I love how in the collectibles space we can talk about a year ago ie. “who remembers 2022” like its some bygone era of horse drawn carriages, speakeasys and swing music. It makes me long for the simpler times of yesteryear, like early July.

One of the reasons people bail is the lows after a frenzied peak. You get used to ridiculous turnover and price appreciation and a slow or even a normal market feels like the end of the hobby.

24:55 - 26:02 by far the best recap of the last 3 years how magic threw their monopol position.

  • @hosersupreme

A little context - The original Kamigawa block was generally terrible at the time in Standard, because it followed Mirrodin block, which saw a tremendous number of Standard bannings due to the high power level. The power level of WotC designed sets used to swing like a pendulum as they tried to compensate for terrible blocks or overpowered blocks on the regular. It kind of started when Richard Garfield insisted on Magic slowing down post-Legends, having been inspired by The Magic Goes Away by Larry Niven. We had 4 full sets of slow, underpowered Magic until Alliances and then the pendulum started to swing gently until Urza's block, when the swings started getting really wide.

@@TangleWireEnjoyer Yeah, that was kind of the point. Mirrodin block was so fast and brutal and Kamigawa block was slower and more balanced. At the time, it seemed weak/terrible by comparison, but 20 years later, it seems wonderful. I'm a fan and rather enjoyed Neon Dynasty as well.

Missed opportunities on the mind? I started playing MtG during Unlimited and totally didn't understand the game rules (long story short, i thought you could only drop a land OR play a card once a turn), so I thought Moxes were worthless - a more easily destructible land. So, back then creatures were king and I met older players who were way more savvy about the game, and I really wanted a Lord of the Pit more than anything.... so one of these older kids offered me a revised Lord of the Pit for a Mox Ruby and Mox Pearl I had and made me throw in a Cyclopian Tomb (another card i didnt understand). I jumped at the chance... decades later and I am still thinking about that trade. :(

What really is putting MtG into question from a financial stand point is the comparison with the alternatives. FaB and Sorcery seem to be on the rise. They are competing with MtG but the have tighter productlines, in many parts they are still cheaper (amazon dumps excuded) and they seem to be much more customeroriented. Pokemon from my perspective seems to be a much saver harbour, I will buy into this bad era. But honestly there are stocks and other options. Hope your having a good day!

They oversupplied the market and jacked up prices of the boxes drastically. There are going to be less fresh blood going forward due to demographics. It's not overprinting it is price descrimination strategy via customer segmentatio to maximize marginal sales over marginal costs. Its advanced economics. There are thousands who will buy magic at whatever price and won't wait for discounts. They shop through traditional lines and pay heavy premiums. There are thousands who won't buy mtg unless heavily discounted but they are willing to wait. WoTC has to sell direct to get these customers to get at thier marginal price point while maximizing WoTC internal profits but at the same time minimize the window of sales so at to exclude those customers who are will8ng to pay the premium.

Nothing against FAB and Im keen for sorcery... But no other TCG even comes close to the complexity/diversity that is MTG that is main stream. And that's why it's so well loved as a game.

The last sealed product I bought from WOTC was Commander Legends. 3 collectors packs. They were incredibly faded cards and crinkling straight out of the pack. I was shocked.

I got into buying new sealed product in 2022. I started with 1x Modern Masters 2022 Draft & Collectors. Got 1x Dominaria United Set & Collector. Grabbed a draft Unfinity box....
But then I lost my job. And I took a face beating on the boxes that I bought as I picked them up around their release rather than watching the markets and seeing if the boxes go cheaper.
And then Amazon dump. And then Cruel Summer of 2022. And then M30... ugh.
Without extra income I missed out on the really good sets that came out after these.
I've been tempted to crack open these boxes just to enjoy the cards... maybe crack something cool to sell.
But as Rudy mentioned, Worldwake booster box now is not the same price and feelings that were felt when it was a standard set.
This video encouraged me to continue to pretend that those boxes aren't sitting in my closet :)

    • @chim007azo
      @chim007azo ปีที่แล้ว

$1k isn’t about the value in the box. It’s about the ability to open the box. Things will continue to happen to sealed boxes. Some will be destroyed (fire, flooding, etc.) Some will get opened to sell or raffle off as packs (or loot boxed). Some will be opened by a streamer who will generate enough profit on the stream to pay for the box. Eventually someone or group rich enough will decide to open a box for a draft or chaos draft and the rarity of the box determines the price.
