Abandoned Desert Motel

  • Poking around an old abandoned motel and/or apartment complex at a lonely desert crossroads on a BLISTERINGLY hot day in July, when temperatures were well over 100 degrees! I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a settlement like this, when it's so unbearably hot 3 months of the year, without a single river, lake or swimming pool to cool off in! These people must have been HARD CORE....but apparently they finally had enough, and abandoned their former home in search of greener, cooler pastures.
    I didn't fully develop an idea of what possibly happened here until later, but here's what I think:
    The kid who lived here and had all the weightlifting equipment was an aspiring football star. His family was so poor that they couldn't afford to live in town, and had to stay way out here where the dad and mom ran a small motel and gift shop, barely eking out a hardscrabble living.
    Meanwhile, the kid had to travel ten miles each way to school each day in Boron, which made it kind of tough to have a social life....so he spent all his time lifting weights, building himself up for the Varsity football team tryouts. He had his eye on the beautiful daughter of the boss man at the local boron mine, but there was no way in hell her daddy would ever let his princess date some poor slob living in a run-down motel by the railroad tracks way out in the boondocks...so his love was unrequited, even though she always smiled at him when they passed each other in the halls at school.
    But they ended up being assigned to the same History class project, and got to know each other better...and eventually started talking about their hopes and dreams. Neither of them wanted to spend the rest of their lives in this dusty desert town -- they wanted to go west, to the coast, where she could break into the movies and he could play for the Chargers, and on their days off they'd swim in the ocean and listen to the seagulls.
    Finally, the fall before his Junior year the kid made the football team -- and he was so good, they made him the star quarterback! Now all of a sudden ALL the girls at school wanted to talk to him, but he still held out for the boron mine boss's daughter...and he finally worked up the courage to ask her to the homecoming dance. She said yes....but her daddy said no! Until finally, at the big homecoming football game against the Bobcats' longtime rivals, the kid scored seven touchdowns, winning the game for the first time in 20 years!!!
    As his teammates showered the kid in Gatorade after the game, the boron mine boss came over and shook his hand: "Son, I'd be honored for you to take my daughter to the dance!" He even handed the kid the keys to his prize Corvette, so that he could drive to the dance in style.
    The kid was so stoked -- his life had turned around! At the dance, he and his date were voted Homecoming King and Queen, and everyone wanted to come up and shake his hand/slap him on the back. He was now the most popular kid in school, and at the afterparty down at the local dry lake bed all the other kids gave him all the beer and Fireball he could drink. After awhile the mine boss's daughter whispered in his ear that they should go someplace less crowded, so they slipped away, got in daddy's Vette, and headed out to the local Lovers' Lane. Alas, all the booze, adulation and adrenaline of the day caught up with Johnny Quarterback...and he lost control of the Vette going around a curve. The Vette smashed into an embankment, and the two kids were both instantly killed!
    When news got out, the boss man was devastated: "I knew I never should have let my princess go with that no-good white trash hick!" His anger and despair were such that he pulled some strings with local county officials, and had the dead kid's family's motel shut down for code violations, so that they were driven out of the area, never to return.
    Ever since then, the motel has just sat there at the side of the highway, deserted and haunted with sad memories. But they say that when the westbound trains pass through, you can see the ghosts of a buff young quarterback and his beautiful virginal girlfriend running alongside it until they jump on the back, hitching a ride toward the coast...and freedom.

    Wonderhussy...I know it's been nearly 3 years since you posted this and you probably won't see this but you have a brilliant, fertile imagination and could have a career being a screen writer or a true crime novelist. Love all your videos. Before I discovered you, I never knew the desert was so rich in history and lore. Stay safe and keep up the great videos.

    I'm glad I watched the entire video, because before you said you were in Boron, CA, I knew you were at Highway 58/Highway 395. I worked 34-years at Edwards AFB. In the 1960's the Rocket Lab ran 24/7 and Boron was the closest place to live. It's an armpit. I lived in Lancaster, slightly less than an armpit.
    I find your videos very educational. Have you thought about having a professor use your videos as part of their curriculum?

    The Boron Bobcats is indeed the local high school football team... score!
    The term "record album" dates from the 78 era, when each record could only hold about 3 minutes of program on a side. So for symphonies and the like, multiple records had to be stored in an album, the term borrowed from "photograph album". In the LP era, the term stuck even for a single record in a jacket.
    WH, you are becoming the 21st century Bukowski!

      Robbie B. I'm kinda a desert fan myself but really I'll take any type of nature I can get; the desert, the beach, the mountains, a forest, I don't care but I live in Texas & everything is either private property or state parks that you have to pay to get into & it they don't really feel like nature with their paved roads, big plastic covered maps with flyers that tell you about the plants, & handrails on the footpaths.. living in a city has its advantages for sure but not getting any real nature can get depressing. And my definition of nature is an outdoor place where you can go build a fire and shoot guns for free without anybody bothering you.

      To: Daniel Fultz: That was one hell of a refreshing post to read from another person's mental status& mind!. and It is an honor to read someone else thoughts that do compare to my type of thinking!. and I am glad to have met you, Daniel, it is a pleasure!.

    • @abbeykroeter
      @abbeykroeter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robbie-- everything was great until he had to add "shoot guns for free".
      I am not against guns, not an extreme either way... I was in the military and my family hunted and used what we hunted all through the 70's and 80's... but I can't stand when I get out in nature, real nature, and of course I have to hear gun shots. Just HAVE to. Can't just be birds, or just imagine... NOTHING! No noise made by people at all.
      Have the guns ready to go. I'm all for it. Also, if they haver to target practice, do it where you're actually NOT in the wilderness but somewhere outside town where it's allowed, and then for pete's sake pick up all the trash and leftover cases that typically show after those so-called "nature lovers" do their shooting for free.
      Then get out where there's nothing actually produced by people. No buildings, no sounds, nothing but the stuff you need to survive, and then keep it quiet. Then check out what runs along and flies by.
      Now THAT's the definition of nature.

    Was that a rare Wonder Hussy doll? - Busch is your fave, right? - Those old 78 records are worth bucks! - Steps leading to nothing yet construction materials (wood and blocks) nearby. That project never got completed. - I love your Berenstain / Hillary ramble. - I didn't see any gloves, little missy. 1 demerit! (Although you are nicely color co-ordinated.) -

    That medical list on the cart, and some of the strange room arrangements, make me wonder if the "motel" could have been an extended care nursing home for old folks. Might account for the boxes of mass market paperbacks, sentimental child-related nicknacks and the veteran photograph. Must have been trailers where the steps and sidewalk were.

    WH, I am glad you seem to be happier. I have literally driven through that intersection hundreds of times. I never noticed the hotel and never ate at the Astro Burger. In fact, I have been given a tour of the Boron mine all the way to the bottom. The tour was given by an English Engineer who ended up running the place. If you are interested in mining operations you can take a tour, just contact their visitor center, though, they probably won't take you into the mine itself. In fact, if you ever want a complete tour of an operating mine, I could get you one, even on a day when they blow up a mountain (they do it by little parts). Also, the boron mine is owned by Rio Tinto which was an Australian company that I believe the Chinese now own. They refer to Borax as "white gold" because of it's value by the pound. And no, I never worked in mining but on occasion I worked with geologists. I make the offer because I know you will do as your told on site and be respectful and NO you cannot wear flip flops in an active mining operation.

      @Wonderhussy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Carpenter well I would love to tour a mind someday! It's funny you mentioned Rio Tinto, I was just on their website for some reason looking at all their operations

    That was such a cool romantic analogy...Lets say. That high school star quarter back and his fine Boss Man's daughter knocks her up. After high school graduation has got no job and the Boss Man is no friggin way going to hire him. He has no choice but go into the military. So our hero joins the Army. With his new wife they get stationed in Germany. The next few years they go to Korea, Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, Italy, and finally back home to the US. He retires, him and his wife live in Las Vegas where they are close to his in laws. The Old Boss Man is happy to see and play with his grandchildren. This would have been a classic happy story.

    It wasn't long ago that there were a few cars out in front of those back units. Every time I drive by I slow down and look down that drive to see if anyone was living there. And of course wonder what it would take to restore.

    Just north of the old motel is an abandoned airstrip. The area is marked on old maps as a military reservation named "Plant #72". It is theorized that the military took possession of the area as it is rich in the materials needed to make rocket fuel. But the need to mine this particular deposit never materialized, so nothing was developed beyond the dirt runway. The runway may also have later served the Boron Air Force Base (later Boron Federal Prison) - part of North America's Early Warning System. If you have time, check out the old base - it's pretty cool. Just stay away from the tower - it's still in use. No need to get a visit from MiB.

    Another great video. Drove thru that area hundreds of times just to fuel up on my way to or from Fort Irwin. Surprised the place was intact. No real heavy damage by vandals or, tweakers. Never payed attention to that abandoned motel, now I know. Like a lot of things in that area, things come and mostly go. Wonder who's property was in there. valuable stuff. Interesting story you told in the end. Unusual theory. Stay safe and thanks for sharing your travels.

    A-Plus for this one. Love your stuff. You are likely very close to the truth when you spin these yarns about the people who lived in these places. These out-of-the-way, rural, desert, near-deserted areas in the California outback are supposed to be where the infamous Bates Motel (fictional) supposedly stood. Supposedly the fictional Bates Motel stood at a convenient location, perhaps such as the intersection of HWY 395 and HWY 58, to draw in the long-distance drivers.

    Did you not notice the sidewalks and stairs to nowhere are identical to every other unit? Can't be that mysterious to an explorer. Piles of salvaged materials from demolition of the units. No slabs left behind because post and beam foundations. Display equipment stored in what were once very inexpensive rental units. Toys still in packages? Probably a liquidated thrift store. I've driven by the place several times over the years, but never stopped to check out the place. The place seems creepy, The Bates Motel kind of creepy.
