is clogged with traffic. I bought a Garmin RV GPS 890. You put in all tailor Hight weight length and width and it will not take you under a low bridge.

Maine is a blast! Hope you get an RV GPS soon! Driving through that part of New York sucks! I did that a few weeks ago with my 35’ fifth wheel… super stressful!

Alittle late to the show here, but I live on Long Island and here in NY state, no commercial license plate vehicles or any trailers no matter how big or small are allowed on ANY parkways. NY is weird and has the whole parkway system for passenger cars only and you have a really good chance of getting a huge fine for driving your camper on any of them. Just FYI haha but glad you guys made it

I remember that confusion about plates because CT used to tag all pickup trucks with commercial or combination. but I saw plenty of plumber vans and what not so I figured commercial ment stuff like box trucks and semis.

Always make sure you measure your ac unit on top as well. And if possible get a truckers garmin will save you head aches 😊 Also you could be a trucker you back up well and are pretty calm under pressure😎

Just came back from New York in our trailer and it was crazy! The bridges almost turned it into a convertible more than once LOL. If y’all get the chance, make it up to lubec Maine and hike the coast around the quoddy lighthouse! Honesty enjoyed it just as much as Acadia

For future ny/NJ travel... NEVER EVER EVER tow on a parkway.... parkways were designed to not allow busses or 18 wheelers... so it's just good practice... if it says no trucks... don't go.. :)

when you are going down a hill you should be able to set your cruise control to a lower speed and it should slow you down.

Also put a 2x on the a/c out to the edge of trailerand measure. Don’t put any stock in anyone else tells you, it’s your $$$$$$$$ and fines also........

I know y’all have had some costly maintenance expenses lately and apparently RVing on the east coast is more expensive and crowded, which doesn’t sound like fun. So, thought I’d suggest you could perhaps look into camp/park hosting or campworking where you sign up for work in the RV park in exchange for free RV site and/or paid wages and you generally still have time to actually vacation. Just saw several videos about it from these two YT channels You, Me & the RV and I’m Not Lost I’m RVing.
It’d be a shame to do all this driving and just end up racing from place to place just to edit videos and then head to a new destination. This might take some planning so finding work at the last minute might not be possible, but thought I’d mention it. Happy travels. Have some fun!
