Here's a tip: Add your food colouring to the water first then you can skip an entire stage and I imagine you can use a blender in place of all the sieving stages. Happy Holi - just enough time to get ready for the weekend. Thanks for posting
Im going to start making this tonight for my gender reveal party next week!! Thanks so much for a very useful and helpful tutorial, Im so excited to start this!
Amber Cordero hi wud u say this was safe at ur daughters party I wanna do this for my sons 12th bday party however he’s asthmatic n who knows about the other kids I’ll be getting face masks n goggles possibly but how did that turn out
It took me 6 hours to cook 3 colors (since I used a small oven). That would be like 3 packs of cornstarch. I also used powder dye (so, I still need to dilute it). The result of mine was, color is not that vibrant. If anyone else is using powdered dye and wanted it to make the color more visible, I suggest that you put a lot because the color fades when you heat/cook it in the oven.
No problem i'm glad it helps you out. I sort of invented the recipe as the only info I could find on how to make it was that is was made out of Cornflour =)
+Sebastian stenzl It depends on how bad your asthma is. I have asthma and it doesn't bother me at all! It's just cornstarch, water and food colouring...
in south america corn starch is so necessary for food recipes that you can find it everywhere, and really cheap. if someone from southamerica is reading, cornstarch = maizena
omg its just the same as the powder in color run i went there and i totally wannted do it for my birthday and i didn´t now how but then i whached this video and tryed it out i tought it was gonna be a big mess but achully it surprise me and it WORKED (btw sorry my spelling from iceland and i suck at english) i love you
have you tried putting food color corn starch in the blender and let go. seems the air flow would dry the powder as it refines it as well. if it works that would removes days off the process
I dont' think that would fully work due to the absorbent nature of corn strach. and if you put in a non-newtonian fluid into a bender I think it would break it due to its properties
I hope you don't mind but I shared your video on Facebook as there is a bunch of us planning to go to the Holi festival in London in June and I thought it might be fun if we all made our own powder to take. Thanks for uploading such an informative video.
Have a quick look at the video I mad with the powder and you'll see it actually takes quite a bit to get it to stick.... even after I got them to have a water fight to give it an even higher change of sticking. It will fall off very fast I would got for painting green and just use that. But ya it looks good in all colors it just depends how you make it and how colorful you make it. I'm glad you liked the video =)
I just have one question, let's say I didn't have 2 or 3 days, can we stick it in an oven as soon as we reach the stage where the corn starch is all mixed with the coloring?
Do you think i could adapt this and use washable crayola paint instead of food coloring? Im thinking of having a powder paint fight for my gender reveal party and i sont want the entire family being dyed pink or blue or having their pants stained.
Well with baby powder it will defiantly work if you just want white. However i don't think it has the right properties but I could be wrong... However baby powder is actually slightly toxic.... So I would not recommend using it. As for staining clothes, that's just the nature of the beast.... I don't think there is any way out there to make a colored powder that will not stain even if it's just a little.... I hope this helps and have fun if you go ahead with the powder idea for your school =)
Ah ok well if you use just plain flour you don't actually try it out in a bowl... When i was researching this i found out that if it's done with normal flour its dried in big long thin sausages of dough and i think it takes a few days to dry. It's like making play dough and letting that dry. That's why i went for the corn flour way =). Hope this helps you out..
If you do it with flour, you'll find that it's harder to dry up. But in all honesty i have not tried it myself. It's how the original powder is made in india. But they then roll the dough up into really long thin lines and let it try out like that... If you do try it with flour, I would say do a test batch. Would love to know the results =)
Well from the Non-Newtonian state to about 70% dry i would say about 24 hours to 48 hours if you add to much water. As for when your dehydrating it in the oven i would say 15-30min. Best way I found was to just get lots of batches going. =)
does this stain clothes at all or does it wash out? This was a really helpful video, I'm going to be using this powder for a photoshoot but I don't want to stain the models' clothes!
what do you mean by shoot the powder out ??? If you mean literally shooting the powder out, You can use a co2 canon or a modified paintball gun. If you mean shoot as is photography and video. It's pretty easy to pick up, but if you don't want it to blur in a photo i would use a fast lens and a flash with a very fast shutter to capture the moment. I hope that helps.....
For a class fundraiser next year we are throwing a color run, slightly different then a Color Run since it is trademarked. I was just wondering if the cornstarch you got is still the cheapest one you have found. And also an estimate of how many powders are needed per person.
For the Uk it defiantly is and if you email them and tell them the quantity they usually sort you out a little deal... If there was a company like hippy powder in the UK i would say us them but if you in the US you might find it cheaper or less time consuming to buy it form hippypowder... And I would say it's about 500g minimum per person... one bag that size is about 4 or 7 good throws depending on hand size... hope that helps would love to see the result =)
The Running Rocker I'm in the U.S and also how long before the powder expires. We were thinking of holding the fundraiser in the fall, but we want to premake like 1,000 batches in the summer.
Emily Gong I would think that this would have a shelf life about as long as the corn starch powder you are using would. As once you dry the ingredients and seal in air tight containers and keep stored away from water, you should be able to keep for many months or longer. all of the ingredients are edible and non toxic. and all have long shelf lives.
will it be visible when you throw it at a white shirt? we need it for color run and it would be really awesome if when you throw it at someone it will become visible.
hi the running rocker so how much does it yeld ? i am excide to do this an its is corn starch not flour? i see the cost on sites an how long does it last for when made at home ?
I just want to warn everyone you do want to use icing dye because liquid food coloring will get you a pretty pale wet result and I'm still in the drying phase but I imagine it'll be less than neon when it's done so keep that in mind.
Recent update: I added about 20 drops of food coloring per pound(a little less than 500g) and the color did not fade during the drying process the finished product is still not as bright as the powder made with the icing dye but it's still pretty colorful.
I'm not sure I understand your question but i'll give it my best shot... It's a flour called corn flour you would of heard that in the video and Dye wise any dye I just used Icing gel dye but that's just cus it was cheap and I got lots of it... But food dye apparently makes a blander looking powder... Hope that helps
1. Why not dry/bake first and then blend it, skipping the sieves, mortars, and all the mess. 2. Is the end result the same consistency as the beginning cornstarch? If so I wonder if simply adding powdered food coloring to cornstarch would work and be easier?
1. It would not dry fully as you need the surface area of the layed out powder to fully dry out.. 2. I would have no idea... I don't think it would be the same as the color is literally into the corn starch...
I would like to use this for a color discovery box in school... is it possible to mix 2 colors of powder? (so the children can mix red and yellow for example and they would get orange)
You don't have to use the foil it's only easier to get out out of the tray after your done... Oh and by the way DO NOT put foil into a microwave. Ya you can do it after it's dry but if you give it more surface area while it drys it will then dry faster. I hope that helps =)
So if no water is involved, is this completely non-toxic and non staining? Alternatively, is there a non staining version that won't dye clothes by any chance or is washable?
The Running Rocker Thanks, yeah I thought so, want to use some for a fashion shoot but since obviously the clothes are hired I can't get them dirty and unfortunately coloured smoke bombs are illegal in Australia as far as I know. :(
I really want to do this for my birthday, just want to ask if its safe as in what if it gets in people's eyes or if its inhaled? And is it safe if people are under the influence of alcohol? And is it difficult to clean up in a garden? :)
Well it's a natural as your going to get it... But Nothing is good to inhale so head up on that one and eyes and garden wise just lots of water will make it all go away =).. Hope that helps and have an awesome Birthday!
Yeah I like the way youve done it cause its easy to make and doesnt have weird chemicals in it. Its also dirt cheap! Ahh great this helped a lot! Ah thank you very much! :)
My daughter volunteered to make this powder for the camp of 64 4 year old. She was doing it wrong and I found your video. You saved our lives!!
TheNiacc I'm happy to hear =)
Here's a tip: Add your food colouring to the water first then you can skip an entire stage and I imagine you can use a blender in place of all the sieving stages. Happy Holi - just enough time to get ready for the weekend. Thanks for posting
great to know
Would adding a drink of the color you want work instead of food coloring
This video has just convinced me to go out and buy the stuff instead. Holy lord that's a lot of work!
It’s super cheap to buy too I’ll think I’m with ya, I’ll skip the mess and wait on UPS. Lol.
Im going to start making this tonight for my gender reveal party next week!! Thanks so much for a very useful and helpful tutorial, Im so excited to start this!
I'm glad it helped =)
we are doing a color party for my daughters 10th birthday. this has been the best how to video. thank you
I´m really happy it´s helped =)

thanks for the Info
add dye to the water and not afterwards.
Finally out of all the ones I've tried this one is by far the best! Thanks a ton
Oh My God,thank you so so so much.
We're have planned making a homemade Holi, and this tutorial was absolutely useful.
Laura Núñez I'm so glad to hear it =)
in south america corn starch is so necessary for food recipes that you can find it everywhere, and really cheap.
if someone from southamerica is reading, cornstarch = maizena
thanks for the info =)
The Running Rocker =)
it's also ma¨zena in Europe (I think) I live in Belgium and we use this in the kitchen a lot, and yes, it is cheap :-)
CDJWmusic in Canada its called Cornflour
Funny. In Switzerland we call it Maizena too. :)
Best video I've seen on how to make this stuff. Thanks!
I'm really glad it's helped you =)
omg its just the same as the powder in color run i went there and i totally wannted do it for my birthday and i didn´t now how but then i whached this video and tryed it out i tought it was gonna be a big mess but achully it surprise me and it WORKED (btw sorry my spelling from iceland and i suck at english) i love you
OMG IM GONNA DO THAT FOR MY BDAY TOO!!!
birnacool vevo I'm really glad it turned out well for you =)
Is it necessary to bake it in microwave ? Can we leave it for drying in the sun for 1 or 2 days Will it work?
I'm sure you can leave it to dry in the sun
thankyou very much
I'm making coffee filter hydrangeas. I'm using the powder to dry brush on the edges and centers to create shading. Many thanks!
Me: *looks at my blender*
My blender: Don't you dare.
I added color to the water BEFORE adding it to cornstarch - much easier and it saves time. : )
Thanks so much ur vid was vey helpful we are doing a color run if u don't get wet first will the powder stick? Also is the powder washable?
Finally a good tutorial. Thanks bro
have you tried putting food color corn starch in the blender and let go. seems the air flow would dry the powder as it refines it as well. if it works that would removes days off the process
I dont' think that would fully work due to the absorbent nature of corn strach. and if you put in a non-newtonian fluid into a bender I think it would break it due to its properties
Hi, :) do you think we can use it as an edible colour dust? I mean use it to paint over the fondant . Thank you :)
You can but in all honesty it's not that nice tasking... Tastes a bit like dirt...
caribre The Running Rocker could you not make it with icing sugar? I'm sure it has similar properties to cornstarch
Thanks for your answer :) but I want it to create shadows and shades over the fondant :) I just started doing it, I'll tell u later how was it ;)
OK great
hey great vid, just wanna know whats the best way to clean up this power... off paving, concrete etc?
From my experience just a lot of water seems to do the trick =)
Thank you. I was wondering if we could mix this powder with clay slip to enhance the color.
+Bryan Jagdeesh In all honesty I would have no idea...=/
would drying be faster in sun
Thanks for the how to video! we love holi powder too! Especially in super slow motion!!
Dude super awesome a little long process but cool and I like to experiment
I am definetely gonna try this
Thanks:)
I'm glad it helped... this is pretty much what they do in the factory for it as well
Awesome video!!!! Thanks for sharing... quick? Would I be able to do this with powdered tempera paint?
I would not advise it just cus I don't really know what powdered tempera paint is made up of and it could be toxic =/
can i use the microwave instead of the oven to dry the powder more?
and in what kind of bag you put the powder?
By the way great tutorial
Aaron Mata FAQ : Long Version : How to make Colored powder : Holi powder :
Is it necesary to take the powder into a masher or a mixer machine after it is dry? or only if you break it down and pass it through the strainer?
Unfortunately if you want a powder then yes...
Nice...Can i use this way to color paraffin? To make colored candles? Please advicte
Before drying the mixture just FYI it's called obleck and if you mix it slowly not fast it won't be rock solid like that.
Thank you so much for your very detailed tutorial. I will be trying this out this weekend.
I''m glad it helped and that you have fun having a go at it...
Great! My daughter is having a Splatoon themed party and I wanted something I knew wasn't going to make the kids sick. Thanks!
I hope you don't mind but I shared your video on Facebook as there is a bunch of us planning to go to the Holi festival in London in June and I thought it might be fun if we all made our own powder to take.
Thanks for uploading such an informative video.
Of course not go and share it everywhere =)
What exactly is the difference in the procedure or time needed when I use flour? Seems like the dough doesn't dry like as hard as you what you did.
Thank youuuuuuuuuu ! I'll do it tomorow ! Very pro !
I think you should add the coloring to the water before mixing it with the flour.
Ya i Wish i did do that as well but oh well =)
If I use food colorant, it would ruin my clothes? Or can I clean it successfully afterwards?
All of these powders are made out of food colouring.... I bought clothes just to do this with cus i'm not 100% on the results you will get
Have a quick look at the video I mad with the powder and you'll see it actually takes quite a bit to get it to stick.... even after I got them to have a water fight to give it an even higher change of sticking. It will fall off very fast I would got for painting green and just use that. But ya it looks good in all colors it just depends how you make it and how colorful you make it. I just have one question, let's say I didn't have 2 or 3 days, can we stick it in an oven as soon as we reach the stage where the corn starch is all mixed with the coloring?
Have you tried mixing the color paste in to the water before putting it in the cornstarch?
If so, did it turn out well?
Summer Owens I have no done it myself but I have had people tell me it dose work.but I cant guarantee it
Thank you :)
Thank you! tbh I might never do this but I would really like to go to a holi festival coz it looks SO FUN
This was really helpful with my photography GCSE. Thankyou.
Cameron Pickering would love to see the images
Great job ! But I dont have an oven at home or something like it. What could be an alternative tool ? Thanks :D
heyitsahllice 69 Your best bet it to try and dry it out in the sun
fantastic video . Is this safe for people who suffer from asthma?
After mixing and drying, can i put it in the blender already? No need to use mortar and pestle?
Yup you can skip the mortar and pestle
Do you think i could adapt this and use washable crayola paint instead of food coloring? Im thinking of having a powder paint fight for my gender reveal party and i sont want the entire family being dyed pink or blue or having their pants stained.
Is it possible to just let it air dry instead of drying it in the oven? Also, did this stain your countertops?

Best tutorial on how to make holiday
dilute the gel in water.. then combine with the cornstarch?
now that would just make sense xD
The Running Rocker sarah henson I tried with the gel already mixed in the water and it worked perfectly! Awesome tutorial btw!
Awesome!!! Thanks for testing it out for me =)
Thank you =)
For a class fundraiser next year we are throwing a color run, slightly different then a Color Run since it is trademarked. I was just wondering if the cornstarch you got is still the cheapest one you have found. And also an estimate of how many powders are needed per person.

After you've thrown it, does it take a long time to come off your skin?
can i mix them in water and use as wet colors?? do they dissolve properly?
They will dissolve properly but i'm not sure if it works properly as I have not tried it myself...
will it be visible when you throw it at a white shirt? we need it for color run and it would be really awesome if when you throw it at someone it will become visible.
can you skip the baking process? and can you also make it with regular food dye?
+AkoSiBorzkie there is a FAQ but only if you in a hot sunny place can you do it outside to dry it out and you can use any dye
Best tutorial ever!!!!!! Thanks
can you add the colorant in the water before pouring it inside the bowl?
In all honesty It sounds plausible to be but I have no idea, If you test it out and it works let me know =)
hi the running rocker so how much does it yeld ? i am excide to do this an its is corn starch not flour? i see the cost on sites an how long does it last for when made at home ?
This is great. But... can i use poster paint instead of the one you used?
Thanks, this will be great for my photos
I just want to warn everyone you do want to use icing dye because liquid food coloring will get you a pretty pale wet result and I'm still in the drying phase but I imagine it'll be less than neon when it's done so keep that in mind.
Thanks for the Info, I will soon be making an FAQ in the description for people. I'll make sure to add this...
Recent update: I added about 20 drops of food coloring per pound(a little less than 500g) and the color did not fade during the drying process the finished product is still not as bright as the powder made with the icing dye but it's still pretty colorful.
Lucas Hutchinson thanks for the info will make the FAQ some point soon
Is the process of mixing the food dye with the powder easier if you first dye the water then mix it with cornstarch?
what did you use it with powdered sugar or flour? and understand the dye is a dye in the gel so? :)
Is there a reason you don't add the color to the water before adding it to the starch? It seems that would be easier.
+Dave Michael th-cam.com/video/4XxJBtVc1-A/w-d-xo.html
Hi, Just wondering instead of letting the mixture dry out in the open air, can you put it in the oven first?
I don't think it would be the same as the color is literally into the corn starch...
hey im trying to do this for a photography project what is the best starch to use? great tutorial by the way :D
I would like to use this for a color discovery box in school... is it possible to mix 2 colors of powder? (so the children can mix red and yellow for example and they would get orange)
I'm not 100% sure... But when I mixed them all together.. they did go brown...
The Running Rocker hmmm... I'm gonna take the risk and just go for it :-p
Thanx for aswering so quickly!
Good luck!
Let me know what happens =)
The Running Rocker I will ;-)
Instead of waiting for it to dry naturally could you use an oven from the start and dry it out this way?
I did and the top is puffed this is normal?
Are you able to add the icing color gel to the corn starch before adding the water or when you add the water to help mix it easier?
No I have not but if it reacts the save as cornflour then i'm sure it would work just as well
Question. Can the mixing be done in a blender or mixer instead if by hand?
Also can you use a food dehydrator to help dry it faster?
What temperature was the oven? So excited to do this with my students in two weeks
50 degrees
thanks this is absolutely helpful and saved my life!
I really Glad it helped =)
Dude How You Make It Solid , Like in 6:37 in the Video
What You Do To Be Solid??
You just leave it to dry for a day or 2
can I do the shifting after the microwave proses? and why does it have to use aluminum foil?
You don't have to use the foil it's only easier to get out out of the tray after your done... Oh and by the way DO NOT put foil into a microwave. Ya you can do it after it's dry but if you give it more surface area while it drys it will then dry faster. I hope that helps =)
If I used baking flour, would it be the same?
Would it work putting the gel in the water then putting the water in the starch?
Hey x x x Yup it would i mention it in here th-cam.com/video/4XxJBtVc1-A/w-d-xo.html
The Running Rocker okay :)
Could you use holi powder as make-up aswell? Like for all different coloured body powders?
hmmm I don't really think it would work as its a bit of a hit and miss on how well it sticks to your skin...
How well does it stick to your skin?
Thats why I made my friends have a water fight before the power fight =)
Could I leave it for 5-6 hours then put it in the oven would it still work?
Could you use this in candles and soaps like a mica??
So if no water is involved, is this completely non-toxic and non staining? Alternatively, is there a non staining version that won't dye clothes by any chance or is washable?
No matter what you do if your looking for somthing colour full it will stain a little bit.... It depends on the fabric. But yes 100% non-toxic
The Running Rocker Thanks, yeah I thought so, want to use some for a fashion shoot but since obviously the clothes are hired I can't get them dirty and unfortunately coloured smoke bombs are illegal in Australia as far as I know. :(
Ah that's a pain =/
Hi, i just wanted to know if using wheaten cornflour would work the same?
From what I know of, I if you use any wheat based flour it will not work as well... FAQ : Long Version : How to make Colored powder : Holi powder :
How long did it take to dry enough to bake? I know it varies, but on average - a few minutes, sit overnight?
For me on average it took 1 night or 1 whole day
Quick question, could the cornstarch be replaced with a sericite mica to make colorants for resin jewelry? Great vid and can't wait to experiment!!
+Shauna Reaux wow I really have no idea to be honest....
+The Running Rocker Oh and thanks i'm glad the video helped
Why are you using water over vodka? Vodka evaporates fast and will take 1/4 of the drying time w/o baking it and loosing some of that gorgeous color?
Thanks for the tutorial - We're having a backyard Color Run in a few weeks!
awesome =)
i know i may sound stupid asking this.. but can the powder be washed off when it gets thrown onto shirts/ fabric?
THANKS
Can we just use ordinary flour? I realy need this for myphotoshoot theme
Nice stuff. After seeing the half sandwich / bread roll, I straight went the kitchen to eat mine :-)
If i use food colorant, it would ruin my clothes??? Or i can just clean them successefullt afterwards?
I'm not 100% sure that's why I bought some cheap white shirts to do the event in
Can you use regular food coloring to make it?
Thank you huge help. last year we used flour. And was really no fun at all.
