Musical Myths - Talent and Success (A Vlog)

  • Hi folks! After a brief hiatus, I am back with a full length TH-cam vlog.
I wanted to talk about some misconceptions about independent musicians, and what it means to have success in music. We are all familiar with the household names of music, and have likely encountered a musician starting out, but there is a chasm of people in between these two places building musical careers for themselves.
Some common tropes such as being a 'struggling artist' or the part insult/part joke statement to 'not give up the day job' aren't helpful in this regard, and drive this idea that success is equal to the innate 'talent' that one has, and also that if you cannot succeed on a worldwide basis, you may feel like a failure, thanks to this oversimplification and the effect of social media comparisons.
As a result, I wanted to make a vlog to talk about the various ways that independent musicians build their careers, and how many people can find success without being a household name.
If you are a musician I would love to know your thoughts? What is your plan (or current strategy) for a career in music? Are you part-time of full-time? Do you believe that talented people are born, or does their 'talent' come from relentless graft? Do you have multiple revenue streams? Do you have any other thoughts? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for watching, lots of content to come!

Success USED TO mean what Major Record Labels SAID it was. A Grammy (or 6?), performing at iconic venues, a charting record... I believe I have already had success in the music biz. I have already checked off MANY things on my bucket list so in my brain, I've made it. Musicians ARE NOT talented AT ALL anymore...and the "artists" are laughing all the way to the bank!

Completely! Good that you’re making your way through your bucket list! It’s a difficult environment to look at previous measures of success, sounds like you’re smashing it 😊
