The filament increase between KT88 and KT120 is an extra 1.8 Watt (9.5W versus 11.3W) and I doubt if that will give any amplifier a problem. So no surprise manufacturers are say that it is OK.

That's not true. McIntosh states the KT120 tube can not be used in the MC275 IV amp. I don't know about the other series of 275 amps.
