I like to think of licks as a learning tool… a way to learn the language. But certainly not the end in of itself.
    I agree with you, J

My approach was always to get them under my fingers in all keys and then forget them, just let the vocabulary synthesize out of my playing more naturally.

Perfect! I think we’re saying the same thing. Although I wouldn’t say “never” use a lick. Especially when playing fast, having some patterns under your fingers can be important!

Hello Jeremy! I just bought your Piano Solo book here in Italy! I'm sure it's as filled with great advice and material as your TH-cam channel. Thank you so much for your work and inspiration!

That's so nice, Marco! Thank you! By the way, there's going to be an Italian translation coming out soon...probably sometime in February. Shoot me an email and I'll send you the free pdf. I'm trying to spread the word! 😉

Cantaloupe I think licks are like those Word a Day calendars. Only useful once you start working them into your existing vocabulary/playing.

I think that's a lovely way to put it! They're kind of fun, kind of helpful...but they don't constitute an education!

Jeremy, I know that I am very close to becoming annoying by repeating (in perhaps different form) the same question but could you please help me to understand why there is so little reference to Keith Jarrett’s style of playing and his “standards” in any literature and jazz lessons. I have sheet music and even a book with transcriptions of the pieces he played but this is all. The Real Book doesn’t even mention him. Are there any Keith Jarrett licks that I could learn, please? Thank you Jeremy. I would appreciate if you could help me (I do not want to ask this question during MUSA 134F).
My ambition, at this point, is just to understand the language. I may speak it the future but I will definitely never write any poetry.
    Thank you
Ps. For some reasons the sound volume of your recent videos is very low. I have to increase the gain to the maximum on my iPhone to hear anything.

I have just listened to Brief History of Jazz Piano. Thank you for explaining more about Keith Jarrett’s fusion of different styles of music. I had a problem hearing only jazz in his piano concerts. Keith Jarrett is definitely my favourite pianist.

Keith is one of my favorites too. I wish there were some "easy" explanation for what he's doing, but it almost encompasses the entire history of piano music from classical, jazz, rock, and avant garde.
