Paul McCartney was so young when he wrote this song. I don’t think the term emotional intelligence was around back then, but this song certainly qualifies. His empathy for the two main characters in the song is remarkable.

“Is that a cello?” muses Philly, as a big cello zooms toward him several times! ❤

Paul said in an interview, that the cello short chirps, throughout the song, he remembered from the movie Psycho shower scene and wanted something similar in this song.

Pedant's Corner: That was George Martin's thought. Paul asked for a string ensemble "playing a rhythm" with what he called "chord stabs", inspired by a passage from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and asked for the tone to be "biting". George Martin's interpretation of that idea was influenced in his own mind by the string writing from Psycho.

Every Beatles song is a unique sonic adventure. This one is a great example of that.

"Eleanor Rigby" was revolutionary in its time for using a string quartet in a pop song. Many critics considered it The Beatles top song for some years after, but tastes change with time and distance.

Philip, there are few if any reactors on the web who can match your ability to critically examine and communicate the gifts of the various elements of the greatest music of my lifetime. Bravo!!!

The shear variety and quality of The Beatles makes them stand alone on their musical planet, imagine hearing this in 65 amongst all the other songs of that time. Such a sad and beautiful story, using strings in a classical way I'm sure was a first for a pop song.

Probably the first of their tracks that hit me as being truly great.

GREATEST Beatles song (together Strawberry Fields, A Day in the Life, Yesterday and Hey Jude) and ever written!

Really love how you sort through sometimes difficult and challenging lyrics. You're doing a good job examining the lyrics to this song.

This is what I really like from the best reaction programs-watching this, and your take on the song has expanded my awareness and appreciation of this song over and above the understanding of it before I watched this program. This is why I find shows like this one so helpful in more fully understanding the music that I have heard many times, but never thought as deeply as this about.

This song and "Yesterday", which were both mega AM radio hits and unavoidable, forced our parents and the adult world in general to acknowledge the Beatles were indeed talented songwriters and worthy of the adulation we kids had been throwing at them

Should not have cut your natural organic reaction at the end. Honestly man, I don't mind seeing a long pause, facial expression, tears..or whatever the natural reaction is ....or WAS! Anyway, nice job.
