@Rare Name if it's such a great idea that's probably why you did it. Heating glass unevenly can cause it to shatter, however with the heat from the lighter for a short time it is not likely to cause a problem
I bought a chip repair at Safelight and it really didn't look any better when they were done. Iirc, it was a $140 repair. I expected WAY better from a name brand company for that much money.
Expert Glass repair man here, what you should do is instead, buy a can of monster energy drink. After that you simply pour over the windows and it will work great. Works 10/10. FYI I’m also an expert like the rest in the comment section and 100% correct.
This doesn't work. The resin they inject can fall out or the repair person can make it bigger. Therefore they aren't responsible for the new windshield
Careful with the heat you can shrink the intererir plastic, weaken the window and discolor the glass. You can get the same result with a little more resin and patience. I have repaired hundreds of chips and cracks, and though the lighter method does work, it comes with alot more risks.
First You don’t need fire. The chemical cures in UV light. Perhaps he is trying to tell us non UV heat help the adhesive to flow better when he applies pressure and or vacuum. Second. The kits from auto parts store like auto zone leave out a vital step and tool. A glass drill bit to terminate the end of each crack or end points of a star shaped rock chip. If cracks are not terminated they may get bigger. Still if done correctly 10 bucks and 45 minutes is better than replacing a windshield.
I don’t know if this video is real but you can repair cracks like these. I have a friend who has a business where he repairs windshield cracks, he was on the newspaper because no one believed it to be possible but it is. Also not all cracks can be repaired, it’s very situational. But it can be done
There as good as gone and the windscreen retains its strength because its laminated. You can repair a chip for around £30 a screen will cost you £2-300 minimum.
@@alexbowser9801 it was a joke, however on a side note you won't have bad brakes if you just take em off and drive 😂 that way they aren't bad they're just not there lmao
Yeah, that's quite comprehensible. Glass is technically a liquid that at normal temperatures appears as a solid. If you warm it up, it melts, so atomic structure reconfigure itself until fragmentations disappears. Then you just leave it cool down and the glass is basically brand new. But the problem is that normally it breaks, because yes, there's dilatation of volume of the substance, so to keep it in place you need to force the surrounding parts to stay in place by some kind of tools. The only problem is that you have to progressively warm up the glass from the external to the internal part that is broken. So the uniformity of the mechanical process will be equally distributed around instead of have unbalanced pushes to outside that can broke the rest of the glass. These kind of treatments are always quite hard to make, glass is a substance that performs excellently in some specific conditions, but as soon as you change pressure and temperatures it breaks apart like nothing.
Should just take it to Safelite Auto Glass, and let them split on it and say that they repaired it, and in the next couple of days u need a new windshield
I replace automotive glass and this is how I repair rock chips on a daily basis, the heat from the lighter expands the cracks allowing the resin to fully fill the cracks in most cases.
I was happy to learn that my insurance covers these 100%. We have a mini coverage available mandated by law. It's a cheap option when the cars value is less than full coverage would cost. It's a comprehensive policy minus owners fault collision.
Don’t think they are “no charge”. 18 months ago had the back windshield on my car replaced ad 2 months ago hade my front replace just got my 6 month renewal notice and premiums jumped from $1600 to $$2400 for my wife and I and 2 cars and a truck. They straight up told me that was the reason for the increase. Needless to say I didn’t renew with them!!!
@@jaimesandoval5774 GEICO before and Main Street now. For this same reason progressive wouldn’t even quote me. No accident, no tickets, just 2 windshields.
It just causes some expansion of the stuff between the glass, which has the same light bending properties of glass, so that the stuff fills in the cracks. It works well enough, but doesn’t fix the structural integrity, however that’s only really a problem if there’s another impact at or around the same spot, something on the other edge won’t really cause this one to do anything unless the other impact is enough to cause a total failure by itself.
I think it's actually because glass is just a supercooled liquid and not a solid so when you heat it up it turns to a normal liquid thus flowing into the cracks and fixing it
Eh, it’s all correct if you don’t use a lighter. The lighter can boil any water in the crack, causing steam and pressure. With that in mind, it is important to know pressure along a crack is the LAST thing you want. It can make your relatively annoying stone chip turn into a cop drooling reason to pull you over with a huge crack (or multiple) on your windshield.
This is a wildly inaccurate statement. There is no water trapped in the windshield, as it is cracked (and has had a hole drilled in it, at the crack, to allow resin to be injected). As there is no water trapped in the, windshield there's nowhere for steam or pressure to build up. The heat does a good job of allowing the resin to reach farther into the tips of the cracks, especially if you are not using a vacuum injector, and is certainly not going to damage a modern windshield. Please don't make comments like this unless you're an actual expert. Sincerely, A Veteran Luxury Automotive Technician
