A thinking man's music. "It's summertime and the living is easy Fish are jumping and the cotton is high Your daddy's rich and your mama's good-looking Hush, little baby don't you cry Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry No no no no Don't cry, don't cry One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing You spread your wings and take to the sky But until that morning there is nothing can harm you With your daddy and mommy standing by They are standing by, I know, don't cry Summertime, summertime, summertime And the living is, living is easy Fish are, I know the fish are jumping And cotton is so high Your daddy is so, so rich and your mama good- She had to be good-looking So hush, little baby, don't you cry Don't you cry, no no, don't cry No need to cry, don't cry, don't cry Summertime, summertime"
Something I find a shame is that all renditions of "Summertime" NOBODY actually goes "Now listen to your daddy won't you. Before you start to-travellin' " after the last note of "Summertime" As "Summertime" and "A woman is a sometime thing" are actually one long song.
I`m there 1958/9.. London. England, listening to our newly purchased L.P. Porgy and Bess with my boyfriend,, lazing around, dreaming of life and love...those were the days............ah. ah.ah....mm mm mm.
Miles influences everybody around him, from, Gil Evans,Teo Macero, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock up to Marcus Miller..It is his genius that put the best talented minds together...
+My other house is a Ferarri Listen carefully around 2:35 to end. What would you say it is? Either Sousaphone or Tuba. Either way, I just love a piece of music that includes a Tuba or Sousaphone in the bass register, given it's often neglected in Jazz line ups, due to the double bass, and it's obvious versatility. The opening song, Buzzard Song, has the same brass instrument playing the cool outro lick with double bass also.
+My other house is a Ferarri It's a great feel to the sound. You got me thinking on who that would have been. After a bit of searching I found this name , Bill Barber. He was a tuba player and did record/appear on quite a few Miles Davis recordings, Porgy and Bess being one of them.
If i were to direct a movie, this would be the perfect background music for a scene. A tired man getting out of work on a foggy rainy night, walking down the streets of new york around 12 at night, wearing and all black suit with a long brown coat, smoking one of those cuban cigars when suddenly 3 old school gangsters pop out from an old dirty alley, and start beating him up while the rain is still pouring down on them, the man just laying down on the floor all beat up then the camera would go up but still looking at the man then turn into the city then boom end.
Allex Rebell This song does evoke images. Beautiful. I always thought it was a father talking with his frightened son...in the summer...in the south...maybe during a thunderstorm.
Linda Adams Thank you i am actually. For months now i've been trying to come out with some sort of movie from this song, my history teacher showed me this song, but thank you i appreciate it.
A deep sentimental, a kind of psy-musician who could really tell you, well, we're sorry but, you're really not the one we just need at hall, I'm sorry but go back dreaming, please ! Just get back to sleep ! Thanks !
How wonderful of you to feature Miles Davis. Today, May 26th 2016 is the 90th anniversary of his birth. Please check out my youtube channel honoring Miles Davis and other great African-American artists like Robert Johnson, “King of the Delta blues singers”; Ernest Hogan, “Father of ragtime”; James Brown, “Godfather of soul” and Patti LaBelle, "Godmother of Soul" - all born in the month of May.
A low flying Angel blowing a part of an universal message!
Words cannot adequately describe the depth of his genius on this classic creation....

A thinking man's music.
"It's summertime and the living is easy
Fish are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good-looking
Hush, little baby don't you cry
Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry
No no no no
Don't cry, don't cry
One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing
You spread your wings and take to the sky
But until that morning there is nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mommy standing by
They are standing by, I know, don't cry
Summertime, summertime, summertime
And the living is, living is easy
Fish are, I know the fish are jumping
And cotton is so high
Your daddy is so, so rich and your mama good-
She had to be good-looking
So hush, little baby, don't you cry
Don't you cry, no no, don't cry
No need to cry, don't cry, don't cry
Summertime, summertime"

One of the best Miles tunes with or without Gil Evans.
Gil Evans got the best out of Miles Davis. Albums like Miles Ahead,Porgy & Bess and Sketches Of Spain are all great recordings.
Miles influences everybody around him, from, Gil Evans,Teo Macero, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock up to Marcus Miller..It is his genius that put the best talented minds together...
yup this is good stuff.
the best
Miles sounds magical throughout this recording. The band is awesome especially those real low bass notes, I'm guessing it was a Sousaphone ?
+MrFireblade67 Might wanna fact check that one............
+My other house is a Ferarri Listen carefully around 2:35 to end. What would you say it is? Either Sousaphone or Tuba. MrFireblade67 Oh shit that does sound like a tuba. That's really cool I didn't notice that.

+MrFireblade67 That was the great Bill Barber on Tuba.
